The Harmony of the Seas – Epic Fun Cruising

Updated with more details in April 2019 This year, we took a family cruise on the Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas. The biggest cruise ship on the water at the time. As most cruisers know the biggest is only the biggest for a season, if that. But we didn’t choose The Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas for its size. We bought in this time for the laundry list of amazing activities on board and the ports of call. Cruising with teens needs to be fun, which means you need to opt for a cruise ship with a lot of activity. The Harmony of the Seas is non stop epic fun. Recently it was named one of the 8 Most Popular Cruise Ships by Cruise Critic. Here’s why. An Amusement Park at Sea Harmony of the Seas is like an amusement park at sea. There’s everything you could want, or ask for, including activities and shows for all ages. From teens, to tots and seniors too, there’s something entertaining for all ages on the Harmony of the Seas. NON stop fun. If you plan it right you can have the time of your life on Harmony of the Seas. So start planning early. As soon as you book the cruise, go into your Royal Caribbean app ( Royal IQ ) and get scheduling. There are Broadway style shows that are very family friendly most nights of the week, but you can’t see them if you don’t get a time scheduled. Some fill up fast so don’t take your chances. Cruise Ship Entertainment When we took a family cruise with Royal Caribbean cruise line in January 2017 Grease was winding down. Wish I had realized that and booked the show in advance. We missed out on that one. But we did get to see several others, including a spectacular ice show. Skating Show That’s right, Harmony of the Seas even has a full sized skating rink on one level. The skating show was like watching Stars on Ice or any other extremely high level ice skating production. All of the entertainment is included, which shocked me. There’s also an incredible water show on this ship. Some shows are kind of late for kids, but not for teens, and in fact you are on holidays so you can stretch the bedtime a bit. Family Friendly Activities There’s a zipline on the top deck and you and your family can zip across the deck 18 floors below. That was a rush, even if I did almost chicken out. But I did it, and it was fast. Wish I had done that one a couple of times. The Carousel Merry Go Round on The Boardwalk is just a unique experience on a cruise ship. Meanwhile the rock wall is a challenge and a great way to spend an hour. In fact, you may want to do this daily. We signed up one of the first days so we could rock climb at our leisure. The shoes and harnesses are of course provided. This is one you need to work at for a bit if you don’t climb routinely. Flow-Rider sits on two sides of the zipline area and is not far from the mini golf too. That’s one heck of a fun activity to try at least once. You can do it standing as if you are surfing, or body boarding. Just ask. Sometimes one of the Flow-Riders is for body boards and the other is for surfing. Skilled instructors will help you surf the waves 200 feet above sea level. This climbing area outside Johnny Rocket’s was one of the first things the kids found after we checked in. Spend a few hours exploring and getting the lay of the land so to speak – board early. Don’t wait. I much prefer that to boarding during the big rush of cruisers later in the afternoon. We aimed for 11 a.m. or shortly after the itinerary indicated it was time to start boarding. That way we had a full day the first day on board Harmony of the Seas. You have to be completely dry to do the zip line. Also no bathing suits allowed. There are a few other rules. For instance you can’t have any loose clothing on either. From the moment we boarded to the minute we left (sad panda) we were busy in a good way. This is the kind of cruise we love, because every family can have a boatload of fun family activities day and night. The waterslides on the Harmony of the Seas are not the fastest ever, but they are fun. There is a racing pair of waterslides and a kid’s play area with smaller waterslides for the young ones. They call the waterslides The Perfect Storm trio. There’s Typhoon, Cyclone and Supercell, one is a fun bowl slide that spits you out at the bottom. We loved that one the most. MY Favourite Slide The Abyss drops 10 stories and you ride through it leaning back with feet inside a burlap sack. Don’t wait. Do this one early on and repeat. The slides are so much fun and they are not scary at all. Just good clean fun with a little hit of adrenaline. It’s 45.72 meters above sea level. Teen Club The teen club has numerous scheduled events and activities late into the night for youth. My daughter joined several kids who went ice skating the last night we were there. Typically the Harmony of the Seas teen program is open until 1 a.m. For more information on the kid’s club hours visit the Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas info centre. Cruising with Teens or Tweens is a Lot of Fun on the Harmony of the Seas We enjoy cruising with several cruise lines. Each cruise line and each cruise boat has distinctive merits and personality too. This most recent cruise on Harmony of the Seas was epic. If you are an active family that loves rock climbing, zip lining, theatrical shows and thrilling waterslides this is the cruise ship for you.

