Six Netflix Series to Watch with Your Teen Now

These days we are spending so much more time in our homes that it’s inevitable at some points we resort to curling up on a sofa to watch Netflix. I have teens, so over the last seven months we have often looked at each other and said Netflix? So, we thought we’d share some recommendations for Netflix Series to Watch with Your Teen Now. Sometimes we all feel like binge watching something…and off we go often to the family room in the basement to queue up the next in a series. It’s actually something I enjoy on cold days when the weather is rainy or dreary or just not nice enough to be hanging out on the porch or the deck. So, here are our picks for Netflix Series to watch with your teen now. My kids are 16 and 18, and we generally don’t watch anything overly graphic, violent or sexual. I am no fan of extreme violence and honestly that kind of content interferes with sleep. So, we stick to mostly family friendly. Several of these I would not recommend for anyone under the age of 14 though. Best Netflix Series to Watch with Teens Now Tiger King Well, this was nothing if not entertaining. There is some gross graphic content here which speaks of animal abuse, drug abuse and also sexist content. Hints of murder…Carol Baskin. But, it is curiously compelling to watch Tiger King even so. Watch If: Your teen is into binge-watching something and you have a day or two to spare. Also, if you are doing something fairly routine at the same time, folding laundry, editing photos etc. When I am editing photos I sometimes sit downstairs and watch these types of things with my kids. Do Not Watch: If your kids are super sensitive to animal abuse or overly suggestible. Also, let’s be real here don’t watch it if you are a homophobe. Also, what are you doing here if you are a homophobe? Cobra Kai My kids both are martial artists, so they were very into starting this one. Also, they have seen Karate Kid dozens of times. We were so curious about this as a family. This series is simply pure nostalgia and also it’s honestly kind of entertaining. Watch If: You loved Karate Kid and can get by hearing the word PUSSY. Literally, offensive as hell at times. But here’s where I go with that…it is a jumping off point for a lot of conversations about sexism and racism. Inappropriate language. You have martial artists. Do Not Watch: If Under 14. Too many instances of rude language. Also lots of racist comments in Season 2 when a Sensei returns from the original movie. Brooklyn 99 Just purely a funny series. The constant revolving door or old Saturday Night Live comedians is so worth watching. Both of the girls started watching this at different times over the course of several years actually. Watch If: You enjoy seeing a diverse cast and love humour. Witty as heck. Do Not Watch: I can’t think of many reasons to not watch. I love the sense of humour here and the characters are crazy witty. Umbrella Academy Filmed in nearby Hamilton, Ontario, this series has a lot going for it. Elliott Page is fantastic in everything undertaken. Also, as my daughter says, this actor could play a teen for life. Check out the Umbrella Academy merchandise and colouring books. Watch If: If you are Canadian then you need to watch. Also, if your kids are into animation, comic books or any kind of superhero magical content they will enjoy this. My 19-year-old introduced me to this series and I love it. We are halfway through the second season. Do Not Watch: Not everyone is a superhero fan, so if there’s no way you can get into that kind of sci-fi then this might not be the Netflix series to watch with your teens. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina This recommendation comes from my daughter, Payton. Watch If: Perhaps you were a fan of Sabrina, Teenage Witch and your teen is relating to the witches and wizards escapist kind of content on Netflix. This will appeal to both of you. Do Not Watch: If you hated Sabrina, then you might not want to bother getting invested in this. Thank Goodness for Netflix! These are a few of our picks for great Netflix Series to Watch with teens right now. We are still finishing Umbrella Academy and we’ve only just begun Sabrina. Can’t wait to see where both of these series go next. Bring on the Popcorn Curling up during the pandemic and asking what Netflix series to watch next has been a common phenomenon here and in many homes. Watching occasional Netflix series with the kids has been one of my favourite things to do. We might not do this often, but when we do, we really just enjoy the time together. I Still Believe Opens This Week

