4 Tips to Boost Your Metabolism

The problem that a lot of us have with losing and maintaining our weight is a sluggish metabolism. Once I hit 40 my metabolism hit a wall. It’s even harder now to maintain and lose weight. Plus there’s all that other awesome stuff that appears when hit 40 (like high blood pressure for instance) So how do you combat all of that? You make just a few key changes to your lifestyle to boost your metabolism. This is my new plan. Number 2 is the easiest to implement by the way. There are even half a dozen apps to remind you to drink enough water each day.

1. Diet

This doesn’t mean going on a diet. It means changing your diet. Diets don’t work. In fact, diets will suppress rather than boost your metabolism. No, what we’re talking about is changing your diet to foods that will enhance your metabolic rate. Go for whole grains and fibrous vegetables, lean meats, and healthy fats. And go for a smattering of all of them at every meal. These are all power food for your body and your metabolism. They boost your metabolism because they require more energy for your body to digest and process them.

2. Water

Water, water, water. It can’t be stressed enough. If you want to boost your metabolism, start drinking water. A properly hydrated body burns calories and fat more efficiently than a body without proper hydration. Think about it for a second. Our bodies are over 70% water, so if we aren’t properly hydrated, none of our body’s processes work at full capacity. That includes your metabolism.

3. Exercise

I know. I know. As soon as you see the word you want to retreat, but exercise is key if you want to boost your metabolism. A good round of cardio 3 – 4 times a week is ideal. If you aren’t physically capable of rigorous exercise, even taking a walk is enough to wake up a sluggish metabolism.

4. Take Your Vitamins

Just like water, your body needs vitamins to function properly. Without the right amount of vitamins and minerals, your body can’t function at full capacity. While taking vitamins won’t directly boost your metabolism, it will allow your body to do its thing to the best of its ability, which will in turn allow you to feel better and move more.

It’s not as much of a climb as you think to boost your metabolism. In fact, it’s as easy as making 4 simple changes to your lifestyle to boost your metabolism and get healthier. A higher metabolism is great for weight loss as well as a general feeling of wellbeing, so follow these 4 tips to boost your metabolism and start feeling better.

These are fantastic tips! Love them! Metabolism is something I always have to work on, which makes for a difficult time to keep healthy. Once read that 8 glasses of water a day is actually based on a person’s height/weight, and that I should actually be aiming for 12! O.O It’s a ton of water for sure, but a goal I’m working on anyway, heh. <3

Great tips Paula! I really need to take these to heart all more seriously. I have no problem drinking water, but the other three….well, ya, I need to work on those, LOL.

I try very hard at the eating right part, some times ok mostly when hubby buys me goodies I will slip up and when I am out in a social setting it’s hard to resist eating the right way. I also need to exercise more.

These are all great tips. I am definitely taking advantage of this information. I’ve been taking my health back little by little.

Great article Paula! For my clients I don’t use the word diet because it scares them. They believe this means starve themselves. So I like to use the words meal plan and lifestyle. I plan my meals for portion size and healthy foods and because I need todo this for a long time and be able to maintain it, it is a lifestyle.

That’s good information to have. Thanks Rachel! I hope you are keeping well. I can see how the word diet intimidates people too.

I’m bad about taking my vitamins daily. I also need to work on drinking more water. I feel like I’ve needed so much caffeine lately because I’m overdoing it at work. But these are all great tips!

I think I am my own worst enemy when it comes to this! I don’t drink enough water and I choose foods that I think will wake me up.. Which are foods that probably won’t help with boosting a metabolism but quite the opposite.

Great tips! I most definitely need to boost my metabolism. I will try all of this and see what happens. I’m pretty sure its my diet that gets me!

Drinking enough water is and always has been my biggest challenge. I’m going to look for some apps to help with it though. Thanks for the suggestion!
