My 6 Favourite Podcasts for the Morning Commute

Paula — Fri, 16 Dec 2022 03:02:55 +0000

So, it’s been awhile since I shared a little about what I am up to these days. Six months ago I took a position as social lead at a marketing agency in Cambridge, just outside Toronto. I lead a team of talented social media professionals and I enjoy that. It’s a hybrid job which is the way of the post-pandemic world. Two days a week I drive to Cambridge, about an hour and ten minutes from my house in London, so I have time in the van and have discovered podcasts. These are 6 of my favourite podcasts to listen to in the van on the way to work. They are entertaining and educational and I think there’s a little something for everyone here. It’s no big secret that I like to support female entrepreneurs and I am lucky enough to know and to celebrate several of them, even some I call friends. When a few of my OG blogging friends launched podcasts I was excited to take them for a test-drive. They have become my go to first choices in my spare time too often. But in the car, when I can tune into the message and tune out the dullness of the drive to work, I can enjoy using the third space to learn. My Favourite Podcasts What She Said with Candace Sampson What She Said with Candace Sampson is the podcast I listen to religiously each week. When a new episode drops I am more than ready for it. Candace has a tremendously funny side, but she’s also got some pretty formidable skills at interviewing and has clearly got the right formula down. She makes my day several times a month when I tune into the segments about social justice topics I care about and want to learn more about. From experts who tackle parenting neurodiverse teens to travel experiences you’ll want to bookmark or add to your bucket list, plus the latest roundup of entertainment news and movie reviews, Candace cleverly packs the hour with information. Chatter That Matters with Tony Chapman This is a podcast I honestly didn’t even know about until last month and now Tony Chapman is a regular in my podcast lineup. How did I find this one? Erica Ehm often talks about Tony Chapman and I have heard her refer to him a few times on LinkedIn. I think it was the week she shared the episode featuring her sister Leslie that got me hooked because she’s genuinely fascinating and has lived many lives already and their conversation together just seemed flawless almost effortless. Chapman truly has the art of the gab. He covers fewer topics in one episode than some of the other choices on this list but that means he goes in depth with all the episodes I’ve heard so far. This one is really well done and he’s a respectful and talented interviewer also. Love that. Want to listen? I recommend this episode of Chatter That Matters featuring educator Ken Wong. Clearing a New Path with Shauna Rae Last year, I was working at a small marketing agency in Zorra Township, just outside London when someone mentioned Shauna Rae’s name in the context of a conference that was being planned. Her name wasn’t entirely unknown to me so I thought I’d check her podcast out. Often the topics she covers have a rural angle and as someone who lives in London, Ontario I find that interesting. Year one was focused on rural woman-identifying non binary and queer entrepreneurs. The diversity of the topics and guests makes this one of my picks for my favourite podcasts. My favourite episode from there recent days is this one featuring Anne Douglas. Avery Bright Life Lisa Thornbury and her amazing daughter Avery both do Avery Bright Life together and they tackle building independence as Avery grows. Episodes like When to Step in and When to Step Back provide great insight into how to parent a child who is not neurotypical. I love that Lisa’s lived experience is raw and honest and she never pulls any punches. She has a wicked sense of humour and shares that every episode. Her positive attitude and humorous take on life and the challenges in parenting keep me coming back. Here’s one of my favourite episodes. Big Blend Radio Lisa and Nancy are a mother daughter duo who share their adventures and interview travel writers, as well as industry leaders and those who somehow intersect with travel or hospitality. They have a wonderful conversational tone that I have always found charming and easy to engage with on the way to work or on a Sunday morning over coffee. They also have a ridiculous number of travel and lifestyle magazines. Full disclosure – I did one of their shows a couple of years ago. It was an episode about getting outdoors and celebrating spring break in Vermont. What makes this one of my favourite podcasts is the duo themselves to be honest. Lisa and Nancy do a spectacular job of leading a conversation and educating listeners to all the ways one can see the world. Ten Percent Happier This Ten Percent Happier is one that I started over a year ago, because I was looking to grow positivity and gratitude and build a stronger mindset. I mean, I think that is a goal for a lot of people. This is a social psychology kind of podcast that has a self help slant. Listen in when you need a little motivation or simply when you are in a rut. Thinking About Starting a Podcast? You might want to read up on getting started. Here’s an easy to read podcasting book. The Blue Yeti bundle is highly recommended by Amazon and many people I know. This post contains affiliate links as a service to readers. Do you have any favourite podcasts. Six Netflix Series to Watch with Your Teen Now

