Have it all. This year Food Basics wants you to have it all. They recognize that customers are the reason they exist, and want to celebrate us every time we step into the store. They do that by making sure they have everything we need, including fresh products that are always in stock at the best prices. So we CAN have it all. Have it all with the I Want It All Event There’s a lot to be thankful for this year. It’s Canada’s 150th birthday! If you’re like me, a bash is imminent, so you need a few things. Save on all the food and household things by shopping at Food Basics first, then you can spend the rest of your money on party supplies, and maybe even a road trip to some iconic Canadian destination! I am very excited to share the return of the I Want It All event. The I Want It All event is back at Food Basics, and it’s bigger than ever. This year, to coincide with Canada’s 150th birthday, Food Basics wants to reward us with even more than they have before. From June 8th to July 5th, customers will have a chance to win 150% of their receipt. That’s right – groceries are covered and there’s a bit left over so you can buy something extra for yourself. Customers all across Ontario can enter for a chance to have their receipt reimbursed with an additional 50% of the receipt back on top of that! Every Monday through Friday throughout the event, draws will be made. Winners will receive a Food Basics gift card for the full amount of their purchase and a cheque in the mail for an additional 50% of their receipt. As an added bonus, select Facebook fans who answered the question: “How would you have it all?” on the Food Basics Facebook page will have their wishes rewarded this summer. At Food Basics you can shop smart with fresh, always in-stock products at great prices. I mentioned last year how Food Basics fits our lifestyle here. We used to live a five to ten minute drive from a Food Basics in east London. When my kids were small and we were very dependent on one income we shopped there every week. That was instrumental in helping us stay on budget. Listen, even though we are now better off than we were then, I still love saving. To enter for a chance to win 150% off, customers can upload an image of their receipt at FoodBasics. Each receipt will act as an official entry, and will remain in the draw until the end of the program – or, hopefully, until the moment that customer wins 150 per cent off! For additional chances to win, shoppers are encouraged to sign up for Food Basics’ weekly e-newsletter. Winners will be drawn every weekday throughout the duration of the program, and announced on the grocery chain’s website and Facebook page. Have it all with Food Basics and The I Want it All Event Food Basics is the name we all know and trust because we know they’ll take care of us. When we visit our local Food Basics, we know we’re going to get great products that are fresh, in stock, and at the best prices. They want us to have it all every day, and have even more with the I Want It All Event. So head over to Food Basics to have it all every day, and win even more from June 8th to July 5th. This content has been sponsored and as such I am compensated. My opinion is all my own and it is also truthful.

Hold up Facebook sales groups. Here comes Varage Sale now in London, Ontario too. Varage Sale takes the headache out of garage sales and helps you to sell the little extras that are cluttering up your home. I have been eyeing this up for several weeks as I watched Varage launch in communities around the GTA. I even downloaded the Varage Sale app before they launched in London. I am a bit of an app geek and love to see what new apps are doing and how they compare to other tools. I watched Varage Sale in Ottawa and in the GTA and I even messaged the app to say – “hey London, next please!” Finally Varage Sale is here for London too! Just in time, because I have been trying to sell several things on other competing sites and I’m not getting anywhere with the old tools I typically use. So Varage Sale to the rescue. [tweetthis]Hey #ldnont what will you sell on Varage Sale? https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/varagesale/id622859960?ls=1&mt=8[/tweetthis] Varage Sale is easy to use. It is app based and it’s a safe way to sell your old clothing, toys, furniture or books. You start with an app on your smartphone or handheld device and then locate the community you are in and ask to join. The request to join the Varage Sale community in your neighbourhood is met with a speedy response. I noted that my request to join the new London community was answered the same day, Then you start listing. It’s very user friendly. I’ve listed a couple of items there already, including a bookcase I’ve been wanting to pass on for a few months now and a small sofa. I still have one or two items left from my Mom’s home that I am trying to sell on Varage Sale. I have high hopes for this app. I like the simplicity of the app itself. I also like having alternatives. I have been using Facebook groups to TRY and sell items here locally and I have had no luck. I also have used a couple of competing apps for selling old items. When we moved to our new home several things no longer went with the style of our home and the space inside. My vision for this house doesn’t include the old bookcase we have had since I was in university. It also doesn’t include the small table that used to be in my Mom’s kitchen and frankly I have a few kid’s toys the girls have outgrown. So I am listing these things there. When I get the kids back to school then I will start selling even more things on Varage Sale. Oh and you can buy things there too. It’s a safe app for people buying and selling things they can’t use any longer. One other thing – you can bump your items a few times as needed. There is no cost to do that. I tried it today. As a seller I like that feature. All items are marked as available or sold or sale pending. What will you list on Varage Sale? By the way there’s a twitter party this week for Varage Sale. Don’t forget to RSVP and join Wednesday night. You can RSVP for that here on Tammy’s site: http://inrdream.com/2015/08/varage-sale-decluttering-twitter-party/ And right now one thing I also love about Varage Sale is that they are donating 30,000 books to kids in need across Ontario. Right now up until August 21st each Varage Sale community that adds 1500 new users will unlock $2500 in funding through First Book Canada. That’s 600 books in each city, or 30,000 books across Ontario. Download the app for Apple devices here now: Varage Sale. (For iOS 7.0 or higher) Also downloadable through Google Play. This is a promotional post sponsored by Varage Sale. My opinion is all my own and it is always 100 % honest. If you have an app you want considered for this space, or if you need an influencer program built for your app email inkscrblr@rogers.com