Where to Stay Near Bromley Mountain

Wondering where to stay near Bromley Mountain this season or next? Earlier this year I started hunting around for places to visit in Vermont during ski season. Eventually we found Bromley Mountain ski resort. But what you need to know about Vermont is that every single ski resort is unique. Some have built in accommodations on site. Others have accommodations nearby. And some have a mix. So what’s the story with Bromley Mountain? Well I am here to tell you everything I found out when we researched and then stayed at Bromley recently. If you plan a stay this season or next then you need to know everything you can about the accommodations near Bromley Mountain. A Bit About Bromley Bromley Mountain ski resort is located in Peru, Vermont, almost in between Manchester and Londonderry. It’s a smaller ski resort with beautiful terrain and excellent views all around. This month we had the chance to ski at Bromley Mountain Resort on a hosted ski trip. It was a fantastic few days and we timed it perfectly. The snow was with us and Bromley, in the southern area of Vermont near Peru, got hit with several huge snowfalls the week we visited. Luckily we made the drive easily through Ontario, New York and the southern tip of Vermont thanks to our new snow tires. Here’s a bit about our time at Bromley Mountain ski resort, Vermont’s Sun Mountain. And for our first ever stay at Bromley Mountain we opted to relax in Bromley Village Rentals. The Condominiums at Bromley Village are spacious, clean and inviting. These are the kinds of spaces I love to stay in when we take our annual ski trips. Nestled in the woods, in close proximity to the mountain, these condos are very family friendly. We settled in quickly and over the course of our time here we had one or two meals in the condo and celebrated my daughter’s 14th birthday here too. So, safe to say we felt at home. While you might have a bit of a challenge seeing Bromley Village rentals from the highway, you will get used to the entryway after a day or two in Vermont. The two stone pillars mark the drive into the neighbourhood and there’s a small office on the way to the individual units. The Bromley Village Rentals are my choice for best place to stay near Bromley Mountain ski resort. We loved having so much space to ourselves. The condos are decked out with everything you could possibly need to feel at home while skiing. The kitchen is full stocked. There’s a coffee maker and dishwasher and fridge, stove and microwave too. You can save money cooking the occasional meal for your family here. Decor inside has a natural Vermont Green feel with stone and wood and greens and browns throughout. We had a three bedroom, three bathroom condominium and it could have easily fit 6-7 people. One of the rooms on the lower level had two sets of bunkbeds that would sleep four in that room alone. The large property at Bromley Village Lodge Rentals features a clubhouse with fitness centre and a pool which is outdoors, so only open seasonally and not even visible beneath all the snow in March. There’s a fire pit and a nearby climber and play structure for kids too. The only thing missing was a hot tub. Bromley Mountain is one of the older mountains and the condo community is filled with condo owners alongside a select group of units that are for rent all year round. Highly recommend Bromley Village Lodge Rentals if you are looking at where to stay near Bromley Mountain in any season. The accommodations were great. Not so fussy that you worried about coming in after a day of skiing. Comfortable and inviting. Each rental unit featured a handy front storage space attached to put your boots and skis, or snowboards in overnight. The Lodge at Bromley For our final night we moved to The Lodge at Bromley (see photo above). After a day spent skiing for 6-7 hours I thought the 8 hour drive home would be way too much. So we stayed overnight for just one evening here. In fact, The Lodge at Bromley is much smaller and a dated kind of hotel space. But it still works. If I were coming to visit with a friend for 2 nights then I would give this serious thought. The room we had was convenient but too small for a family of four. There’s ski in and ski out access here in certain rooms. That’s kind of the novelty of staying here. The Lodge features a kid’s lounge with Wii and arcade games. And breakfast is also included, which is a basic kind of affair, with waffles, muffins, bagels, yogurt and eggs. Still it helps to save money. The view was awesome and the lobby was inviting too. Just the rooms are a bit run down. Other Options: Manchester is full of small hotels and bed and breakfast type spots. They are close enough to stay in and drive over to Bromley every day. Bromley Mountain has ample parking so no concerns if you want to do that. We drove into Manchester 3 nights in a row to scope out restaurants and shops. The hotels in Manchester come in a range of prices and sizes too. Book ahead, during peak seasons everything fills up fast. We were guests of Bromley and stayed at Bromley Village while in Peru, Vermont. We received accommodations, lift tickets, lessons and perks while visiting. My opinion is all my own and it is also truthful.

Yurt Life at Wasaga Pines – Comfortable Camping

Yurt life is a hit! Let me explain. To start you should know that I have always said I would never camp. Not a camper, I told my girls. We travel, cruise, stay in cottages, and love that life. But sleeping on the ground in a tent is not for me. But, that said, there are so many different ways to access camping or glamping now that you really need never sleep on the ground in a tent to get all the benefits of camping. This past week we had the chance to go stay in a yurt for several days at Wasaga Pines. Wasaga Beach is one of my family favourites in Ontario and Wasaga Pines, just outside the beach area, is owned by Parkbridge Resorts. So, I figured it had to be trustworthy and fun. After all we love Parkbridge Resorts. So, when I learned that Wasaga Pines had yurts available for family stays this year, I worked hard at finding a date to go visit. The last week of August, right after my younger daughter returned from two weeks of camp, we drove to Wasaga Beach. On the way there, we picked up my nephew Alex, who is the same age as Ainsley and was equally excited to try yurt life. Camping is an affordable easy summer family travel style that works for many. We love travel and we enjoy being outdoors. Here in Canada, nature’s beauty is on full display in summer and Fall too, and it’s so much fun to get out there and enjoy it. What isn’t fun for me is setting up a tent, and sleeping on the ground. Even sleeping inside a tent with a sleeping bag, you can still feel the rocks or the dampness of the ground. Yurt life is my ideal way to experience camping. We really loved our four nights in a yurt at Wasaga Pines Cottage & RV Resort. Yurt Life – The Perfect Camping Compromise Some hard core campers are all about sleeping in a tent on the ground. Others view camping as staying anywhere that’s outdoors like an RV or a cabin. These two camps have very different ideas about the outdoor experience. What we all loved about our Yurt at Wasage Pines Cottage & RV Resort is that it was the perfect compromise. Their yurts offer a rustic feel with the comforts that so many of us don’t want to give up – like beds and electricity! Their yurts are set up on platforms nestled in the woods, so you’re in the heart of nature while you stay a bit comfortable too. You still get to cook outdoors and gaze at the stars, but you can also enjoy sleeping on a bed and bring your laptop if you’re like me and work never stops. The bar fridge was useful for us too. Stocked it with fish and cooked it on the stove my sister-in-law lent us. Barbecues are available too for yurts. PIN FOR LATER – > Yurt Life at Wasaga Pines Cottage & RV Resort Gives You: Bunk Beds Futon Couch or Trundle Bed Dining Table and Chairs Electricity Picnic Table Fresh Water Available Nearby Comfort Station with Bathrooms, Hot Showers, and Heated Floors Nearby (honestly it was less than a five minute walk which mattered at 3 a.m.) Wasaga Pines is halfway between Wasaga Beach and Elmvale. It feels country like and yet you can drive anywhere you need to within ten minutes. We hit the beach twice while there. But you could also stay entirely on site and still have plenty to do. Before we left all three kids asked if we could return again next year. So I would definitely say that our first ever stay in a yurt was a great one thanks to Wasaga Pines and Parkbridge Resorts. There are many traditional camp sites at the RV resort and campground. And they have seasonal members too. Many of their kids were typically out and about and very friendly. The trio of teens I was traveling with easily made friends with several kids of various ages. Yurt Life is the Camping Life for Us! If you want to camp but still stay comfortable, yurt life is for you! The ability to get back to nature without all the discomfort is so great! If you’ve ever been camping in the classic way, you’ll really appreciate things like beds, electricity, and TOILET PAPER! We had a great time without feeling like we were cheating. The Yurt was comfortable and cozy too. I highly recommend giving the yurt life at Wasaga Pines Cottage & RV Resort a try. We were guests of Parkbridge and Wasaga Pines which means we stayed there and received accommodations in exchange for this honest post about the experience. My opinion is all my own and it is always truthful.