When was the last time you saw a movie that truly moved you? I Still Believe, opening this week, is a powerful tale that will touch your heart. I am taking part in the I Still Believe Influencer activation with Graf-Martin Communications. I have been compensated and my opinion is all my own. I Still Believe in Faith and Romance From the makers of I Can Only Imagine comes the true life story of Jeremy Camp and his remarkable journey of love and loss that proves there is always hope in the midst of tragedy and that faith tested is the only faith worth having. Seventeen Magazine voted I Still Believe the most romantic movie of 2020. It’s easy to see why. The plot centres around a romance, but unlike a lot of romance movies it’s not a super saccharine movie. It is a life story and contains all the themes you’d imagine framed inside an exploration of the topic of faith. One love can change your life and sometimes change the world as well. I Still Believe is charming and uplifting and it carries notes of serious drama too. You might think that’s too many things, but life is filled with all of those emotional elements too. Recently, I had a chance to see an advanced screening of the movie. These are my thoughts: The Cast First of all this cast is amazing. Britt Robertson is an actress I’d watch in just about anything. She’s fresh and sweet and has a gentle commanding presence in every single role that she’s tackled to date. No exception here. The actress from Tomorrowland and A Dog’s Purpose commands the screen as the main character’s love interest. K.J. Apa of Riverdale holds his own and has a magnetic presence on screen. Camp’s parents are played by Shania Twain and Gary Sinise. Not going to lie…I kept hoping Shania would burst into song half way through the movie. Gary Sinise of Forest Gump and CSI:NY is excellent here as the Dad. Excellent casting in that he grounds the family and has the experience to pull this off. Plot (No Spoilers) K.J. Apa, who plays Camp, is driven to become independent at college, and is questioning his faith slightly, while also looking for someone who can display a physical embodiment of faith. When he starts working for a famous musician, he spies in the crowd Britt Robertson’s character who seems grounded in her faith. He yearns to experience that and strives to be closer to her to understand it. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that she is attractive and funny too. Camp’s brothers are sweet and comical. His younger brother has Down Syndrome, which adds an additional thread of morality begging the question why does God give us so many challenges if he is a kind and benevolent force? Favourite Moments Camp and his Dad have a brilliant scene where the son asks the Dad basically this question: How and why do you still have faith when it has been so sorely tested? I’m not about to give away any of the plot twists. But, be warned, this is an emotional ride. Look for the signs of faith at work inside the plot. They are inspiring and magical. I Still Believe is from directors Jon and Andrew Erwin and producer Kevin Downes. The cast is close to perfect. Grab your date and a tissue or two and watch the love story everyone will soon be talking about. I Still Believe is in theatres across Canada on March 13th. Time to Stop Smoking in Movies Now

I have partnered with YMC and Region of Peel and have received compensation for this post. All opinions are my own. Smoking in movies has been irksome to me for years. It’s so very unnecessary and irresponsible. I am a drama Mom. Both of my girls act and have for years with a local youth theatre troupe. It’s an amazing emotional outlet and youth development program. So I know all about character and plot devices and that smoking has traditionally been used as a character tool, but here’s the thing. It doesn’t have to be. I’ve seen many of the plays my kids act in altered ever so slightly to be more socially responsible, such as through losing old references to outdated and inappropriate language. Smoking in movies is like that to me. It’s outdated and socially inappropriate and even more, irresponsible. The older I get, the more I realize how juvenile using smoking in movies as a tool to convey coolness or rebellion or any of the other emotions attached to it really is. This holds especially true for me since I became a mom and even more relevant as a mom of teenage girls. I have two daughters aged 14 and 17. Right now, they’re fully coming into the age of independence and peer pressure. That’s a dangerous combination. Over the years, I’ve had several conversations with my daughters about smoking. We’ve talked about how dangerous it is. How unhealthy and disgusting it is. We’ve talked about what it can do to you and we have discussed all the people we know who have passed away from cancer. Then we also discussed what it does to your health and to your appearance and how addictive it can be as well as how hard it is to quit if you ever start. Smoking in Movies Perpetuates the Act My motto is honesty with my kids. When my younger daughter asked a few years ago: “Mom did you ever smoke?” I answered honestly with: “Yes, I did for seven years.” But I also often follow that with a discussion about research and science and I remind them knowing all that