You know by now that I love word games. Paper, printable, digital or apps: it’s all the same to me. And Canada Day is one of my favourite summer events, kicking off the summer season for many of us. So, combine Canada Day word games into a bundle or a packet and that is a recipe to share! Canada Day History Initially known as “Dominion Day,” Canada Day became Canada Day on October 27, 1982. The change reflected a growing sense of a distinct Canadian identity, separate from its colonial ties. Canada adopted the iconic maple leaf flag in 1965. Seventeen years later, the patriation of the Canadian Constitution took place (1982.) This event transferred the country’s highest law from British to Canadian authority. A Day of Festivities Across the country, Canada Day is a vibrant public holiday featuring a wide array of celebrations. Communities large and small host parades, concerts, festivals, and family-friendly activities. Barbecues and picnics are a common tradition, bringing together friends and families to enjoy the summer weather. Over the years we have caught numerous spectacular fireworks displays, a hallmark of the national celebration. Don’t miss my Canada Day Maze printable, a popular download here. Where to Go Most major city parks have a fireworks celebration. In London, Ontario, Canada Day often coincides with Sunfest, a multicultural celebration at Victoria Park downtown. In Ottawa, Parliament Hill in the nation’s capital holds thew official ceremony annually and it is well worth the trip. The event typically features musical performances by Canadian artists, speeches from dignitaries, and a ceremonial flag-raising. No matter where you live in the country, if you want a celebration, you can probably find one, but Ottawa’s celebrations are a highlight. I mean, if there’s one thing the nation’s capital does well, it is throwing a party. Culture, History and Reconciliation Of course, I’d be negligent if I didn’t note that Canada Day celebrations need to be tempered with this reality. We live on land stolen from people that were here before we were. Here are Some Ways to Educate Yourself Re: Reconciliation and How We Can Do Better Make time to read about the true history of the country. Attend a traditional pow wow and amplify indigenous voices. Read the 94 recommendations out of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Make your own commitment to doing better and acknowledging the painful truth about Canada’s history. Read books by indigenous peoples and learn. Interesting Facts About Canada’s National Day: Remember to check out my Free Printable Pinterest Board where I have some other popular word games. How to Use these Games: To Print these word games out this month, you can right click on any of the images above and save and print off of your computer. Please do not reprint on your own site without attribution. Or download the entire lot of word games here: The answer key is included at the end of the word games package so use that if you are stuck. No matter how you celebrate, I wish you a happy Canada Day!

Happy Canada Day from my family to yours! This is one of my favourite Canada Day photos from years gone by. We love Canada Day here because, of course we are Canadian, and also my older daughter has a birthday the day right after Canada Day. So it is always a Happy Canada Day here! Wishing You the Happiest of Canada Days! Happy Canada Day and where did June go? June is such a crazy chaotic and fast month. To be truthful, it is not my favourite. While I genuinely adore the warmer weather, I do find that MANY kids don’t do well with the less structured days that June brings with the flip of the calendar pages. I mean June is field trips, class outings, warm weather but sometimes that change is so slow, as it has been this year. Way too much rain so far in my opinion. So Where Does That Leave Us? Well, I have written previously about my volatile relationship with June. But, July is entirely different from June. It is relaxed and happy long days spent at the beach or stretched out by the pool. July sometimes is all about attending local produce markets and summer sidewalk sales and just going with the flow. This photo above was taken on a Canada Day a few years ago when both of my little beans here were heading out to summer day camp at Original Kids. Flash forward and this year my oldest will be sharing Canada Day with a group of little people at a local city run day camp. She is working as a playground supervisor this year. My Happy Canada Day Resources for You! I have, over the last few years, collected and shared many Canada Day printables and word games. So here’s a bit of a recap for you. DON’T Miss my Canada Day Word Search or MY Canada Day Matching Game and then all the Canada Day facts you can imagine. Are you Canadian? Do you go big on Canada Day? Tell me all about your Canada Day celebrations!