Road trips are great fun for the entire family. They offer the chance to bond by trapping our children with us on long car rides. There is no escape! Mwuahahahahahahaha. In addition to bonding and fun, road trips can be educational. Wait, wait. Don’t picture the kids groaning just yet, because an educational road trip doesn’t have to be a boring one! Educational Road Trips Don’t Have to be Boring Educational road trips don’t have to be an exercise in boredom. Your kids may think they hate learning, but chances are they just hate the boredom that can come with the standard approach to teaching that they get in school. Heck, even I, a grown woman, would run the opposite direction if you told me I were about to take a week long trip featuring the type of learning I grew up with. No, no, no. These educational trips are fun because they involve no books, no tests, and no boring droning. Rather, the kids are free to discover interesting facts and learn all sorts of stuff in environments that are suitably amazing enough to hold their interest. So without further ado, let’s take a look. Chicago Chicago is a fantastic city for educational road tripping. There’s really no shortage of things to see and do, and kids can learn everything from science, to natural history, to the history of one of the most notorious gangsters in the United States. On top of that, it’s not terribly far from the border, so it’s a definite option for many Canadians. Head to the Windy City and see the Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Science and Industry, their famous aquarium, and more. NYC Another city that’s an excellent destination for road tripping in the States. Head to New York City on one of your educational road trips and get a little culture in your life. See the Statue of Liberty, head over to Broadway and see a play or two. Visit the 9/11 Museum with your kids and of course don’t forget the Empire State Building. Learn all about one of the greatest cities in the United States. Quebec City Whether you live in the city, a suburb, or it’s a bit of a drive for your, Quebec City is on of the best educational road trips you can take in Canada. Head to the city and spend a few days exploring its beautiful scenery, geography, and architecture. It’s internationally known for its narrow cobble-stoned streets, buildings that date back to the early 1600’s, and is the only walled city in North America. All of Quebec is worth visiting in time and much of it is easy to access on a road trip. Toronto Another great place to add to your list of educational road trips is Toronto. One of Canada’s most distinctly modern cities, Toronto is home to the Royal Ontario Museum, the Ontario Science Center, various general educational and performance tours, and it’s not too far from Niagara Falls. We are only about 2 1/2 hours away from Toronto and love to visit. There’s always something to do in Toronto. Montreal From beautiful architecture to friendly people, festivals that are amazing and gorgeous outdoor public art, Montreal makes an excellent destination for educational road trips. Tour the city with the kids and take in the breathtaking scenery both in and around the city and immerse yourselves in the French-Canadian culture in a way you can’t do anywhere else. I love taking my kids to Montreal because it is easy to reach by train as well. Excitement Awaits on Educational Road Trips Educational road trips don’t have to be boring, and by no means should they be. Road trips are all about the destination AND the journey. So hop in the car, head towards your educational oasis, but along the way, play fun car games. Stop and eat at beautiful parks, or check your favourite travel app to figure out which restaurants are a MUST SEE. See the sights. Talk with the kids, and when you reach your destination, let the learning continue. Educational road trips are well worth it. Pack up the kids, hit the road, and enjoy any of these wonderful educational road trips. They’re all winners. Explore the Delicious Dumpling Trail in Richmond, BC

Did you know that dumplings are considered the original fast-food? Any idea what the differences are between dumplings? These are just a couple of the things you will learn on the self guided Dumpling Trail food tour in Richmond, BC. You can start every day hungry and finish feeling satisfied and well traveled when you embrace the authentic Asian cuisine and culture in Richmond. First Stops on Our Tour Inside an unassuming Korean restaurant hidden away off Westminster Highway in Richmond, BC, we begin our Dumpling Trail Tour. Kimchi comes first at Samsoonie Noodle and Rice. This is new, at least to me. It has more heat than I expected and I’m grateful for my tea and pitcher of water nearby. Dish after dish of dumplings, won tons, seafood pie, banchan, and more arrives. It’s a feast, and this is just the beginning of the culinary adventure. The dumplings at Samsoonie are Mandu, a Korean variation of traditional Chinese dumpling. These are often stuffed with minced meat and assorted vegetables. They can be steamed, boiled, deep fried or pan fried. The owner and staff at Samsoonie deliver outstanding service and it’s easy to see why this is also a popular spot for lunch. Samsoonie Such a great introduction to this foodie tour. Also the seafood pie at Samsoonie is legendary. SO RICH and fresh. It is a must try. Samsoonie’s seafood pie is a knockout dish. Many of the restaurants on the Dumpling Trail serve food made with ingredients fresh from local farms and that makes a dramatic impact on meal quality. And when you couple that with the fresh seafood that is available here, well you really do have the best of both worlds. Several of the restaurants on the tour also make and sell their own dumplings at the markets. About Richmond, BC In Richmond, a city of about 210,000 people there are roughly 400 Asian restaurants. Richmond is essentially a suburb of Vancouver, and it is about a 10 minute drive from Vancouver Airport. This city is much less expensive to visit and stay in. Restaurants and hotel stays here can be 30 % less than those in downtown Vancouver. Many Richmond Dumpling Trail restaurants are like Samsoonie, family owned, hidden gems with authentic flavours, both savoury and sweet. There is never a shortage of sauces to try, and new tastes and textures to sample. It truly is where the Far East meets the Canadian West Coast. Traveller Tip – Some restaurants