Do you have sensitive skin? Me too sometimes. My younger daughter is the same actually but she’s prone to itching and feeling the impact of harsh fragrance first. Recently I bought a night cream that seemed excellent and was super moisturizing. But it actually made my skin break out. So I stopped using it and gave my skin a break. Then I tried it again. Sure enough I broke out immediately again. When you are an entrepreneur running your own business and brand that’s completely not cool. And together with my daughter we have many stories like that. Sometimes I absorb the loss and don’t use a product again but other times I am faced with returning products that don’t work. Do you have really sensitive skin? Can you relate? A lot of people with sensitive skin find themselves having to constantly return makeup due to allergic reactions, or breakouts. No matter what the case is, more brands are coming out with lines for sensitive skin or allergies. They might cost a little bit more sometimes, but it can be worth it in the long run to have nice healthy skin. And frankly it’s simpler to find something that works the first time instead of playing the return game. So what are you to do if you love makeup and need moisturizer regularly too? Here are a few tips on what can help your sensitive skin. Sensitive Skin Ideas Use Powders & Mineral Makeup Powder foundations, blushes and other mineral makeup won’t have a lot of ingredients that some other makeup products do, which is what causes the skin to get irritated. Using powders will cause a lot less skin irritations than using liquid foundations. Get Rid of Any Old & Expired Cosmetics Often sensitivity can develop suddenly. Even though a certain product didn’t cause any skin irritations, doesn’t mean it won’t cause problems now. Like food, beauty products can get spoiled. This is important to remember since makeup is being applied to the face and eyes. Eye infections can result and are hard to get rid of. I know way too much about pink eye here and other eye infections. Last year I had one that wouldn’t go away and ended up throwing out all eye makeup twice and starting over. A lifespan for cosmetics: foundations will last about a year; lipsticks lasts one year as well; toss out your mascara after four months; and your powders and blushes can last up to two years. One mistake many people make is forgetting to clean makeup brushes. It’s important to make sure makeup brushes are cleaned on a regular basis, because the dirt and germs on the makeup brushes can cause skin irritation. Find Earth-Tone Eye Shadows Use eye shadows that are earth-toned. For many, colors like cream, beige or tan cause less eye irritation. Many makeup artists will say that red dye used in some shadows causes problems for many people. Others may experience reactions to using purple eye shadows. These are two common and popular shades that can cause irritation to the eyes. Black eye liner and mascara products are the least allergenic of all the other colours. Use Sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or Higher Many dermatologists, makeup artists and skincare specialists will tell people to use products that have an SPF of 15 or higher in them. Check the amount of ingredients always too. The fewer the ingredients, the less likely the sunscreen will create irritation problems. A lot of make up brands are now making foundations that have an SPF of 15 or higher. Remember to check the labels before purchasing to make sure it has the SPF labeled clearly.

Pink eye prevention is your first line of defence against this common irritating illness. If you have kids, or ever were a kid (LOL), you know that pink eye is a very real, very CONTAGIOUS threat to your home. That’s because children touch everything and then touch their faces all the time. It can be a painful affair that can spread like wildfire through the home if not careful. So let’s take a look at pink eye prevention and treatment. What is Pink Eye Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the covering of the whites of the eye – the conjunctiva. It’s a transparent layer, but it still contains blood vessels, and if it gets infected, it can be extremely painful. Pink eye is top of mind for me because I had the worst case of pink eye (in both my eyes) just after New Year’s Day. My eyes were both red and extremely painful and one was crusted shut. This inflammation occurs from an infection in the covering and is caused in three different ways. Viral Pink Eye – This is the one that can spread to everyone. It’s caused by a virus, and while it’s extremely contagious, it will often clear up on its own within a few days. (Often comes after a cold) Bacterial Pink Eye – While not contagious, this type of pink eye should be addressed immediately, as lack of treatment could lead to serious eye damage. Allergic Pink Eye – This one is more annoying than dangerous. It’s your basic eye redness and swelling due to allergies. Pink Eye Prevention and Treatment Pink eye prevention and treatment are key things to know if you have children or if you work in high risk environments like schools ore any place where you have to work with the public. Happily, pink eye prevention is mostly common sense and most people do much of this already. Pink Eye Prevention Don’t share washcloths, hand towels, eye makeup, or tissues – anything you’d put on or near your eyes Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing Avoid rubbing or touching your eyes NEVER share coloured contacts (in fact, you shouldn’t wear them at all) Wash hands frequently Use hand sanitizer frequently Clean surfaces and shared phones frequently with antiseptic, antibacterial cleaner Always wear goggles when swimming Always practice excellent contact lens care Throw out your eye makeup. If you are an adult you need to replace all of your eye makeup after pink eye Remember that if your child has pink eye most schools will not let them attend school. It needs to be in check, i.e. treated, first. My daughter got this at least twice in the younger grades.