Alright let’s all have some fun with Zoom. I mean, listen I am fully aware that Zoom is a grind sometimes. It is a blessing and also a grind. So, why not capture a little more of the fun side of zoom with this zoom summer charades game. This past year I think we’ve all had a love hate relationship with Zoom. It’s great to have as a tool to keep business going and jobs thriving. I mean I am grateful for technology and so many Zoom moments and connections with my colleagues and my family members who I can’t see right now. Silly Zoom Pandemic Moments During the pandemic, we have all enjoyed a bit of the lighter side of Zoom at times. Like the lawyer cat zoom incident that went viral or the million times our friend’s and colleague’s pets have made their appearance known during home office Zoom calls. Oh and that one time during a news interview when the speaker’s toddler raced around the room in the background of frame. Hahaha…Good times. Fun Zoom Sessions But it can be fun occasionally too. That first Easter we all jumped on Zoom and ate dinner together strangely while also apart. It worked for the most part. At least we got to see each other that day even if it was over the computer. We have also done Zoom Kahoot sessions with my niece and nephews and FaceTimed them a lot. So there are positive ways to enjoy the tool. These Zoom summer charades are just another way to help get through the pandemic. So have fun! Easy Charades Download Instructions Just click on the download button below and it will take you to a clean version of this cute five-page printable activity for families. What Creative Ways Are You Using Zoom? Have any clever creative ways that you use Zoom? Drop them here and maybe I will give them a try too.

I mean ours is always important but we need this space again this year as an extension of our living space and our home. We have a pool so we use our backyard a lot during the summer months especially. Most of our summer activity revolves around the swimming pool, or part time jobs and camping. But there are some days you simply can’t do either of those things.

This season, I am hunting down easy activities that remind us to find gratitude and give thanks. This Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt is a fun way to find some gratitude and involve the entire family in the process. What are Your Thankful For? Finding Gratitude in the every day and celebrating that can be hard work. I have been working on this during the year and I can tell you some days I succeed and others not so much. This year has tested most of us, I think. Typically, I start my day with a gratitude exercise, but to be very honest that is sometimes forgotten when I am dragging myself out of bed and I am totally drained of energy. Food is Worth Celebrating Thanksgiving is one of my daughter’s favourite holidays because of the turkey actually. She lives for turkey cooked by my husband and sometimes cooked by her uncle or aunt. So there’s always food to be grateful for and frankly sharing a meal and laughter with friends is one of the greatest ways to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company. Even on the hardest days, I still believe that it is always worth trying to find and express gratitude daily. Thanksgiving is a time traditionally when we make a moment for that practice. Ultimately, I like to remind myself though that no matter where I am in the world on Thanksgiving Day, I have a lot to give thanks for. What are Your Plans This Year? This year we will be here in Ontario, Canada for Thanksgiving. For a few years, I travelled every Thanksgiving, but our tradition is to visit my brother and his family in Toronto. I look forward to making that trip again this coming month. Hopefully, Ontario continues to heal from Coronavirus and numbers don’t climb again. Of course, we will be watching the numbers and advisories closely and if they creep up then we will need to adjust our expectations. Thanksgiving is for Family It seems like it has been forever since we drove to Toronto. For months we were all social distancing and unable to drive even so far as Toronto just two hours away. As soon as the restrictions lifted though, they drove to see us and to stay with us for a weekend in July. That was so overdue and welcome. In August, we visited them in Sauble Beach at a cottage. How to get this Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt This year I might print this Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt out and take it with me. I will most definitely be collecting seed pods and saving them for the spring. Checking that off the list soon. You might also appreciate the seasonal Crossword Puzzle. Happy Thanksgiving! My family, good health and a job I love are all things that I give thanks for today and every day. What are you grateful for today?

How many times have you played Classic Yard Games over the years? I’d hazard a guess that it has been awhile. No shame in that. Me, too, actually. Back when the kids were small we played these outdoor games together often. Recapturing Childhood Remember the romance of childhood? I’m not talking about Hallmark movie romance, but that pure magical feeling that anything is possible and the only limits are your creativity and maybe Mom yelling bedtime out the front door or the window long after the sun sets. Staying up late on those seemingly endless summer nights to play, without a care in the world. No taxes or mortgages or worries in the world. Tag, Hide and Seek, Corn Hole, Freeze Tag – all of these are not only fun, but great opportunities to get outside and be active. That’s one thing that has been missing for weeks, maybe months this year. Check this cute new game out while you are here – > Throw Throw Burrito. Also, this adorable Hide and Seek Dog Toy is a hoot. This classic yard games post may contain affiliate links as a service to readers. I receive a small commission via purchases made from qualifying links. Those days, a simple bicycle or a game of tag with friends, even freeze tag was the ideal way to spend a few hours. Never mind work. Wouldn’t it be amazing to recapture some of that again? When my kids were small we made up various new, fun versions of these classic yard games. We played many of these old favourites in the dark in the safety of our own backyard and to this day we still have many fond memories of the nights we spent playing Dark Tag and Hide and Seek in the dark after supper at our old home. The beauty of most of these outdoor games is that you need very few items to play them. Imagination and a few close friends or family members and you are off to the races.