on the Dumpling Trail only take cash so carry some with you. Su Hang Restaurant At Su Hang Restaurant you will find a unique soup dumpling called Xiao Long Bao. Soup dumplings, originated in the Jiangnan province, which encompasses the Shanghai municipality, so a lot of folks say that Xiao Long Baos are Shanghainese. They are curious to eat, but it’s worth asking for a quick lesson if you are not familiar. How to Eat Soup Dumplings Our host Lesley Chang, communications manager, with Tourism Richmond instructed us to eat them while they are hot, bite a small hole in the bottom corner of the dumpling wrapper and drink the soup before eating the rest. Although this spot is in a small strip mall it fills up fast. Better to make reservations so you won’t be disappointed. Oh and the deep fried yellow fish has a batter that’s lighter than air. With a peekaboo window inside the dining area, you can watch the dumpling maker create part of your meal and be transported to the far east for an hour or two. The night we were there the dining room accommodated a couple of large, enthusiastic families. In fact, Su Hang is a very social restaurant on the Dumpling Trail. History of the Trail The Dumpling Trail in Richmond, BC started in August of 2016 with 15 stops and it caught on like wildfire. There are many places to stay in downtown Richmond and if you are a foodie you will want to be central to the highlights of the trail. The Vancouver Airport Marriott Hotel or the Airport Sheraton are clean, affordable, and central to dozens of the restaurants featured on the trail. Empire Seafood Empire Seafood restaurant serves some of the most beautiful looking dim sum you will ever set eyes on. Located in the retail and business centre, this one is extremely affordable and busy all the time. This restaurant brings traditional dim sum and Cantonese food to Canada with a modern flare. Tip – Richmond is safe. You can walk to many of the dumpling trail stops. The Dumpling Trail highlight at Empire Seafood is SIU Mai and Har Gow. Har Gow are shrimp dumplings and these are a favourite of mine. I order them often in Ontario when I can find a restaurant that serves these. This Empire Seafood Dumpling Trail stop spoiled me though. The wrapper is light and almost translucent made of tapioca starch. The pleating and strength of the wrappers reveal a chef’s skills. Empire Seafood also had picture perfect pork buns. The view from Empire Seafood is a bonus. From inside the dining room, on a clear day you can see all the way down to the mountains. Siu Mai have a thin yellow wrapper and are stuffed with pork and sometimes topped with salmon roe. The Empire Seafood Barbecue pork buns are something everyone should experience at least once. Pepper Lunch From the extremely traditional modest Su Hang and Samsoonie to the large, open busting experience at Empire Seafood, we move to the contemporary atmosphere at Pepper Lunch. The Richmond Dumpling Trail is varied, fun and occasionally quirky. Richmond, BC is home to North America’s first ever Pepper Lunch. Pepper Lunch is a staple in Japan and has over 200 locations there, and with this menu it’s easy to see why it is so popular. DYK Richmond, BC is the home of North America’s first ever Pepper Lunch? Pepper Lunch features teppanyaki, so your meal is cooked on a sizzling iron plate at the table, and as it is delivered to you. But one of the best parts of this restaurant is the friendly owner Denis Sy. It is the second anniversary of the Richmond location. After one year they opened a second location in Vancouver and soon the third one will be opened, also in Richmond. “We are high end fast food. These are simple meals. We grind our pepper fresh every morning. It comes from Japan.” Pepper Lunch uses certified Angus Beef and no MSG is used in any of the dishes. Sy stops by our table to give us a rundown of what makes them distinct from others. Also a family run business, Pepper Lunch has sensible portions and strives for quality over quantity. A Different Take on Gyoza Gyoza served here are a spin-off of Chinese dumplings. The gyoza is said to have been introduced to Japan during World War 2, where the Japanese learned the art of dumpling making. Japanese gyoza are typically pan fried and stuffed full of pork. Here the gyoza are filled with chicken or beef. “We don’t use pork in gyoza because everyone has pork. We want to be different.” The Richmond Public Market Row after row of fresh seafood, fresh produce and some fun dumplings for kids greet us in the Richmond Public Market. There is of course merchandise, cell phone cases, electronic accessories and other novelties are for sale downstairs while bubble tea and food are for sale upstairs. In the food court there’s a spot called Xi’An Cuisine where their hand-pulled noodles are a huge draw. Their spicy wontons, served with a rich sauce, are on the trail too. Not spicy as in my mouth is on fire, but spicy as it refers to use of several spice combinations. Shanghai Station Tucked in another indoor mall that only locals know about, Shanghai Station is one of the newest additions to the food court at Empire Centre. Fresh ingredients and no additives used here to make some of the most creative and inspired dumplings. The owner of this restaurant has a chain of jewelry stores but started her restaurant as a labour of love and you can definitely tell when you bite into the food on her menu. Rose? Rose Lover’s Dumpling is brand new, and we were some of the first to sample these. They aren’t even on the dumpling tour yet. Shanghai Station is a real treasure. Ands Finally, Golden Sichuan Restaurant Our tour ended with the five alarm fire spicy Golden Sichuan Restaurant. Their Sichuan style spicy water-boiled dumplings are for those who love and can tolerate a lot of heat. In fact, most of the dishes we ate here had incredible spice and flavour profiles. Sichuan, or Szechuan food, emphasizes the use of chili, pepper and garlic, while ginger and fermented soybeans are also common along with prickly ash. As we sat there, a tour bus pulled up and dropped about 100 tourists off for a meal. Surprisingly despite the sudden onslaught of people the restaurant service was fast and smooth. Presentation of food is wickedly impressive here. My photos don’t do it justice. Get Instagram ready to go when you order. Phone eats first. You can find maps for the Dumpling Trail peppered all over Richmond. They are available