[tweetthis]Pink eye can happen to kids or adults. Here’s what I learnt recently when I had pink eye. #health[/tweetthis] Pink Eye Treatment Pink eye prevention is the best solution, but you won’t win every battle against it. This recent winter bout was awful. I wore sunglasses for at least three days and missed waterslides and pools for a bit on doctor’s advice. So when Pink Eye rears its ugly head, here’s what you should do. Viral Pink Eye Treatment – This will usually run its course without any help. A cold wet washcloth applied to the eyes several times a day can help with the redness and swelling. Remember, DON’T let anyone else come into contact with that cloth! Bacterial Pink Eye Treatment – Treatment for this type of pink eye is usually antibiotic eye drops or eye ointments. (This is what I had and I required drops on the first day of my recent cruise.) Allergic Pink Eye Treatment – A cool, wet washcloth can help with inflammation and pain. You can also use over the counter antihistamines to help with symptoms. (especially helpful if it’s super itchy.) Pink Eye Prevention and Treatment – Avoid the Red Eyed Monster If you’ve had pink eye, you know just how important pink eye prevention and treatment is. Being on the receiving end of pink eye is no fun, but fortunately, there are ways to keep it at bay. The biggest thing to remember in pink eye prevention is to wash your hands and keep them away from your face. This winter I had pink eye multiple times. I had to get eye drops twice, but am finally better. Have you, or your kids, had pink eye?

Protecting skin is generally associated with blocking UV rays and moisturizing, but there’s one thing many women do almost every day that is hard on our skin. We wear makeup. To me makeup is a part of most days, but it’s also not the best for your skin. Now Skindinavia has a product that is great at protecting skin and helping it recover from makeup use. Protecting Skin from the Daily Routine If makeup suddenly fell out of fashion tomorrow would you care? I might actually. I tend to be pale without it and that’s not a great look for me. This year I have less and less time for makeup. It’s a total time suck in the morning and it can also be hard on skin. On winter nights I need to “nourish” my dry skin, so that’s not negotiable. And on days when I have in person meetings I apply makeup. But I enjoy those days when I can go without it entirely. Skindinavia Post Makeup Recovery Spray is designed to help skin recuperate from wearing makeup. It’s designed to help us fight the damaging effects of makeup like clogged pores, extra oil, and the resulting skin blemishes that can be caused by wearing makeup and what wearing it does to our skin. It’s simple to use. All you do is spray it on your skin within 5 minutes of removing your makeup, and that’s it. How Skindinavia Works This new post makeup recovery spray has only been on the market for a short time, but it’s already seen a major blast of popularity among makeup artists to keep skin clear after makeup removal. Skindinavia works by delivering zinc, magnesium, and willow bark to help keep skin clear up and feel refreshed after wearing makeup. These ingredients work to reduce oils on the skin as well as to tighten pores and reduce breakouts. In fact, Zinc has been shown to reduce skin breakouts by 50%. I have been using Skindinavia Post Makeup Recovery Spray for about a week. I love the feel of this refreshing spray after I wash my face and remove makeup and dirt from the day. It is light and soothing and seems to make skin radiant and dewy fast. Follow instructions and you will see for yourself. The hardest part of this new product is adding it to your routine and changing your post makeup habits. And while Skindinavia has been shown to work, what I’m just as excited about is that it’s a product that really thinks about our skin’s health. As I mentioned, it’s proven to reduce breakouts and improve skin, but it’s also paraben-free, and just as important to me, it’s cruelty-free. NO animal testing! Give Skin Some Love with Skindinavia Skindinavia is an easy to use spray designed for protecting skin from the daily ravages of makeup and it works. It helps protect our skin and leave it healthier than when we started using it by reducing breakouts, excess oil buildup, and big pores. If you wear makeup regularly, you know how hard it can be on your skin. Skindinavia is designed for protecting skin from the daily makeup grind. Check it out for yourself. I received product in order to write about this topic. My opinion is all my own and it is also truthful.