Why not take a quick local morning adventure or day trip to one of these U Pick Farms near London, Ontario? One of the things I miss the most this year, during this particular season is the abundance of local markets that are usually open. I often have enjoyed gathering all of the shades of the rainbow from Masonville Farmer’s Market, open from May through October in the Masonville Mall parking lot near my neighbourhood. But, this year with Coronavirus still in the driver’s seat we have all learned to proceed without a lot of our favourite conveniences. However, even with local Farmer’s Markets closed, I don’t want to sacrifice getting my family fresh local fruits and vegetables. That came to a head on Canada Day, when my oldest daughter, the one who is baking all of the great recipes here, asked to go pick strawberries. Can We Go Berry Picking? Yes, you can still go berry picking. The local U Pick Farms near London Ontario are actually in high demand. Without Farmer’s Markets on every corner, people are finding ways to drive to their favourite area farms and get the goods straight from the source. One note – check each resource below for current information. Berry picking season is short and new protocols are in place. Some will tell you that they have a drive through or curb-side pickup and others are letting people pick their own as long as they have masks and are maintaining social distancing rules. Follow the rules! Millar Berry Farms This is the U Pick Farm just outside Lambeth where we went on Canada Day. We took our masks and some water and paid for two of their plastic baskets and loaded them up. It was a lot of fun for the girls, even in 30 degree Celsius weather. Right across the street from the U Pick farmer’s field is the Millar Berry Farms farm stand. I heard from someone staffing the stand that they are busier than ever before. We left with zucchini, asparagus, two huge baskets of fresh picked strawberries, peas in the pod (we love these and miss them often because the season is so very short) and also some scrumptious fresh baked lemon tarts. Highly recommend this one. Millar Berry Farms was only about a 20 minute drive from north London. It’s obviously closer if you live in south London. Heemans A very good friend of mine was just there two weeks ago. She loved that Heemans has adapted and has a picnic area as well as a drive through. Her kids are too young for berry picking just yet. So, drive through plus quick picnic after at Heemans makes a great outing. Heeman’s is out on Nissouri Rd. in Thorndale. Their web site currently indicates that strawberries are almost done and that the U pick is now closed for 2020. But, the drive through is till open and they also have a shop with various goods. That’s worth checking out. Kustermans Berry Farm My current understanding is that this one is not open yet for the usual children’s attractions that are such a huge draw every year. But, that said, they have blueberries possibly later this week. Right now, I am checking their site for daily updates and also checking their Facebook page for blueberry news. If I see you there at Kustermans, I will respect your social distancing and I might not recognize you if you are wearing a mask as I am. Nonetheless, know that I am probably smiling at you. Talbotville Berry Farm Even though they are an essential business, this St. Thomas area U Pick on Sunset Drive, St. Thomas, says they made the choice to close down and protect their staff. They are offering curb-side pickup and online ordering though according to the web site. Check the Talbotville Berry Farm site, because as you well know, things change daily here now! Apple Land This one is just out Dundas Street, not so far. When it is late August, start checking their web site. We go to Apple Land most years to pick apples. It’s just fun and such great fresh apple varieties. The corn maze also is a hoot and there’s a petting zoo. So, some of you might be wondering about Crunican Orchards. Crunican has curb-side pickup and a market space with local seasonal produce and fresh apples of course. They are not a Pick Your Own Farm. Check their Facebook page out for details about what is being offered and when it is available. All the Berries and Fruits! Did you actually realize there were this many U Pick Farms near London, Ontario? At times, it has felt like we have sacrificed a lot of income and freedom, with good reason and in the interest of public health, but you need not sacrifice fresh fruits and vegetables if you can get your family to one of these U Pick Farms near London Ontario!

