Halloween Mantel Ideas

Mantel Before

This is the first year we have ever had a fireplace in our home. In our old house we had some lovely spaces, but no fireplace. I never thought I cared. Now in our new house we have a fireplace in the living room. It has a mantel and is a focal point for the eye as you enter the front door. So naturally I have been thinking about potential for decorating the mantel this coming holiday season. I started looking forward to decorating that mantel several months ago. Halloween has provided the ideal first opportunity to get creative with that. I got a few great Halloween Mantel ideas when shopping at Target during their recent Target Trick or Treat event in Toronto. Target has a huge seasonal section. Their Halloween decorations were spectacular.

As you can see, in the first picture, the mantel was bare. We have two old clocks – one given to us from Jim’s mom before she passed away and one that was given to us by my Mom one year for our anniversary. I left them on the mantel and decorated around them for Halloween. I picked up a few decorative miniature pumpkins and started there, trying to keep them asymmetrical. Then I found two of my Mom’s old dollar store decorations that she used to hand up at the retirement home. My Mom, some of you might remember, passed away about 18 months ago. She was a school teacher all her life and she loved to decorate. I took her old scarecrow and her old sign and set the sign near the middle and the scarecrow at the end. There is a cute candle my mom bought me one year too so I propped the little scarecrow in front of it slightly.

At Target I found the world’s most adorable Halloween banner. It was about $10, which is a steal. I like the burlap texture and the colours. It reads: Happy Halloween. Plus it folds up easily and is reusable. Score. Then I spied some adorable bronze leaf lights. I bought them immediately not even knowing what I would do with them because I thought they were so cute. Plus I have a weakness for bronze things. The lights are for indoor use, so they worked well here. I draped the banner so the words are legible and propped two tiny Lego vampires on the far right end near our anniversary clock. Then we hung and draped the bronze leaf lights.

I moved my old Ikea bronze lantern off the armoire and added it last minute. I was bored looking at it all on its own on top of the armoire. I think it works with the leaf lights. Anyways, I think it turned out pretty well. What do you think?

Do you have any Halloween decorations up?