Mom, when can I wear makeup? My oldest daughter started asking about wearing makeup when she was ten. In my head I call her my breadcrumb daughter. She always leaves me little clues as to what she has been up to, almost as if she wants to be caught when she does something out of character or defiant. And around that time, my tubes of mascara went missing. Without much detective work, I could quietly find them in her desk drawer, or in her backpack. I mostly chalked that one up to curiosity. But the questions started then – at ten years old. When do I get to wear makeup? I am pretty sure that when she was ten she heard me, unlike now at 12 and a half. I am fully convinced that my oldest hears bells or Greek or birds chirping these days when I open my mouth to speak. “Yes, uh huh. Yup. Of course.” She says all the right things, but if I stop and say: “Can you repeat what I just said to me?” That usually ends with: I am sorry I wasn’t actually listening. When my mascara started disappearing, that was a jump off point for a real live teachable moment about tweens and makeup. The skin you get is for life. Mascara is not for kids. We don’t take other people’s makeup, especially eye makeup. We talked about getting pink eye and other infections from sharing makeup. We talked a lot about grooming and keeping skin clean and how makeup isn’t that much fun when you feel you have to do it every day. I personally don’t feel tweens and makeup go together naturally. But I left that out. Then we talked about the fact that she has beautiful skin and she might never need makeup. We both agreed nobody really NEEDS makeup. We also calmly talked about why she wanted to wear makeup. Even still, two years later her answers to these questions very often are: “Well, Dianna wears makeup and Eden and Jane wear makeup. And it’s cool.” These are not good enough reasons to do things, or to change behaviour. I don’t think tweens need makeup to be cool. My husband backs me up 100 % on that one. His Catholic upraising serves him well at times like this.”We are not talking about Dianna, or Eden or Jane,” he always says. “We are talking about you and our family. In our family, kids don’t wear makeup.” I have worn makeup since I was 14. I danced as a kid and I wore garish makeup for dance recitals, but I washed it off happily when we were all done the show. I am quite certain I didn’t defy my mother at least until I turned 13, and then I think I took makeup to school a couple of times. But mostly I didn’t have it, so I couldn’t wear it. When I was old enough to earn money and I had a part time job in grade nine, then I made my own decisions about makeup and clothing. Two years later, after this initial discussion, I am still a broken record. This weekend at dinner, my youngest daughter told me two girls in her grade four class, Bridget, and Zoe, not their real names, wear makeup to school every day. I know full well, from being in the school and attending field trips and assemblies, that MANY grade seven girls wear makeup. One has a nose piercing she got in grade six. Another has a strange piercing somewhere else. In grade six, my daughter told me that several girls snuck the makeup to school in their backpacks and applied it in the washrooms. Those girls would have been 11 and 12. That same year I witnessed grade six girls openly hugging and kissing their BOYFriends before hopping on the bus. They were dating, and going out. (I will have to write a post about this one because we often have similar conversations to which I say: Okay, so who drives these kids to their Dates? and who pays for their Dates?) I remember being a kid. I remember being in a hurry to grow up. But I know that if I had applied makeup routinely at school in grade 4 or 5 or 6, my Mom, or the teachers, or the principal of the school would have put the fear of God into me for being sneaky and inappropriate. It worries me a bit that this has somehow become okay. If the reasoning for wearing makeup were fully articulated and made sense I might have a different take on this. But right now at age 11 and 12 when girls wear makeup it’s generally, in my opinion, to make themselves look more attractive to other girls, or boys, or present an older more mature version of themselves to the world. That’s a very slippery slope. Are you a Mom of girls? Do you have a makeup rule in your home? When is it okay to wear makeup? What do you think about tweens and makeup?