we know now compels us to do better and make healthier choices. Since having that conversation about smoking, I’ve used myself as a prime example of how ridiculous it is. I started smoking in my early teens. During my teens, movies and media portrayed smoking as being glamorous and a way to stay thin. As a teen girl I bought that hook, line and sinker. When I began working after school at a fast food restaurant, where many other employees smoked, it reinforced that it was okay for me to do so socially. I didn’t stop until I was around 23 or 24. So I smoked for about seven years before deciding to quit. Starting a new career and getting married convinced me it was time. So did a doctor I had at the time. The thing is even though I thought it was cool and relaxing in high school, quitting was anything but cool or easy. Smoking in Movies Needs to Go As a concerned mom, who knows all too well about how difficult it is to break away from smoking once you start, I’m proud to be partnering with YMC and Region of Peel- Public Health to bring awareness to their Smoke Free Movies campaign. The campaign asks parents to support the change by signing an e-petition that would require any new movies in Ontario, which contain tobacco imagery to be rated 18A, allowing parents to decide if their children are exposed to the act of smoking. I love this because evidence strongly suggests this is an effective method of protecting children and youth from exposure to onscreen smoking and is also an incentive for movie producers to remove smoking from their films altogether. That’s important because 86% of movies with smoking in them were rated for kids and teens in Ontario. On top of that, the more kids and teens are exposed to smoking in the movies, the more likely they are to start. Take a look at these statistics: An estimated 185,000 children in Ontario will start smoking due to their exposure to its onscreen use. Of those, 59,000 will die from tobacco related diseases. 37% of Ontario youth smokers are recruited to become smokers due to onscreen smoking. Those are two horrifying statistics for me as a Mom of two beautiful, healthy daughters. There’s no reason for smoking to appear in the movies anymore and if it does it needs to be restricted to those who are 18 plus. Schools work towards making sure kids know that smoking is not a healthy choice. Most parents do too of course. Now it’s time media started getting the message and accepting that they have a greater role in our culture too. Help Make Smoking in Movies a Thing of the Past Smoking is so easy to start, and it’s incredibly difficult to quit. Smoking is one of the most common activities that kids and teens are pressured into taking part in, and it comes at them from many sides. The last thing we need is a movie theater being the prime pusher of these incredibly addictive and deadly products. So What Can You Do? Movies influence kids. We need to make them smoke free. If I Could Tell You Movie #FertilityFilm

If I Could Tell You Movie takes the topic of infertility and explores the question of how far people are willing to go to realize their goal of pregnancy. As people talk openly about the topic of fertility and infertility, the taboo that was once simply accepted as reality is slowly being eroded and that’s a wonderful thing to see. If I Could Tell You Movie by the Clyde Brothers has a part in helping to illuminate the topic of infertility. This fertility movie that features a strong theme of infertility will make you think about where the line is and how far people are willing to go to try to conceive. Infertility is a deeply emotional topic matter and it’s good to see that reflected in current art and media more than ever before. If I Could Tell You Movie, takes an average middle aged couple who have hit the end of the road. Or so it would seem. Abby’s eggs are diminishing due to age and the length of time trying to get pregnant. Her husband’s sperm count is low. They are reaching the period of time where conception will no longer be possible, even with assisted reproduction. If I Could Tell You fertility film hits on where the end of the journey is and whether it’s possible to keep going even after you draw a line in the sand. At start of the movie we see Abby, heading off to a conference without her husband. The motivational speaker/guru she has gone to see, played by Sharon Lawrence, talks of miracles and making miracles happen. The topic is ironic for the perfectionist Abby who can do everything well, except get pregnant. She’s having trouble physically making miracles. As she is there at the conference she meets with an anonymous sperm donor and they discuss alternative methods for her to reach her desired outcome. He leaves her a deposit and outlines the services he provides. Some of this part seemed a bit over the top to me. The plot of this fertility film is exaggerated on purpose to highlight one extreme example of a woman who continues