When I was a child I could spend hours upon hours reading. I consumed novels in the summer as if they were food and they kind of were. In summer as a child I had all the time in the world just to read. In school, I loved a good reading challenge too. Summer Slump This summer, when the kids are home you can encourage their love of reading with this cute little 1,000 Minute Reading Challenge. Don’t let summer slide or summer slump claim too many of the kid’s brain cells this year or any year. What are You Reading? What kinds of books are your kids interested in? Do they love reading as much as I do, as much as you do? During the pandemic I have been reading more than ever. I suspect many people have rediscovered a passion for novels. In fact, I kind of have my own reading challenge going on. One week last month I decided my books were a little bit stale, so I drove around town to the Little Free Library locations. While we might not be able to travel out of town, we can definitely travel through literature. Kids can do the same. Adult Reading Journals When I was in my twenties I kept lengthy reading journals. This one works too. CUTE Reading Journal for Book Lovers. I still have several of them. BOY, could I ever read pre-children, anyways. Get the 4-page Kids Reading Challenge Here: My 1,000 Word Reading Challenge Download this fun summer or homeschool literary challenge for kids or kids at heart via the link above. It’s a super cute 4 page printable. One page is a journal style entry to share all of your reads in and one page is cute little bookmarks. There’s a bee themed reading game and also a title page. Love the Bee Theme? Don’t Miss this cute Bee Life Cycle Learning Kit Printable too!

This Valentine’s Day has potential to be a downer. Pandemic holidays are a bit of a challenge that way. But, it could also just as easily be memorable depending on how you spin it with the kids this season. And depending on your own outlook. So, here are a few fun things to do this Valentine’s Day with kids. Oh and stick to the very end of the post for some sweet free Valentine’s cards that you can download easily now. Six Fun Ways to Enjoy Valentine’s Day with Kids this Year Baking or Cooking Together Make some scrumptious and simple cupcakes or chocolates for Valentine’s Day and the kids will enjoy them as much as you do. Or you could all work together on a special Valentine’s Day meal, because it’s not possible to go out to a restaurant during a pandemic. Consider making these Red Velvet cupcakes. Valentine’s Scavenger Hunt There are so many fun scavenger hunts here right now. Why not print out the Valentine’s Scavenger Hunt and schedule it in for the afternoon. That makes for a fun activity to do on Valentine’s Day with kids. Tobogganning I know we are all under stay at home orders, but many of you probably have a nearby school yard or park nearby. We have one in our neighbourhood. It isn’t very steep but it works when the snow falls. It is a great way to spend an hour or so with kids. In a typical year, we would be taking this weekend to go and ski at Blue Mountain in Collingwood probably. So, in the ongoing commitment to keep kids active and fit this also works. Wear a mask and go at an hour when it’s less busy. Avoid crowds, of course. Make and Share Valentine’s Cards Valentine’s Day used to be one of my favourite holidays at school. I loved everything about it, from making the adorable little Kleenex box card holders to gathering and reading them all. MY GOSH, I just realized that was like an early form of social media. LOL. Adding up all of the Valentines is a primitive version of gathering likes on Facebook, views on TikTok or Instagram. These sweet Valentine’s Day cards are charming and honestly why not just print them out and let the kids drop these off in neighbourhood mailboxes. Or they might put some in the mail for their friends, cousins, anyone in their circle. I think it’s a sweet way to maintain contact and send a bit of cheer right now. Make Valentine’s Crafts I have gathered a few cute crafts here over the years. There’s always this adorable Valentine’s Colouring Page Printable. You might enjoy that, plus it is simple to do. Or make your own Valentine’s Day coupon booklet. Here’s how ours turned out. You are welcome to share that and print it out too. Read Books About Love Depending on the ages of your kids, you might gather up some cute books about love. Check your library and order some now to get them via curbside pickup. Or, order a few from Amazon. Here are some of my favourites: Love You Forever – Robert Munsch The I Love You Book by – Todd Parr The Peace Book by Todd Parr – we have always been big fans of his writing because he is one of the authors who always took diversity into account. His books feature LGBTQ+ families, and adoptive families and single parents. I love that. In fact, I highly recommend any of his books. Cute Board Book – I Love You to The Moon and Back How to Get this Valentine’s Day with Kids Content and Free Cards Just click on the link below and the Valentine’s cards will download easily. Get Your Valentines Here: Pirate Valentine’s Printables Star Wars Valentine’s Unicorn Valentine’s Cards to Share Looking for more Valentine’s Day content? Check out my Valentine’s Day word search. It is pretty popular this time of year. Please remember to follow the health regulations in your area. Safety first. Finally Don’t Go Bacon My Heart. LOL. Happy Valentine’s Day!