My favourite month of the year is here. July makes me happy, just like this cute July Colouring Page printable. I love the warmer temperatures and frankly it’s the month of my birthday and my oldest girl’s birthday. In fact, I think that alone makes it worth celebrating. Add all the other stuff in there like the beach, or the cottage, and the lazy summer days by the pool. Put that all together and clearly that’s a recipe for the best month of the year. So happy July to you and welcome to the summer months as well. Thought it was time to post this fun July Colouring Page just in time for July 1st! Oh don’t get me wrong August has many merits too, but July is the start of summer so I always feel much less stressed about the clock ticking down to end of summer. In fact, around here the warmer temperatures always last well into September but July and August are the months that our kids have off school in Ontario. So we make the most of them. Have you got a lot planned for the summer months? Do you have all their camps booked yet? If not, there’s still a bit of time to get the kids signed up for stimulating summer Stem Camp. One of my girls will definitely take two weeks in Muskoka at Pioneer Camp Ontario. We shared a post about that earlier in June. And the other one is working all summer. So it will be a busy one too. Canadian Content! Canada Day is right around the corner which means it’s time for Canadian content! See above for a Canada Day Fill In the blanks activity. Here’s my Canada Day word search for kids. There’s also a Canada Day Maze and Canada Day Facts post you should read if you are Canadian and need something fun to read or do this weekend. By the way if you haven’t seen this Maple Bacon Cupcakes recipe yet, you need to see it and bookmark or Pin it for later. And who could forget this one Best Butter Tarts on the Planet. This is my most pinned and made recipe here. How Do I Print This July Colouring Page Printable? To print this out just right click on the above image or click on the PDF link below. Don’t forget to visit my Pinterest Board Free Printables page for more fun games and word searches and easy ways to keep kids busy this summer. Tell me what is your favourite month of the year?

This month have some fun with this Canada Day matching game. It’s a great way for kids to spend a few moments when you are getting dinner ready or doing something that needs to be done. Canada Day is one of my favourite summer events. First of all, it heralds the start of summer and second of all, it is close to my daughter’s birthday. She was a July 2nd baby. So, that makes her birthday so easy to remember. But, it means many people are always away that time of year and party throwing is tricky. Don’t miss the Canada Day Fill Ins page I have available here too for free. Canada Day is Ideal for Celebrating Canada Day is next month. Hard to believe it’s this far into the year. I have been running some free Canada Day printables here this week. I know that the kids are home soon and some of you will be looking for extra activities to keep them busy so hopefully some of these help a bit. Freebies I also have a free printables Pinterest board if you are really in need of some colouring pages or fun activities for the kids. Do you celebrate? With it being smack in the middle of the week this year we will likely not do too much different than we would any other day of the year. We will each be working. The kids are at day camp. What have you got planned this week? Instructions To download this one you can click on the link below and download and print. Don’t forget to check out the Canada Day Word Search too.