despite the decision as a married couple to cease trying. She has sought out anonymous sperm donation without telling her husband and plans to deceive him while pursuing her own course. I am not denying that couples push the boundaries often. I know a lot of people who have pursued all medical options available. I’ve also met many who have spent thousands undergoing IVF abroad as medical tourists. There are many people willing to do everything they can, sometimes at great risk to their own health. I haven’t met many who succeed by deceiving their partners. I think this angle of deception has a really dark tone. I don’t believe it to be rooted in reality but more like a dark satire of one woman’s infertility journey. Abby dramatically reveals her singleminded intention to a fellow conference goer. He is astonished that this underworld of sperm donors exists. “Is this a thing?” he asks. “Oh yeah. It’s a thing. It’s definitely a thing,” Abby replies. Three parts of the dialogue and plot line that I liked best were: The monologue Abby has as Derek is in her hotel room washroom leaving her a donation of his sperm in a sterile container. She at first has no interest in telling him anything about her life but then reveals she is married and with the door between them she can’t stop talking. She confesses the IUI’s and the IVF and the time they thought she got pregnant but after two weeks was informed the pregnancy wasn’t viable. Then she mentions how her friends tell her anecdotal stories of how they heard of someone who adopted and then got pregnant. Abby’s anger seeps out when she seethes: “I want to punch them in the face.” Also the secondary plot featuring a young woman struggling to accept the conference curriculum is realistic. On the last day when Abby is practically vibrating in her seat ready to volunteer her undying loyalty to the guru’s philosophy, the younger woman stands up and confesses that she has been struggling with a pregnancy and how she would reveal that to her boyfriend. Abby stands up and walks out of the conference. That spoke to me. That’s something every single person who has experienced infertility is familiar with. That slap in the face, punch in the guy moment you realize someone not even trying beat you to the end goal. The third part I enjoyed was the dialogue Abby has with the other conference goer she meets for drinks. She says something to the effect of I got my period at 12 years old. My Mother told me it was God’s promise I’d be a mother. God’s promise. She repeats that part. That’s a powerful statement that a strong undercurrent of reality. Many women struggling with infertility have had a couple decades of periods with little indication that anything medically could be wrong at all until suddenly they can’t get pregnant. Overall this is an interesting film. I think if you view it as a dark satire of sorts on the nature of crossing lines and boundaries and love, then the fertility film works. The Gift of Family Entertainment – Road to Avonlea Boxed Set #TMMGG2015

When this Road to Avonlea boxed gift set arrived well let’s just say it hit a vein that’s rich with nostalgia. As a kid I was really enamoured with the entire Anne of Green Gables series of books. I consumed each one happily and couldn’t wait for the next to arrive. Back then we bought our books at Coles Books. Chapters/ Indigo wasn’t even a hint in someone’s eye yet. Anne of Green Gables was actually one of the first books I bought my daughter as an infant, not long after we adopted her, and I set it aside as a keepsake for when she was old enough to read. It is an iconic Canadian book that gave way to a very successful TV series. It also has a great little adoption theme. When Road to Avonlea arrived on television, it was a charming sweet family favourite for seven seasons. Hours of family viewing together that you didn’t ever worry about needing to censor. I’m sure my Mom appreciated that because she was a busy working Mom who didn’t have a lot of spare time to waste. When we watched TV shows like Road to Avonlea we watched them together as a family and it was a great bonding experience. Road to Avonlea complete boxed set is seven seasons long. That spans the entire series and runs about $199 US. Road to Avonlea by Sullivan entertainment would make a great gift for an entire family, or for Grandma and Grandpa. Together they could watch the series slowly with their grandchildren. The Canadian Film and Television company Sullivan Entertainment has several great gift ideas including jewelry, books, perfume, DVDs and more. There are also some fantastic gift box sets like this one – and also Anne of Green Gables, The Wind at My Back and Anne of Green Gables animated series on the Shop At Sullivan site. Anne of Green Gables fans will love something special and unique and made in Canada from this site. I received this boxed set for consideration in my Thrifty Momma’s Tips gift guide. My opinion is all my own.