Paula — Mon, 19 Oct 2020 14:51:00 +0000

These days we are spending so much more time in our homes that it’s inevitable at some points we resort to curling up on a sofa to watch Netflix. I have teens, so over the last seven months we have often looked at each other and said Netflix? So, we thought we’d share some recommendations for Netflix Series to Watch with Your Teen Now. Sometimes we all feel like binge watching something…and off we go often to the family room in the basement to queue up the next in a series. It’s actually something I enjoy on cold days when the weather is rainy or dreary or just not nice enough to be hanging out on the porch or the deck. So, here are our picks for Netflix Series to watch with your teen now. My kids are 16 and 18, and we generally don’t watch anything overly graphic, violent or sexual. I am no fan of extreme violence and honestly that kind of content interferes with sleep. So, we stick to mostly family friendly. Several of these I would not recommend for anyone under the age of 14 though. Best Netflix Series to Watch with Teens Now Tiger King Well, this was nothing if not entertaining. There is some gross graphic content here which speaks of animal abuse, drug abuse and also sexist content. Hints of murder…Carol Baskin. But, it is curiously compelling to watch Tiger King even so. Watch If: Your teen is into binge-watching something and you have a day or two to spare. Also, if you are doing something fairly routine at the same time, folding laundry, editing photos etc. When I am editing photos I sometimes sit downstairs and watch these types of things with my kids. Do Not Watch: If your kids are super sensitive to animal abuse or overly suggestible. Also, let’s be real here don’t watch it if you are a homophobe. Also, what are you doing here if you are a homophobe? Cobra Kai My kids both are martial artists, so they were very into starting this one. Also, they have seen Karate Kid dozens of times. We were so curious about this as a family. This series is simply pure nostalgia and also it’s honestly kind of entertaining. Watch If: You loved Karate Kid and can get by hearing the word PUSSY. Literally, offensive as hell at times. But here’s where I go with that…it is a jumping off point for a lot of conversations about sexism and racism. Inappropriate language. You have martial artists. Do Not Watch: If Under 14. Too many instances of rude language. Also lots of racist comments in Season 2 when a Sensei returns from the original movie. Brooklyn 99 Just purely a funny series. The constant revolving door or old Saturday Night Live comedians is so worth watching. Both of the girls started watching this at different times over the course of several years actually. Watch If: You enjoy seeing a diverse cast and love humour. Witty as heck. Do Not Watch: I can’t think of many reasons to not watch. I love the sense of humour here and the characters are crazy witty. Umbrella Academy Filmed in nearby Hamilton, Ontario, this series has a lot going for it. Elliott Page is fantastic in everything undertaken. Also, as my daughter says, this actor could play a teen for life. Check out the Umbrella Academy merchandise and colouring books. Watch If: If you are Canadian then you need to watch. Also, if your kids are into animation, comic books or any kind of superhero magical content they will enjoy this. My 19-year-old introduced me to this series and I love it. We are halfway through the second season. Do Not Watch: Not everyone is a superhero fan, so if there’s no way you can get into that kind of sci-fi then this might not be the Netflix series to watch with your teens. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina This recommendation comes from my daughter, Payton. Watch If: Perhaps you were a fan of Sabrina, Teenage Witch and your teen is relating to the witches and wizards escapist kind of content on Netflix. This will appeal to both of you. Do Not Watch: If you hated Sabrina, then you might not want to bother getting invested in this. Thank Goodness for Netflix! These are a few of our picks for great Netflix Series to Watch with teens right now. We are still finishing Umbrella Academy and we’ve only just begun Sabrina. Can’t wait to see where both of these series go next. Bring on the Popcorn Curling up during the pandemic and asking what Netflix series to watch next has been a common phenomenon here and in many homes. Watching occasional Netflix series with the kids has been one of my favourite things to do. We might not do this often, but when we do, we really just enjoy the time together. Do you have any of your own Netflix series recommendations?