Road trip season has begun in earnest around here, so I am stocking up on a few road trip necessities. Car and van trips can be equal parts fun and chaos. Stack the deck in favour of fun and be prepared for anything with these popular brands. This past weekend we headed to Muskoka and the Huntsville area for a weekend away at Ontario Pioneer Camp Blogger’s Weekend. We have several more road trips and plane trips in the works this season and I am looking forward to each one. BUT, I am also preparing for each because road trips with kids can sometimes equal chaos and upset stomachs. A couple of years ago we had a road trip that was incredibly unpleasant. One daughter had some sort of upset with her stomach. Not really sure what happened there. But the second we hopped in the van for the drive through Toronto she got car sick. Luckily we eventually met up with a bus full of bloggers and a Mama blogger took one look at my green girl and broke out the children’s chewable Gravol. Gravol is one of our most important summer road trip necessities here. That one trip and endless car sick experience made a Gravol fan out of this Mom. Canada Day kicks cottage season into high gear. That means family gatherings, fireworks and cross-country road trips. There are a lot of things that can leave children feeling sick. Here are my seven road trip necessities (and they are also made in Canada.) Gravol™ Gravol™ is part of our medicine cabinet arsenal. For children who suffer from car sickness (or too many turns on the merry-go-round), this fits the bill: GRAVOL™Kids™ Quick Dissolve Chewables. These great tasting cherry-flavoured tablets offer the best in convenience and portability, eliminating the need to take with water. That makes these ideal for road trips and plane trips too. These are great for treatment of nausea, vomiting and dizziness due to motion sickness. Gravol™ Quick Dissolve Chewables comes in a version for adults too in great-tasting zesty orange-flavour. Prefer organic relief? GRAVOL™ Natural Source™ Ginger Liquid Gel Capsules are a Natural Health Product made with naturally sourced certified organic Ginger (the only medical ingredient) for the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting. GRAVOL™ Natural Source™ Ginger Liquid Gel capsules are taste free, easy to swallow, and non-drowsy. I use these ones myself. I find they are just right for me and they don’t make me drowsy. With a good Canadian Gingerale sometimes that’s all I need to stop churning stomach after food that doesn’t agree with me. Ovol™ – Ovol™ helps to relieve one of the most embarrassing (and painful) stomach problems – gas! Ovol™ Ultra Strength Softgels work quickly to break down trapped gas in the stomach and intestines. It helps gas bubbles fuse together making them easier to get rid of through belching or flatulence. To relieve a baby’s gassy tummy, Ovol™ Drops provide gentle and fast relief of colic, bloating and gas. The pleasant mint-flavoured drops make them easy for parents to administer. If you have a baby you should have some of these on hand. Diovol™ Nothing more predictable for me than heartburn after a big meal. Diovol™ Liquid Plus Mint helps cut the heartburn. Diovol™ Tablets Plus Tropical Fruit work well for those who don’t like the mint taste of Diovol Liquid Plus Mint. Diovol doesn’t stop the body from its naturally producing acid – it reacts to neutralize or buffer excess stomach acid. Road Trip Necessities: Summer Road Trips don’t have to be a pain in the neck. They can be fun for everyone as long as you keep a few road trip necessities on hand for emergencies. What are your tried and true ‘Made in Canada’ products that you rely on in summer? I am part of the Church and Dwight Blog Ambassador team and as such I received compensation and a few other perks. My opinion is all my own and it is also 100% truthful.

This Canada Day Maze is just simple fun for a summer day. Canada Day is one of my favourite summer events to celebrate. It falls right before my daughter’s birthday and it heralds summer too. So bring on the pool parties and the lazy long fun summer days for everybody. This year I don’t really plan to do much out of the ordinary. I will be working mostly, but I will also take the time to dive into the pool and enjoy the beautiful month of July. I love July. It’s my favourite month of all and also the month of my birth and my oldest daughter’s birthday too. Plus it’s hot. LOL. Are they crying “I’m bored” yet? This Canada Day Maze printable will help. When school lets out it’s inevitable that at some point the kids will begin to miss the constant activity and classmates. But there are a few easy ways to keep them occupied just long enough to get them through that nasty period of boredom. Start with my free printables pinterest board, especially good for rain days and road trips. You can find many budget friendly activities there for kids of all ages. There are colouring pages too. This activity maze for Canada Day ought to keep them happy for a bit too. I don’t know many kids who refuse the challenge of a maze activity page. I print these ones out for my younger daughter and carry some with me when we travel and when we go to restaurants. Better to be prepared than to listen to: “Are we there yet?” hundreds of times. How to Print: Feel free to download the printable above in one of two different ways: Right click and save and then download. Don’t right click any other content here because that’s never okay. But this is one instance where I give you permission to take this printable. You can also download it from the link below to Canada Day Maze. Canada Day Maze And just an FYI, if anyone has trouble solving this one, I am posting the answer on a page right after this post. Hopefully that will help. But don’t download the solution until you have legitimately tried to solve the maze itself. Ideas For Ways to Use My Printables: Here’s a tip: my kids do overnight camp every year now and I pack some extra letters to drop off at the front office of the camp they attend so that they get a note from home each day and they feel safe and happy. I also add a little extra activity in their letters each year. Print out a couple of these free printables and colouring sheets and make sure to send some crayons and they will enjoy the surprise from home. Remember to read tomorrow for the solution to this Canada Day Maze, if you need it. Oh and here’s my Canada Day word search too.

