Now more than ever maintaining a morning routine is in everyone’s best interests. Kids thrive on routine and routines have frankly been hard to find during the pandemic at all. Post contains affiliate links as a service to readers. I make a small commission off of purchases made via qualifying links. When my daughter was small, because of her specific disability, she needed routines more than a neurotypical child would. Her body and brain just did not work without that consistent routine. A lot of kids work that way. Many need support and constant reassurance that they are safe and routines do that. Also, when my daughter was small she needed visual references and schedules to help with that daily routine. We used a lot of social stories and photo schedules mounted to velcro so we could switch the photos as needed. These are common tools for kids with autism and for those with FASD too. Morning Routine Made Simple Our old schedule used to sit in her room so that when she woke up she could see. First I wake up and straighten my bed. (When she was extremely small though that was not a thing at all.) The remainder of the velcro pictures would be photos of clothing and brushing your teeth. Take your pyjamas off, put your underwear on, pants next. Put a top on and socks. Next step come downstairs – breakfast. Grab my backpack and lunch and get ready to leave. Download This Morning Checklist When my youngest was little, we broke it down piece by piece and that helped for many years. Now that she is a teenager, it’s quite a different story. But at least they can set their own alarms now and for the most part they remember to brush their teeth. Download This Printable