Huntsville, Alabama – Out of this World Attractions

Paula — Tue, 11 Jul 2017 12:26:49 +0000

Huntsville, Alabama is gaining popularity as a tourist spot for those visiting the south. And there are good reasons, as I discovered recently, when I visited this vibrant city. With everything there is to do and see in Huntsville, it’s no wonder tourists are catching on. From the U.S. Space and Rocket Center to the Von Braun Center, Huntsville, Alabama has a host of family friendly things to do. Family Fun in Huntsville, AL If you’re planning a trip to the southern part of the U.S., Huntsville, Alabama should be on your radar. This city is vibrant, smart, friendly, and the food is authentic southern comfort food that you will crave deeply after returning home. In fact the food alone will spoil you on BBQ for life. Never mind the Mac and Cheese or baked beans. Huntsville is a perfect city for families, couples, foodies and those who love to learn on any trip. U.S. Space and Rocket Center See a real space shuttle, explore the universe on the big screen with amazing presentations, and bask in the wonder of the solar system and beyond at the world famous U.S. Space and Rocket Center. There are interactive workshops for the kids. There are space camps for all ages too. Plan to spend at least 6 hours there to fully enjoy all the center has to offer. If you have time, plan ahead and sign up for space camp. I promise you will love it. I did. OR consider Aviation Challenge Camp, which I got a quick glimpse into. Sharing my story about space camp here next week. Huntsville Botanical Garden If you love nature, Huntsville Botanical Garden is for you. With a wide variety of plants, trees, and shrubs; plenty of open space for the kids to run and play; and eateries; and even a new miniature train running through the garden, Huntsville Botanical Garden is fun for all ages. Take in the Local Craft Beer Scene Local craft beers are growing in popularity here in Huntsville and doing a beer trail tour can be a great way to spend an afternoon. Get a Craft Beer Trail Card at the Huntsville/ Madison County Visitor Center and follow the trail to sample the local craft beers. Get your card punched at each of the stops along the way. You can also get the cards at one of the craft brewers on the trail. At the end of the tour you will not only have enjoyed one of each of the amazing beers featured, but when you hand in the punch card you will also get a Huntsville souvenir bottle opener. Bridge Street Town Centre Okay this is one we stumbled upon one night while out walking. When we visited Huntsville we stayed for two nights at the Home 2 Suites in the Research Park area. We walked over to have dinner at Kona Grill based on the excellent recommendation of the concierge and we found this outdoor mall lifestyle park. I could have spent all day there but we had several other things to do. Amazing restaurants, a carousel, a movie theatre and some unique and trendy boutique shops alongside some outlet style stores as well. Take your time. Monte Sano State Park Located just south and east of Huntsville, AL, Monte Sano State Park is a must see for anyone traveling to the area. With 2,140 acres of pristine natural beauty, The Monte Sano Lodge, and 14 rustic cabins, Monte Sano State Park is perfect for day trips out and about or a full vacation experience for those who want to really get back to nature. Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment For lovers of the arts, Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment is a must. Featuring an art gallery as well as concerts, events, and workshops, Lowe Mill is a place that delivers something to everyone. A.M. Booth’s Lumberyards We had the opportunity to attend an opening night TBEX party here and were blown away. Such a perfect example of reusing a space and re-envisioning something in the downtown core that fits and is magnetic. What a welcome! This is a 100 year old lumberyard that’s been refurbished. There are easily a half dozen rooms lending the space to numerous different kinds of celebrations all at once. We heard a live band performing outdoors and then moved inside for food and drinks, while a few feet away was another singer accompanied by guitar with cheese and crackers on a table. Beyond that was a bar and a country folksy singer, and in the outdoor kind of area were displays from numerous sponsors of the conference. LOVED this space. Read more about A.M. Booth’s Lumberyards here: U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum If you or a member of your family loves history, the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum is an excellent place to go on a trip to Huntsville, AL. With a wide variety of World War II equipment, uniforms, vehicles, and more, this memorial museum offers an in-depth look at one of the biggest wars in our history. The museum also has displays dedicated to other wars in our history complete with memorabilia. Huntsville, Alabama is Out of this World A lot of people will naturally think of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center when they think of Huntsville, AL, but you can’t discount the rest of the amazing attractions here. Whether you’re a nature lover, an art connoisseur, a lover of space, food, or more, Huntsville, AL has something for you. The spots listed above are a few of the attractions that left an impression on me when we visited. There’s so much to discover in Huntsville, AL.

Paula — Fri, 23 Jun 2017 13:03:01 +0000

It’s summer which around here means pool party. I don’t drink often, and when I do it’s the occasional social drink, mostly around the pool. My favourites are Margaritas and Mojitos. 10 AWESOME Power Rangers Ideas – Crafts, Costumes and Recipes

Paula — Mon, 15 May 2017 11:27:31 +0000

One weekend recently I visited my niece and nephews in Toronto. We always have a great time when we drive to Toronto to see them and we had a delicious ham dinner too. My niece and nephews are 8, 6 and 3 and they are busy kids. The boys adore baseball so my youngest spent a lot of time playing catch. After dinner the TV went on. Netflix of course. My niece started jumping up and down singing the Power Rangers theme song, so that was what the kids ended up watching. The Power Rangers are so old they are new again. That totally astonishes me. But it really shouldn’t by now I suppose. Everything new and nostalgic is fair game for TV and Movie producers these days. Anyways, I really could not get into the show and found it super ridiculous. But the kids loved it. My teen was not at all buying the special effects. But it really didn’t matter because the kids were cuddled up and quiet and calm and she enjoyed the snuggles. LOL. That got me wondering if there were any great posts out there about Power Rangers Ideas that I could share with my readers. So, here are a few costumes, crafts and treats you can make with your Power Ranger wannabes. [tweetthis]Ten Fun Power Rangers Crafts, Recipes and Costume Ideas. Family Friendly Entertainment with Wind at My Back #TMMGG16