Inside Out Movie – Add This to Your Christmas List Now #TMMGG2015

Since my one daughter’s play ended, we’ve been getting back to family movie night here. That means we’ve had some enjoyable evenings snuggling together, watching highly amusing and sometimes really moving movies. One week ago we watched Max, which I highly recommend for anyone over 7 or 8. It was a great show about dogs used in war. This past weekend we watched Inside Out, which we all loved. Inside Out is a comical and really witty romp through one little girl’s mind. Do you ever wonder what’s going on in someone’s mind? Disney-Pixar’s “Inside Out” takes an exciting and hilarious journey into the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley to find the answer. Based in Headquarters, the control center of 11-year-old Riley’s mind, five emotions are hard at work, led by lighthearted optimist Joy. She strives to make sure Riley stays happy as she operates alongside fellow emotions Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. The story begins just as Riley, an only child, is about to move and the emotions inside her head are essentially turned inside out as her family relocates across country for her Dad’s job. The move doesn’t go as well as expected. Their new home isn’t up to their usual standards (they are greeted by a dead mouse in the corner of the main room) but, with all the emotions in headquarters Riley is able to overcome disgust and sadness and fear for a brief time until Sadness and Joy get lost in longterm memory. There are numerous lasting life lessons to be learned here from the emotions in this movie. Joy is a bit of a control freak always hoping to capture and build the best memories inside her little girl’s brain. Sadness is a bit of a downer, as is to be expected. But she’s also a tiny bit mischievous and can’t seem to control her impulsiveness. She begins to turn happy memories into sad ones just by touching them. Disgust is a bit comical and always on hand when some new situation arises to keep their girl safe. For instance broccoli. Their girl Riley isn’t eating broccoli on Disgust’s watch. Anger and Fear are also parts of Riley’s emotional world. Anger hasn’t really shown a lot of activity, until after the move, when the emotions run amok. Joy and Sadness together end up getting sucked into a tube that catapults them out of headquarters and eventually into longterm memory (which is a very challenging place to negotiate). Longterm memory is a bit like a maze and they find they need to work together better than they have been in order to save the day. In the mean time though while Joy and Sadness are missing from headquarters Fear, Disgust and Anger have to try to work together, but Fear, Disgust and Anger are pretty chaotic inside Riley’s head. Joy, voiced by Amy Poehler is hilarious and really enjoyable. Sadness is comical and made me laugh with a couple of adult level jokes. The plot is sweet and the heightened emotional activity in the story will resonate with all age groups really. The only thing I liked more than Inside Out movie was watching it with a teen and a tween, because who knows more emotional chaos than kids going through puberty? This emotional roller coaster ride of a movie really appealed to me as a mom of a teen and a tween who see, to have no control over their own emotional state sometimes. Now you can also experience Inside Out movie like never before on Disney Blu-ray! The movie is out now on Blu-Ray and DVD combo pack. Inside Out is a classic and a keeper. The Tomorrowland film is one of the best movies I’ve seen in quite some time. It’s also one of the last movies I watched at the theatre. That shows you how often I get out! Luckily if you are like me and rarely are able to get to the movie theatre now you can watch Tomorrowland at home. Tomorrowland is one of those movies that exudes everything that’s great about a family film. With a ton of action, adventure, and heart, the Tomorrowland film has something for everyone, from kids to adults. The Tomorrowland Film is Perfect for All Ages One of my favorite parts of the Tomorrowland film is the way it weaves different aspects of films into one overall family-friendly movie that has something for every member of the family. From the feeling of adventure that you get when Casey Newton begins to unravel the mystery of the city of Tomorrowland and how to get there to the action of trying to evade androids to the heart of watching Frank Walker find that part of him that he’d thought he’d lost, the Tomorrowland film is truly an instant classic that the whole family can enjoy. I’m not going into specifics, because I hate spoilers, but I will say that this movie has no shortage of mystery on top of all that action and adventure. There were points in the movie where I was on the edge of my seat, but there were also parts where I thought I might cry. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, you’ll know these parts when you see them. There’s a plot with the young actors in the film that is very moving. On top of the story and feel of the Tomorrowland film, the acting is also superb. Each and every actor delivered their characters in a real, believable way that’s hard for some actors to do in a fantasy film like Tomorrowland. I found myself relating to and believing in each and every character and why they did what they did. That’s a make or break for me, and the Tomorrowland film delivered. It’s not surprising with a cast like Britt Robertson, George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Tim McGraw, and Kathryn Hahn. The Tomorrowland Film is a Magical Mystery Tour de Force You might think this heading is a bit over the top, but I assure you it is not. The Tomorrowland film is one of those movies that’s so good, when it comes out on cable I’ll put it on loop. Seriously. It’s sweet and charming and out of this world with a strong message too. My kids enjoyed seeing this movie at the theatre and they will love having it here to watch as often as they wish. (Also it’s a great option to keep in the car for the DVD there) It’s been a long time since my family has been to a movie that we all genuinely thoroughly enjoyed together. I love the Tomorrowland film, and I think you will, too. If you don’t have it in your collection, make sure you get it. It’s outstanding and now available on BluRay and DVD. I am adding this to my gift guide this year because I also think it would be a great gift for the movie lover on your list. I received a copy of this movie for consideration here. This picture is a bit old now but these girls are more famous than ever I think. Famous Siblings You May Not Know It seems like we’re all obsessed with famous siblings. I know I am. Not sure why exactly, but I think it’s because it’s nice to see a family connection with celebrities. They feel more real, I think. We all know about Chloe and Kim, the Olsen twins, and the Jonas brothers, but here are some famous siblings and their lesser known siblings you might not know about. Famous Siblings and Their not so Famous Counterparts In these sibling pairs, only one has achieved true stardom. However, many of these brothers and sisters to stars are well on their way to making their own names in entertainment and other creative industries. Shailene and Tanner Woodley By now, Shailene Woodley is a household name. She made her first major mark on the industry with “The Fault in Our Stars” and sealed her stardom with the “Divergent” movies. Her brother, Tanner, may not have achieved super stardom yet, but he is quite an accomplished actor, with many roles in short films as well as “Boston Legal”. Zach, Adam, and Joshua Braff These famous siblings are all talented and two of them have even worked together. Zach Braff made his mark in “Scrubs”, moving from the popular comedy to movies. His brother, Adam, helped him write his most recent film “Wish I Was Here”. Their other brother, Joshua is also a published author. Nicole and Sofia Richie This is one stylish pair of famous siblings. Nicole Richie has already made a name for herself as a style icon, and her half-sister, Sofia, is well on her way to becoming just like her big sis. She’s already been featured in Teen Vogue and Elle. Dakota and Elle Fanning This could be the last time these two appear in any article about famous siblings and their lesser known brothers or sisters. Dakota and Elle have been acting since they were toddlers. Dakota has already made her mark on Hollywood, starring in over 30 films, including hits like “Man on Fire”, “War of the Worlds”, and the “Twilight” saga. Elle is following suit, recently starring in “Ginger & Rosa” and “Maleficent”. Penelope, Monica, and Eduardo Cruz We all know Penelope Cruz. This superstar has been in everything from “Captain Correli’s Mandolin” to “Vanilla Sky”. This superstar is actually part of a famous siblings trio, and they’re all quite accomplished. Penelope’s sister, Monica, is a Spanish actress and dancer, and she was even Penelope’s body double in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”. Penelope’s brother, Eduardo is an accomplished musician and has worked on scores for some of her films. He gained some unwanted stardom for his tumultuous relationship with Eva Longoria. Siblings to the Stars All of these famous siblings have some equally accomplished not so famous counterparts, but all of them show us that talent really does run in the family. I found it interesting that all of these famous siblings and their brothers or sisters are all accomplished in some creative field. It really is fun to see the family members behind the stars.

Inside Out is a smash hit at the theatres and reviews are rolling in fast. Not so surprisingly almost everyone I have heard from loved this adorable movie by Disney Pixar. Inside Out has given people of all ages a good chuckle this summer. It highlights the emotions battling inside a little girl, Riley’s head and body after she is forced to move with her family to San Francisco. Inside Out features some amazing voice actors such as Amy Poehler as Joy. Have you seen Inside Out Yet yet? It’s such a funny and well done movie about the complex topic of emotions.