at many hotels and also at each of the restaurants. Do The Dumpling Trail If you love Asian food and culture, this is the place to visit. Richmond, BC is accessible from the United States and from many provinces in Canada. Richmond sees many visitors from the West Coast of the US. It is a 2-3 hour flight from California. Final Tips You can start hungry but you certainly will not leave Richmond hungry if you do the Dumpling Trail. There are 20 plus stops on this tour. Bring cash as some of the spots only take cash. Also, take photos and bring decent walking shoes, plus get a map immediately before beginning the tour and don’t forget to engage the restaurant owners. They love to share their favourite dishes and the story of how they came to be which adds to the experience. Sugarbush Ski Resort is welcoming, affordable, and has an easy going charm that will win the heart of any ski family or powder hound. There are so many things to love about the state of Vermont and the Vermont Ski scene, and there are endless options for every skier. But it’s easy to see why Sugarbush is one of the most beloved spots to hit the slopes. Owned and operated by a small group of private investors, led by local residents, Win Smith and Adam Greshin, Sugarbush Ski Resort is focused on the pure joy of skiing for all ages. Sugarbush Ski Resort – Makes A Mark Located in the Mad River Valley in Warren, Vermont, Sugarbush is over 4,000 plus total acres of skiing heaven. This gorgeous, family-friendly resort has consistently shown that its one of the great places to tear up the powder in Vermont. In fact, it was named “Best Ski Town in the East” by Outside Magazine. Something for Every Level With 6 peaks, 2 mountain areas that are gloriously uncrowded, and acres of backcountry, plus cross country too, Sugarbush Ski Resort is a place that welcomes all types of skiers. Be Better Here The slogan BE BETTER HERE really sums it up for me. After two days of lessons with a veteran instructor named Pate, I am confident the entire family left Sugarbush better skiers than when we arrived. In fact, I don’t think you can ski at Sugarbush and NOT leave a little bit better. There are multiple excellent black diamonds and so many magnificent blues. There’s a great little terrain area for children learning and doing kid’s camps on site, (just behind the Schoolhouse) and there are 24 green trails too. The Slopes Of course for most, it’s all about the mountain slopes, and with 6 peaks, Sugarbush has them in abundance. We stuck to the blue trails, some greens and one or two black diamonds. Be warned, Vermont skiing is a whole other level in comparison to Ontario, Canada ski hills. Vermont has stunning picturesque trails and mountains that will take your breath away. Lincoln Peak has some great options. These peaks offer: 111 Trails: 24 easy green trails, 51 intermediate, and 36 expert 21 Glades 3 Terrain Parks 16 Lifts: including 3 double, 2 triple, and 5 hi-speed quad 578 Skiable Acres Although all 6 peaks are fantastic, two get the spotlight here – Lincoln Peak and Mt. Ellen. Lincoln Peak Lincoln Peak is classic New England skiing. The bulk of the resort’s terrain is on this slope, with an abundance of slopes and trails. After hitting the powder, visitors can relax at Clay Brook slopeside hotel in Lincoln Peak Village. They can also find everything they need at the general store and enjoy fine and low key dining and take advantage of children’s day ski-and-ride programs. This is where we spent most of our time when we visited this month. Exceptional and Challenging Ski Runs Lincoln Peak has exceptional runs and some challenging terrain for boarders and skiers. The Mad Bus can get you to and from Lincoln Peak, which is useful if you are staying on resort, but it’s too far to walk with ski and snowboarder gear. Mt. Ellen Dubbed the “Hidden Gem” of Sugarbush Ski Resort, Mt. Ellen, may have a casual feel, but it has some hardcore skiing. It boasts Vermont’s highest chairlift, a challenging terrain park, and picturesque woods and terrain. Family-Friendly Skiing at Sugarbush Ski Resort With its variety of slopes, children’s areas, fine and casual dining and lodging accommodations, and a friendly, laid back atmosphere that’s heavy on the powder, Sugarbush Ski Resort is one of the best places to hit the slopes in Vermont. Sugarbush opened in 1958 and it really is a must-see. If you’re planning a ski vacation, I encourage you to give Sugarbush Ski Resort a look here. The Layout At first I was honestly a bit surprised at the layout of the resort. It is quite spread out and calm. Almost zen. You won’t find any boutique shops full of overpriced clothing and souvenirs. There is no European style base village where shopping is almost as big a draw as skiing and snowboarding. That’s unique for ski resorts these days. Growth Sugarbush is committed to sustainable growth. They grow strategically and slowly. The mountains are the star of the show. And Sugarbush shares the love with the surrounding businesses. Food is farm to table and there are dozens of world class restaurants in Warren and Waitsfield and Mad River Valley. There are many unique shops and covered bridges in the vicinity. If you have a day, take it to go browse and shoot some photos. My Recommendations for Dinner: As for food I highly recommend American Flatbread and Mint. Total opposites, but so worth it. Mint has a fresh take on vegetarian food that knocked my socks off. American Flatbread is flatbread pizza elevated. Back to the Buildings Also you will notice that all of the buildings at the base of Lincoln Peak and nearby are built in similar style. The atmosphere of the resort is comfortable and unassuming. Essentially this is not a pretentious space. The buildings flow naturally into the environment and even the newest condominium areas are not massive or jarring. There’s something lovely and very Vermont about the entire area. There are dozens of places to stay in the vicinity. You can opt for ski in and ski out or hang back at Sugarbush Inn which is less than a five minute drive from Lincoln Peak. Traveler Tip: We drove to Sugarbush Resort in Vermont with all season tires. Don’t do that. Get the heavy duty tires on your car now. A Few Ways to Save Some Money at Sugarbush Ski Resort: You can save money by getting your tickets early. If you want to ski in early December or early April you can save money on early and late season tickets also. You