What does Valentine’s Math look like? Well, one plus one equals two. Just kidding. Valentine’s Day Themed Addition and Subtraction Booklet I mean Valentine’s Math isn’t much different than any other math, but at the very least it’s a cute little opportunity to sell math practice to your kids. One of mine had zero interest in math for years, so sometimes that meant adding some manipulable toys or tools to help make it tangible, or real. Whatever works sometimes to get them through. I hope you each have a beautiful Valentine’s Day with your family. There sure is a lot to celebrate about February. Valentine’s Day, Family Day, and more. Plus, Heart Health Awareness Month, Black History Month and Chinese New Year. Valentine’s Day is just a fun day to show people you love them or to express to friends that you care. These days, those little reminders of love are more than welcome and necessary. The world benefits when we share joy and love and messages of hope. Check Out My Valentines too! FYI, I have some adorable Star Wars Valentine’s cards you might want to share this year. It sure is not the usual Valentine’s Day and boy am I ever getting tired of saying that, but it’s still a good chance to celebrate love and family. FYI, don’t miss this Valentine’s Day Colouring Page too. I hope you have a lovely time sharing a romantic dinner and I hope you get candy, and/ or flowers too. Anyways, this year I have an easy and thrifty gift for you to give someone special. As always this is family friendly, but also could be adults only if you wanted the booklet to be. It is three pages so be sure to print each page out. You can easily get my entire Valentine’s coupon booklet. Here’s How to Access This Cute Valentine’s Math Page Printable: Just download it to your computer and print off the pages.

Enjoy this wine word search this week when you have a spare moment. By now, you all know that word searches and word games make me happy as a clam. This stems from all the time that I spent in the hospital with Crohn’s disease as a kid. People would always bring gifts of crossword puzzle books and word search games. The Gift of Words Those were amazing ways to pass the time when sitting there in the hospital unable to get out, go shopping or even go to school. Those word games helped fill the hours. Of course, I also did a lot of writing while on the inside. LOL. Waiting for X-rays and treatments can be super tedious. So, I pretty much always had a word search booklet and a pencil with me. These days, I do a lot less of that kind of thing because I am busy writing and running a business (shameless plug for Thrifty Mom Media content creation here….inkscrblr@rogers.com for more information.) When I am not working, I enjoy skiing and also exploring new recipes and new wine pairings too. I have a lot to learn about wine and wine pairings, so I continue to search for that information and read what I can to help build that knowledge. Wine For the Win Wine is a topic that I am always interested in learning more about. It’s a current passion. Sometimes I feel like I wish I had a pocket win expert on hand routinely when I travel. While we have not been travelling, many of us have been appreciating wine during the pandemic, occasionally while also watching Hallmark Christmas movies. LOL. So, I figured that a wine word search was fitting. Don’t Miss How to Print This Word Search To Get this cute wine word search just click download below. If you use this, please come back and let me know. What’s your favourite: red or white?

This End of Year Journal Activity booklet is pitch perfect for kids at this time of the year. It serves several purposes. An End of Year Journal can prompt kids to get writing and thinking about the past year. But, to be honest, I love it equally for the fact that a simple journaling activity can also make gratitude real. Gratitude Exercises Even in a year when there didn’t seem like there was much to be grateful for, something can always be found. I believe that and it’s something I am trying to convey to my kids and my readers regularly. I wrote about gratitude way back when at the start of the pandemic. Here’s what that looked like then, for me. Favourite Things in 2020 This easy activity can remind your kids that there are simple things to remember and treasure even during the pandemic. A favourite book, song or TV show. Maybe just a different food. In my home, this year, one of our favourite things to do has been baking. We have definitely done a whole lot of bread making and we’ve made a lot of bread machine recipes. (Check out this glazed apple bread recipe.) Our favourite small appliance still is the bread maker. Gather up a few supplies and print this out and give it to them to do on their own. As a child, this is the kind of thing that would have appealed to me. I loved writing and journalling and diaries too. All of the writing and reading and the language related activities were my favourite diversions. Look how that worked out. LOL Free Games and Printables Remember to visit my free printables board if you need help looking for free activities for your kids to do. For a high quality print out of the life cycle content do not miss this downloadable Bee Life Cycle activity and you should be off to the races. To Use This Activity In Order to Access this and Download it Just Click on the link below. What are you grateful for this year?

When I was a child, I was frog crazy. I don’t know what it was about frogs to tell you the truth. But, perhaps it’s the frog life cycle that was part of the appeal. As a student in elementary school, I used to always opt in to do the assignments featuring tadpoles and frogs. I still remember going to a swamp to gather a few tadpoles for a social sciences project in grade five or six, I think. Tadpoles were always plentiful in swamps and ponds in Guelph It was always fascinating to watch those tadpoles sprout little legs and become full fledged frogs. Kind of miraculous to watch that force of nature transform something that looked like a fish into those squirmy little hoppers. Anyways, I figured that since everyone has more time on their hands and we are all looking for ways to keep our kids busy, you might want to use the frog life cycle booklet to help. There are several resources here that you can use at this time When I was very small I was a little bit of a Tom boy and I loved catching frogs. I kept one as a pet in a small backyard cage outside back before we ever had a cat. To Print this out and use it click on the link below. Don’t forget to check out all the other educational resources I have here on the site for kids and parents too. There’s a New Bee Life Cycle Booklet here as well. This Earth Day share both with the kids. Also, if you love to bake, then do make these fun Earth Day cupcakes.
