Fertility Facts – Canadian Infertility Awareness Week

It’s almost time for Canadian Infertility Awareness Week. Why does that matter? Well, in Canada 1 in 6 people of reproductive age struggles with infertility. In the US the figure is 1 in 8. Canadian Infertility Awareness Week is a chance to remind people again why we advocate. It’s a chance to tell your stories too.

The World Health Organization (WHO) calls infertility a public health crisis and it’s time to recognize that we need awareness and advocacy to help address this issue.

All about Canadian Infertility Awareness Week

This coming week May 24 to 31st is 2014 Canadian Infertility Awareness Week. As you know, I often write about adoption and infertility and all matters of health here at Thrifty Momma’s Tips. Infertility impacts 1 in 6 Canadians directly. In fact 47 % of Canadians have been touched by infertility. That means everyone knows someone who struggled with infertility.

Barriers to proper health care for infertility are significant and knowledge about the topic is also lacking in many areas. This coming week, Canadian Infertility Awareness Week, I hope many take the time to learn a bit more about the topic, attend an event in your area to build awareness or tweet with us during the week. The hashtag will be #creatingfamilies and several bloggers will be sharing information this coming week as well.

Canadian Infertility Awareness Week occurs every year in May, near Mother’s Day. There are many events scheduled around the country. How will you mark the occasion?

Fertility Matters web site will contain several events and awareness opportunities this week. As well they are on Twitter. So take some time to learn, or share this important topic. Chances are this Canadian Infertility Awareness Week you might actually know someone or help someone by sharing a fact, or a story about infertility.