might do the three, four or five day flex passes if you are staying for several days in a row. Pack lunches if you want to save money on food. You can save money mid-week too if you ski Mt. There are occasionally flights from Porter Airlines that will line up out of Toronto to Burlington Airport. From Montreal, the drive to Vermont is simple and a mere 1-2 hours tops can get you your pick of Vermont ski resorts. We drove this time and it took us 9 1/2 hours via Buffalo from London, Ontario. Porter Airlines schedules were not flexible this year unfortunately. The drive is pretty straightforward. In the US? If you live in the US this is a sweet and easy drive from many areas of New York, Boston, and east coast (unless it’s a snowstorm.) My family recently visited Sugarbush Resort as media guests so that I could write about the experience here. We enjoyed four amazing days of skiing, staying, exploring and dining in the area. We are sharing several of our experiences here. My opinion is all my own and it is truthful.

Long Flights – Staying Healthy on Extended Flights #travel

Long flights can be intimidating. For some people, they’re annoying. Still others just adjust the seat back and sleep or take the time to read. Whatever long flights mean to you personally, there’s one thing that they mean to everyone. Possible health concerns. A lot of people don’t think of this, but sitting for such a long period of time can open you up to all kinds of health issues ranging from uncomfortable to deadly. How to Mitigate the Health Effects of Long Flights There are a few things you can do to help stay healthy on extended plane trips. I recently took a flight to Zambia, and it was the longest flight I’ve ever taken so I researched before I left. And I learned a few things along the way on the 15 hour flight, two hour van ride and two hours to New York to meet up with my companions. By doing a few simple things, you can make sure you stay healthy and comfortable on those extra long plane trips that we sometimes have to take. Walk Around Moving is crucial to staying healthy on these types of flights. Get up and walk around. The change in pressure coupled with the extended seated time can cause blood clots to form. These can be deadly if they break off and enter the lungs. So get up and walk around every hour. Keeping the blood moving is key to preventing clots. And invest in a good pair of compression stockings. I scoffed at these until the flight to Zambia and ended up buying a pair at the airport just before boarding. They were like a small massage for my legs most of the way there. Best investment yet. Compression stockings are made with tighter elastic which creates a gently pressure from your ankles up and lowers the potential for edema, or deep vein thrombosis. Chew Gum While the whole ear popping thing isn’t dangerous, it certainly hurts! Chewing gum can help keep the ear popping to a minimum, which means minimum pain. In addition to that, the constant chewing can help you release stress if you’re a nervous flyer. Keep mints, or cough candies or something to suck on if your throat gets dry and you need to stifle a cough. Plenty of Liquids It’s so important to stay hydrated. This is true of flying and life in general. Staying hydrated helps every aspect of our health, and it can be especially helpful on long flights. That’s because staying hydrated can help keep your mood steady, your body in tip top shape, and more importantly promote a body that is less prone to clots. A hydrated body is a healthier body. Flights and airports are excruciatingly drying to your system. You need the extra water so ask for it and drink up. Keep the Stress Low If you’re a stressed out flyer, long flights are not going to be your bag. Heck, even some seasoned flyers hate extended flights. That being said, you have to do everything you can to keep your stress level low. High stress can lead to increase blood pressure, which you don’t need on top of the drastic pressure changes of flight and the possibility of clots. Be sure to bring along your favorite music, book, or the like. You need something to distract yourself from the flight, or at least keep your thoughts on the flight to a minimum. Watch a movie, relax with a good book. Bring your KOBO or your Kindle and make some time for sleep as well. No use being completely exhausted when you get to your destination. Talk to Your Doctor If you have ANY sort of medical condition, talk with your doctor before going on an extended flight. This is especially important if you are already prone to blood clotting. When it comes to long flights and your health, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Long Flights – Doing Your Best to Be Healthy Long flights can be stressful. They can even be dangerous. These tips can help you have less stress and less chance of medical complications during a long flight. However, always check with your physician before taking any long flights. It’s essentially a floating resort, and with exotic ports of call, great entertainment options, and all-inclusive everything. Cruises are a wonderful way to combine relaxation, adventure, and romance all into one trip. You can lounge in the sun, sipping cocktails by the pool while on the ship, and then explore beautiful, exotic locales when you dock. It’s an almost perfect trip. A Safari I recently had the chance to visit Zambia with the UN Foundation’s Shot@Life global vaccine advocacy group on a fellowship. While we worked hard all day visiting clinics and US aid organizations and hospitals too, we also built in some amazing adventures after we finished the daily interviews and visits. At night we took a scenic sunset cruise down the Zambezi River and we also did a safari. As we were visiting and doing these things I noted many seniors visiting as a retirement adventure and I felt it a bit of a shame people wait so long to see Africa. This is a trip that people should embrace at any stage of life. It’s a very romantic setting. I would recommend doing this once in a lifetime African safari and tour as a romantic anniversary trip. 17 Things to Do in Marvellous Martin County

