Disney on Ice: I am 6 Again #DisneyOnIceInsider

Parenting is a whirlwind amusement park ride some years. January commences with it’s blank slate of beautiful opportunities and it’s promise of zen like days stretching as far as the eye can see, and then February arrives faster and colder, and March and April skate by, and we all know the summer disappears in the blink of an eye. Suddenly you find yourself looking around you, surveying life and family on New Year’s Eve facing another year, and you wonder how did the kid’s feet grow by three entire sizes in the last few months? Life races past. Children are not little for long which is why it’s so important to seize the daily moments, connect and be present together once in awhile.

Every year from the time my baby, now 13, was the age of 2, we escaped together to the local entertainment venue that hosted Disney on ICE. We missed this only one year out of the last 11 years. It is a family tradition. This year my girls are 10 and 13 and sometimes I wonder how much longer they will permit family traditions to intrude on their social schedules. I wondered that while happily seated between my two great girlies last night. As you can see, my ten year old happily embraced Mickey Mouse again this year. But it was the 13 year old that surprised me most. We were maybe five minutes into the show watching intently together when she whispered to me: “It’s like I’m six again.” That struck me as exactly what Disney on Ice is all about. It’s a chance to feel six again, regardless of your age! It’s part of the reason we return every year, so we can relive that feeling. You’re never too old for Disney on Ice.

Cars on ICE started the show. Now, I have to say I wondered when I ventured out into the cold again this year what could possibly be new about a show that I have seen eleven years in a row? But, this year there was a lot that was fresh about the Disney on Ice Worlds of Fantasy show. First of all, I have never seen a Disney on Ice show with Cars. But on opening night Lightning McQueen was ready to race. I loved that new take on the classic show.

After Disney on Ice’s Cars segment, the skaters transitioned to The Little Mermaid, which was done a bit differently this year than it has been done in the past two years. This time Ursula was smaller. Remember that gigantic inflatable Ursula of two years ago? The costumes and the props for The Little Mermaid made me happy. The staging of an undersea adventure was really well done with several bright new costumes of fish and various sea  creatures. After Ariel and her Prince skated away, it was intermission time.

Tinkerbell was completely new and really wonderful! We adore Tinkerbell and are quite familiar with her here especially since my older daughter played her at Original Kids Theatre Company Peter Pan production last March break. Loved seeing all of her fairies skating our their stories. It’s always fun to sing along when you know all the words. Tinkerbell was visually gorgeous and there was a lot of aerial activity which was thrilling to watch.

After Tinkerbell was Toy Story 3 which surprised me because I find that version of Toy Story a bit scary for children. The staging was pretty tame though and the story was really comical in parts. The Barbie and Ken characters and ice dances were hysterical. The costumes, makeup and hair also were creative and added to the atmosphere of the show. I laughed a lot at the Barbie and Ken sequences and the music that captured their romance.