Paula — Sun, 27 Nov 2016 15:49:55 +0000

Family friendly entertainment is important to me. I know my kids see and hear things out in the world that I have no control over. But at home, I want to make sure that the shows we watch are pretty wholesome. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not All PG, All The Time. We’ll watch Marvel movies and on my own I watch The Walking Dead. But when we watch together, family friendly entertainment is the rule. Family Friendly TV – Wind at My Back This Holiday Season why not give a gift set of one of the most family friendly shows that’s ever aired here in Canada? Disney On Ice at Budweiser Gardens All Weekend #DisneyonIce

Paula — Fri, 11 Mar 2016 21:11:45 +0000

Are you looking for some fun family entertainment to kick off your March break? Look no further than Budweiser Gardens and Disney on Ice. Disney on Ice Dare to Dream is on at Budweiser Gardens all weekend. It opened last night. We have had a longstanding tradition here of attending Disney on Ice most years since the kids were small. Many years when they were little we would enter the contests at the local libraries and earn tickets for reading dozens of books and logging them there. But tickets are affordable and you can easily get four tickets for $100 roughly. Plus this show is great family entertainment value in my opinion. Disney on Ice is always a huge treat and a special family event. Plus let’s face it, kids of all ages can easily appreciate how beautiful the skating is in these wonderful shows by Feld Entertainment and Disney on Ice. This particular show is wonderful family entertainment. Dare to Dream doesn’t disappoint with its heavy focus on Disney princesses, both old and new. A highlight of this year’s show is sure to be Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder. Their acrobatics are really stunning. We enjoy watching how Budweiser Gardens is transformed every year to become a gymnasium of sorts for flying princesses. As always, hosts Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse kickstart the show. Your kids will be sure to enjoy the traditional princess stories as much as they love the plot lines from Tangled. If you are looking for a great family entertainment opportunity this weekend then this is the show for you. For more information you can visit http://www.disneyonice.ca/ The show runs March 10 to 13th in London. To save money you can make these now and take them with you: Mickey Mouse Ears printable and then there’s always these awesome cookies. I know it says Halloween Mickey Mouse cookies BUT you can easily make these princess colours too. I am a Feld Family Activator and as such I receive product, compensation, or tickets to attend shows like this one. My opinion is all my own.

Tomorrowland Film is a Hit for The Whole Family #TMMGG2015

Paula — Wed, 04 Nov 2015 09:26:41 +0000

The Tomorrowland film is one of the best movies I’ve seen in quite some time. It’s also one of the last movies I watched at the theatre. That shows you how often I get out! Luckily if you are like me and rarely are able to get to the movie theatre now you can watch Tomorrowland at home. Tomorrowland is one of those movies that exudes everything that’s great about a family film. With a ton of action, adventure, and heart, the Tomorrowland film has something for everyone, from kids to adults. The Tomorrowland Film is Perfect for All Ages One of my favorite parts of the Tomorrowland film is the way it weaves different aspects of films into one overall family-friendly movie that has something for every member of the family. From the feeling of adventure that you get when Casey Newton begins to unravel the mystery of the city of Tomorrowland and how to get there to the action of trying to evade androids to the heart of watching Frank Walker find that part of him that he’d thought he’d lost, the Tomorrowland film is truly an instant classic that the whole family can enjoy. I’m not going into specifics, because I hate spoilers, but I will say that this movie has no shortage of mystery on top of all that action and adventure. There were points in the movie where I was on the edge of my seat, but there were also parts where I thought I might cry. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, you’ll know these parts when you see them. There’s a plot with the young actors in the film that is very moving. On top of the story and feel of the Tomorrowland film, the acting is also superb. Each and every actor delivered their characters in a real, believable way that’s hard for some actors to do in a fantasy film like Tomorrowland. I found myself relating to and believing in each and every character and why they did what they did. That’s a make or break for me, and the Tomorrowland film delivered. It’s not surprising with a cast like Britt Robertson, George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Tim McGraw, and Kathryn Hahn. The Tomorrowland Film is a Magical Mystery Tour de Force You might think this heading is a bit over the top, but I assure you it is not. The Tomorrowland film is one of those movies that’s so good, when it comes out on cable I’ll put it on loop. Seriously. It’s sweet and charming and out of this world with a strong message too. My kids enjoyed seeing this movie at the theatre and they will love having it here to watch as often as they wish. (Also it’s a great option to keep in the car for the DVD there) It’s been a long time since my family has been to a movie that we all genuinely thoroughly enjoyed together. I love the Tomorrowland film, and I think you will, too. If you don’t have it in your collection, make sure you get it. It’s outstanding and now available on BluRay and DVD. I am adding this to my gift guide this year because I also think it would be a great gift for the movie lover on your list. I received a copy of this movie for consideration here. My opinion is all my own.