My favourite thing about traveling is embarking on new adventures and discovering destinations I might never see otherwise. Marvellous Martin County provided the perfect opportunity to explore this area of Florida that was new to me. I learn something new every time I visit a new city or island and that keeps me young. Last month I had all sorts of new experiences in marvellous Martin County, Florida. How to Get To Martin County Martin County is easy to reach from Palm Beach International Airport, Fort Lauderdale Airport or Orlando International Airport. It is a straightforward 2 hour drive from Orlando International Airport. It is about 95 minutes from the Fort Lauderdale Airport and 3 hours from Tampa. The Ecosystem This county is known for its bio-diverse ecosystem with 22 miles of coastline and many family friendly activities for all to enjoy. From quaint downtown Stuart, to Hobe Sound Beach, and Jensen Beach, there are numerous beautiful beaches and parks and one of a kind museums. All of that makes for a memorable vacation in Martin County. Here are 17 Things to Do in Marvellous Martin County, Florida: See Stuart No, it’s not a person. Stuart is the first town in Florida to be awarded Coastal Living’s Happiest Seaside Town in America Award. It’s quaint and clean and really lovely to explore. The shops and restaurants in Stuart are worth seeing. There are free musical events and you can stroll the Riverwalk pretty much any time. I wished I had more time to visit. I spent one morning browsing and taking pictures here. Cute and Walkable Stuart is a treasure and a picturesque spot for any tourist to visit. No skyscrapers here, just unobstructed views of the coast and tiny lizards scampering along the riverwalk. Take the Solar-Powered Trolley Ride in Stuart Sometimes even though a city is walkable you can cover more ground by transportation and see the area like a tourist. That’s just a fun way to do things occasionally. The trolley is the best way to get around and a fun FREE ride that runs daily by the way. I decided to hop on. It was a quiet day and the trolley driver gave me the grand tour with commentary as we drove around. He pointed out all the hot spots I should see. What an asset he is! About the Drivers In fact I learned all of the trolley drivers are trained by the Stuart Heritage Museum. Passenger pickup at Sailfish Circle, Kiwanis, Flagler and Osceola Parks. In fact people who work in that area will drop their car off and park in the morning and take the solar powered (yes that’s right and frankly I loved that feature) trolley to work and back to the lot when they are done. Here city hall is right on the water and there are Sunday markets too. Stuart Heritage Museum I barely had a moment to stop and take a photo. My itinerary was jam-packed. Admission is free. Uncover a few facts about Martin County’s history here. Do the Sea Turtle Nesting Walk Here’s what to expect if you do the Hobe Sound Sea Turtle Nesting Walk. (Take Bug Spray) Extremely educational. This is a must do for anyone over the age of five. This was one of my favourite experiences in Martin County and it was miraculous really to watch huge sea turtles dig an egg chamber and release over 100 eggs into the sand before covering them over and disappearing back into the sea. AMAZING. Take a surfing lesson or attend surfing school. I wrote more about that here – That Time I Attended Ohana Surfing School Summer Camp. What a marvellous experience and a formidable physical challenge. Take a week one summer and schedule your kids into surfing camp while you rent a condo in the area or stay at the Hutchinson Island Marriott. Such a great opportunity for any child. So unique too. Visit The Elliott Museum Foucault’s Pendulum greets you in the lobby. So hypnotic and dramatic! This is a gorgeous museum with an antique automobile collection that is astounding. It alone will knock your socks off. When I was there there was also a cool collection of American Baseball cards and a surfing display that was a bit eclectic but fun and a great insight into the culture of Martin County too. If you are an automobile collector or car aficionado you need to visit. Car Crazy? Don’t Miss This.. I am not car crazy at all but I was amazed at the setup and the exhibit, all right there in Martin County. Imagine one of those high end parking structures that is automated you’ve seen on James Bond movies and maybe in Fast and Furious as well. That’s the kind of amazing see through structure these one of a kind autos are kept in. Press a button and the one you are interested in seeing will appear before you in real life. Kids under 6 are free. UNBELIEVABLE! Visit The Florida Oceanographic Centre The Florida Oceanographic Centre is a 57 acre nature centre located on Hutchinson Island in Stuart, between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean. Excellent for families and not expensive either. There are a few rescued sea turtles here that you will want to learn more about I am sure. Zak Jud, PHD, shown above, is the director of education and exhibits, and is extremely informed. He often runs educational sessions for school groups and is also often skyped into classrooms when they are learning about a particular ocean unit. Florida Oceanographic Institute is a state and nationally recognized environmental organization offering educational programs to people of all ages. You will leave knowing more about the ocean environment. You will also be able to better protect that environment as a result. Feed the Stingrays at Florida Oceanographic Centre You can do this daily at a certain time. Check with the Florida Oceanographic Institute which offers Feeding the Stingrays sessions. They will tell you how to do this safely for all involved. Paddle Boarding Go paddle boarding at any of the amazing beaches here. I recommend Stuart Beach. Stuart Beach is one of the prettiest and cleanest beaches I have ever been to. Sailfish Splash I ran out of time to visit Sailfish Splash, but wish that I could have done so. Sailfish Splash is a waterpark in Martin County. If you have kids they will love it here. Visit The Children’s Museum of The Treasure Coast in Jensen Beach. Also very affordable. By the way The Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast, The Florida Oceanographic Centre and the Elliott Museum have a discount arrangement so if you buy admission to one of the three save your receipt and you could get a discount at one of the other participating attractions if you attend within thirty days of the original visit. Visit the House of Refuge. What’s a House of Refuge, you ask? Well, a house of refuge used to be a place for shipwrecked sailors and travellers to stay when they were