We travel, cruise, stay in cottages, and love that life. But sleeping on the ground in a tent is not for me. But, that said, there are so many different ways to access camping or glamping now that you really need never sleep on the ground in a tent to get all the benefits of camping. This past week we had the chance to go stay in a yurt for several days at Wasaga Pines. Wasaga Beach is one of my family favourites in Ontario and Wasaga Pines, just outside the beach area, is owned by Parkbridge Resorts. So, I figured it had to be trustworthy and fun. After all we love Parkbridge Resorts. So, when I learned that Wasaga Pines had yurts available for family stays this year, I worked hard at finding a date to go visit. The last week of August, right after my younger daughter returned from two weeks of camp, we drove to Wasaga Beach. On the way there, we picked up my nephew Alex, who is the same age as Ainsley and was equally excited to try yurt life. Camping is an affordable easy summer family travel style that works for many. We love travel and we enjoy being outdoors. Here in Canada, nature’s beauty is on full display in summer and Fall too, and it’s so much fun to get out there and enjoy it. What isn’t fun for me is setting up a tent, and sleeping on the ground. Even sleeping inside a tent with a sleeping bag, you can still feel the rocks or the dampness of the ground. Yurt life is my ideal way to experience camping. We really loved our four nights in a yurt at Wasaga Pines Cottage & RV Resort. Yurt Life – The Perfect Camping Compromise Some hard core campers are all about sleeping in a tent on the ground. Others view camping as staying anywhere that’s outdoors like an RV or a cabin. These two camps have very different ideas about the outdoor experience. What we all loved about our Yurt at Wasage Pines Cottage & RV Resort is that it was the perfect compromise. Their yurts offer a rustic feel with the comforts that so many of us don’t want to give up – like beds and electricity! Their yurts are set up on platforms nestled in the woods, so you’re in the heart of nature while you stay a bit comfortable too. You still get to cook outdoors and gaze at the stars, but you can also enjoy sleeping on a bed and bring your laptop if you’re like me and work never stops. The bar fridge was useful for us too. Stocked it with fish and cooked it on the stove my sister-in-law lent us. Barbecues are available too for yurts. PIN FOR LATER – > Yurt Life at Wasaga Pines Cottage & RV Resort Gives You: Bunk Beds Futon Couch or Trundle Bed Dining Table and Chairs Electricity Picnic Table Fresh Water Available Nearby Comfort Station with Bathrooms, Hot Showers, and Heated Floors Nearby (honestly it was less than a five minute walk which mattered at 3 a.m.) Wasaga Pines is halfway between Wasaga Beach and Elmvale. It feels country like and yet you can drive anywhere you need to within ten minutes. We hit the beach twice while there. But you could also stay entirely on site and still have plenty to do. Before we left all three kids asked if we could return again next year. So I would definitely say that our first ever stay in a yurt was a great one thanks to Wasaga Pines and Parkbridge Resorts. There are many traditional camp sites at the RV resort and campground. And they have seasonal members too. Many of their kids were typically out and about and very friendly. The trio of teens I was traveling with easily made friends with several kids of various ages. Yurt Life is the Camping Life for Us! If you want to camp but still stay comfortable, yurt life is for you! The ability to get back to nature without all the discomfort is so great! If you’ve ever been camping in the classic way, you’ll really appreciate things like beds, electricity, and TOILET PAPER! We had a great time without feeling like we were cheating. The Yurt was comfortable and cozy too. I highly recommend giving the yurt life at Wasaga Pines Cottage & RV Resort a try. We were guests of Parkbridge and Wasaga Pines which means we stayed there and received accommodations in exchange for this honest post about the experience. My opinion is all my own and it is always truthful.

I have always loved Storybook Gardens. As a child we used to drive every summer to Storybook Gardens from Guelph Ontario, about two hours, just to visit what was then really just a small park and petting zoo. Storybook Gardens has blossomed and I still enjoy this lovely spot in the summer. I also enjoy skating with my family on the path they flood in the winter to make an ice rink. The new splash pad and the massive renovation that took place several years ago now was an excellent investment. Storybook offers interesting events occasionally and also rides. The pirate climber area and the toddler’s climber were also really smart additions drawing even more families than ever to the funspot. This year a giant sandbox has been added. Every year we visit, cheaply (prices are very good compared to places like Canada’s Wonderland) and this year I have even featured this spot on my blog. However, this past week when relatives came to town from Kitchener and we decided to meet at Storybook Gardens, it was truly the first time ever that I’ve been disappointed and disheartened. Here’s Why The greeter/cashier at the start of the visit was flat out rude, first to my sister-in-law and then to me. A coupon offered on line for Thursday visits in August was for family of four. My sister-in-law with three kids made up a family of four and yet was told that she couldn’t have used the offer because the family deal only applied if her husband was with her. Boo! Which made me wonder what they say to same sex couples. Or families who arrived with a grandparent instead of a husband? Poor Service When I asked to have my hand stamped so I could leave and go back in with lunch it was simple, but when the children needed stamps later the cashier made them wait 5 to 10 minutes on a day that was not remotely busy at all. Sadly, one of the giant slides had been vandalized and was roped off. It was a quiet day at the park but the ferris wheel also wasn’t working and a couple of animals were being shifted around so that the cages could be cleaned. Every year, we Londoners read in the paper of the facility losing money and city councillors wondering why. Frankly our poor service this year at Storybook Gardens answered part of that question for us. Sadly, I don’t think my sister-in-law and her out of town family will be rushing back anytime soon. My Rating – Thrifty Mommas Tips rating $$$ out of $$$$$.This local attraction is still fun and inexpensive, but service is hit and miss. That’s hopefully not everyone’s experience, but it was ours this day.