This year we plan to be out of the country for our Canada Day celebration (well at least for the day that Canada Day actually falls on.) That will be odd because we often spend Canada Day at Niagara Falls or at home having a big party. See our family does summer big with multiple birthdays and anniversaries and cottage time and barbequing is a huge part of that tradition. This year though we had a chance to participate in several barbeques leading upto the big day and we helped host one for friends and family, with the help of Wonder + Simply Free and Mom Central Canada. We held the party early. As usual we started with the shopping and loaded up our carts with Wonder bread products. Love that the new Simply Free items are without preservatives. Wonder + Simply Free is the First Canadian National line of hamburgers and hot dogs free of artificial flavours and colours. No high fructose corn syrup or unbleached wheat flour. Actually, before I started blogging on this tour I had no idea all the Wonder bread products were made from unbleached flour. That makes me want to buy and share them more. Canada Day goes over big with the kids in our neighbourhood. My daughter is wearing the red hat. Our Canada Day birthdays are often barbeques. In our family we have a lot of small children still and frankly we all like knowing what is in the food we give them. This is party number one – a kid friendly Canada Day in our backyard. Canada Day last year And party number one was held with our family in Kitchener. This is my niece. In our extended family many people have food allergies and our celebrations can be cautious if we aren’t sure about ingredients in products. I love that Wonder + Simply Free is a product I can count on as nutritious for my kids and my family. WONDER+ SimplyFree has provided some free BBQ Recipes for my readers o Hopefully you had a chance to check out the first two WONDER+ SimplyFree recipes available through the Canadian Living, Summer Fun Comes Naturally site. You can see them here http://tiny.cc/a2k5r A simple alternative for the BBQ that we have occasionally used with these buns is really child friendly. Use a Wonder + Simply Free Bun (Hamburger usually) and open it then place a slice of Kraft cheese and a piece of ham inside. Pop on the BBQ for a couple of minutes (also can be done in the oven). Kids love a ham and cheese bun and it couldn’t be easier. Happy Canada Day! Happy Barbeque Season too! I participated in this blog tour on behalf of Wonder and Mom Central Canada and for doing so I received some materials to host a barbeque and a gift card.

I wholeheartedly, unabashedly love Canada Day. The first of July every year heralds summer here and we typically go out of our way to make this celebration of our country a fun family experience. Maybe it’s the fireworks. Or maybe it’s because it is the day before my eldest daughter’s birthday. Maybe it’s because I grew up in a time when we moaned at length through high school and university about the lack of a true Canadian culture. The lack of a Canadian identity. Entire careers and courses were made or taught on the topic. But somewhere in the last 10 years I think we discovered our Canadianness and tapped a source of pride. I believe we’ve found it – that quintessential Canadian identity. It may have taken us longer than the United States, and we may be quieter asserting it, but I believe we have arrived. My Payton, seen here at the right, would agree. Thankfully she may never grow up knowing a diffferent time when we paled in comparison to our southern neighbour, when we argued even as literary greats like Margaret Atwood, Timothy Findley, Leon Rooke and Margaret Laurence wrote our history and our future, that we did not exist distinctly separate from the Americans. Tommy Douglas, Pierre Trudeau, Hollywood North, Diefenbaker, Carol Shields, Alice Munro. Two years ago on Canada Day weekend our family witnessed the fireworks July 1 over Niagara Falls. It was the most impressive display I’ve ever seen. Last year we went to Chatham in the rain and stayed overnight at Wheels Inn. Sadly, that indoor amusement park has closed. How We Spent This Canada Day This year we almost let rainy weather sink us. But in the end once again we piled into our minivan and drove to the beach, joining family at a cottage near Point Clark. And remarkably the clouds parted, jokes and memories were shared and we took a road trip again. This is now our new family tradition. Our identity. Happy Birthday Canada!