shipwrecked. The House of Refuge located at 301 MacArthur BLVD, Stuart, Florida, is the last of nearly a dozen shipwreck life-saving stations on Florida’s Atlantic Coast. Built in 1876 to help stranded sailors. Take your camera and spy some of the various species of birds and wildlife living here. The Nature Centre alone features 20 different species including snakes and crocodiles. There are two trails in the refuge. One opens up to the Indian River Lagoon where you can go kayaking or simply relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. Go Fishing There are some great spots to catch fish in Martin County. Stuart is known as the sailfish capital of the world and there’s also an annual lion fish Jupiter Island Beach Take a drive through the area where ex president’s families have property, as do celebrities and sports personalities. It’s a picturesque area to drive through and the beach is public. There’s a beautiful entry way lined with Banyan Trees that makes this spot feel very southern indeed. Stay at the Hutchinson Island Marriott Beach Resort and Marina. Amazing service here and such a gorgeous location. There’s a marina attached and beach access and it’s walking distance to Stuart Beach, The Florida Oceanographic Centre and the Elliott Museum. GREAT location, Great Food, Family Friendly. LOVED it here. Port Salerno Go for the seafood and take photos too. We stopped here only long enough to have dinner one night but the pictures I got were some of my favourites. Port Salerno is a small community that was once the hub for the south Florida fishing industry. Now it’s a working waterfront. There are many local restaurants and markets nearby. Enjoy the Unique Activities in Martin County There are so many more things to do in Martin County. These are some of the things I enjoyed most while visiting. 12 Things To Do in Indian River County

Indian River County is a gorgeous, lesser known, area of Florida boasting many fun and family friendly activities. Until recently I had never visited this area of central eastern Florida, which is located about one hour south of Palm Beach International Airport. But this month I had the chance to tour Vero Beach, Sebastian and Fellsmere area to do some exploring and I wanted to share some of the many reasons your family should visit. The Indian River County area is one of the most biodiverse environments in all of North America. That means there’s no shortage of great outdoor learning experiences for the entire family. So What is There to Do in Indian River County? This morning was magical. Go Dolphin Spotting – The Indian River Lagoon and estuary in this county is one of the most biodiverse environments in North America. That means there’s no shortage of species to be spotted. Both dolphins and manatees can be seen, as well as turtles of course. 2. Visit the Vero Beach Art Museum – Here you will find stunning exhibits and beautiful grounds too. 3. Go Paddle-boarding: I have always wanted to paddle board but haven’t had the chance to do so…at least until Vero Beach. Paddles By The Sea is near the Riverfront Cafe just across from the Vero Beach Art Museum and I can honestly say I loved trying this sport. If you are 6 and older you can do this. While paddle boarding is a lot of fun, it does test your core and your balance. If you want to book ahead you could choose this: Orlando Paddle Boarding tour option from Viator which also goes on Indian River too. 4. Go Kayaking: Also Paddles by the Sea, on Indian River. So amazing. You won’t want to miss this. This was one of my favourite experiences while staying in the area. Here’s another great option for ethical Indian River Dolphin and Manatee kayaking tours. This area is amazing for these tours. 5. Do A Sea Turtle Nesting Walk: There are many options in the area. Google the topic before you visit and set one up immediately, because they are extremely popular and also very educational. The sea turtle nesting walk in Martin County or Indian River County, Florida is something everyone should experience. These tours are also available near Vero Beach. These often occur only 2 or 3 nights a week so be sure to check what nights they run before you visit and you can schedule accordingly. 6. Take a River Cruise: Jungle River Cruise leaves from Captain Hiram’s Resort. Relax, shoot some pictures and spot the wildlife on the river. 7. Ride an Airboat – I used to think (I am Canadian, remember?) that these were only found in the Everglades area of south Florida. In the Everglades last year I did an airboat tour which was a hoot. Since then I have realized these outdoor swamp tours can be found many places. While visiting Indian River County I didn’t have time to do an airboat tour, but if you are in the area and googling what is there to do in Indian River County, you might consider booking an airboat tour of Blue Cypress Recreation area. Here are a couple of options: Gator Bait Airboat Adventures: http://gatorbaitairboatadventures.com and Marsh Beast . These are quite an adventure and entertaining for sure! 8. Visit Treasure Island Museum – Learn the reason why this area is called the Treasure Coast. McLarty Treasure Museum is on Sebastian Inlet and it is very affordable, educational too. 9. Pelican Island Nature Reserve – Go birdwatching or just hike the trails for hours on a nice day. On Sebastian Inlet and the A1A. 10. McKee Botanical Garden – Located in Vero Beach. Such a lovely spot. Visit this McKee site for more details. This is an 18 acre subtropical hammock off US Highway 1. 11. Go Fishing – Sebastian and Indian River County make for some of the best fishing in this area of Florida. Whether you are learning, or a diehard angler, this is one of the best reasons to visit. The fish are jumping all the time. 12. Visit the Environmental Learning Centre: The Environmental Learning Centre is located on Wabasso Island. This is such a gorgeous space and it is wheelchair accessible. Actually there are so many spaces in Vero Beach that are accessible. There are day camps and corporate retreats and a gift shop here too. Bring your yoga mat to the screened in area and practice in this serene space. Indian River County has much to offer for Families: In fact, Indian River County is a diverse destination on the Treasure Coast of Florida. From paddle boating to eco tourism and fun interactive experiences with nature, families will find something that appeals to every age here.