Target Canada made headlines across the country this week announcing they will close all 133 Canadian stores opened under two years ago. Target trended on Twitter all week, but this time it wasn’t for a twitter party or a social media marketing event. It was bad news for many. I interviewed retail expert John Winter of John Winter and Associates today on what went wrong. I used to talk with John Winter often when I wrote daily news columns for business sections of the news. I still remember interviewing him when Walmart set up shop in Canada in the 90s. That was a massive retail shift for Canadian retail. Target appeared to be set to change the landscape again. But the difference between the two couldn’t have been more dramatic. This is what he had to say about Target Canada closing. TMM( Thrifty Mom Media): 1. “Target leaving Canada” read every headline this week. This is a big blow to Canada and it will leave a lot of empty stores. Why do you think Target didn’t succeed in Canada? John Winter: “They were incompetent. They bought Zellers old locations in second and third rate locations. You can’t overcome location. One of their first stores was Thorncliffe Park in Toronto. That was not a good market. Stores such as the one in Aurora were a much better market. They opened too many stores too early. Their shelves were never full. They had a distribution problem. Their distribution centre was in Cornwall near that of Shoppers Drug Mart and WalMart. The distribution problem did not make sense. It was incompetency.” TMM (Thrifty Mom Media): 2. Target, Mexx, Sears…and apparently several others are being watched closely…this past year has seen a lot of retail ups and downs. Why are so many seemingly popular big name retailers going out of business? John Winter: “We still haven’t recovered from the recession in 2008. Per capita expenditure has not risen to where it was prior to 2008. The Boomers we were depending on in the 1970s, 80s and 90s are all retired or retiring. Their incomes is now cut in half. They are not spending what they used to.” TMM: 3. What will the rest of 2015 hold for retail? Should we expect more bankruptcies and retail closures? John Winter: “The Department store industry is in terrible disarray. There are other stores that are not in good shape. The Bay for instance. The only stores doing well are Walmart and Costco. In 1994 Walmart set up and paid a fraction of what Target spent. Walmart prices are the lowest. They renovated at night. They restocked at night. They never inconvenienced customers that way. It was unheard of in Canadian retail. Target aggravated customers. They chose the wrong locations and they were heavily in debt. They should never have opened that many stores. They should have opened 50.” TMM: 4. I am reading a lot about the failure of middle class retail and the fact that nobody wants to shop middle class retail anymore. What is your take on that? John Winter: “Not true. The middle class shop at Walmart and Costco as do the Baby Boomers who have much less income than they did before retirement. Walmart and Costco offer value to consumers that need value. Middle class retail is Costco and Walmart. I think we will see an increase in upscale retailers. The average consumer is not high fashion. Nordstrom’s might do well and retailers that are high end will be fine if they open two stores not 220.” TMM: 5. Will the empty spaces in our malls be filled fast? Remain empty? What do you think? John Winter: “They will fill the spaces. Smaller retailers will snap up the spaces that are vacant as long as developers divide them. Don’t worry about the developers. They will do fine. Those spaces will fill up. The employees and the jobs that are lost are the real tragedy.” Thanks very much to John Winter for talking to Thrifty Momma’s Tips. Target Canada issued a release this week. They indicated they will not declare bankruptcy, but could not make a profit in Canada until 2021. For more about that click here: http://www.abullseyeview.com/2015/01/qa-brian-cornell-target-exits-canada/ Brian Cornell, Target’s Chairman and CEO, told the public this week: “Target Canada business had reached the point where, without additional funding, it could not continue to meet its liabilities. Simply put, we were losing money every day. After consulting with many leading third parties and carefully weighing the realities of the situation facing us in Canada, we decided that Target Canada would file for what is known in Canada as the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA). It was the best option available to enable us to wind down our operations in Canada in a fair and orderly way.”

The shopping experience can turn a loyal shopper off if the return policy is hard to negotiate Almost every customer has returned a purchased product for a store credit, exchange or refund at least once in their lifetime. The experience is often remarkably routine. However, sometimes returns do not transpire the way they should. Let’s face it we all have a return story that made us feel undervalued as a customer. An experience shopping at even a beloved regular store can make you reconsider where you spend your money if the chain ends up having not so customer friendly return policies. Customers will be more likely to shop in retail stores offering seamless, no questions asked return policies. For obvious reasons, practicing good customer service will enhance your bottom line. However, good customer service during the return experience is a test retailers often fail. When this occurs, customers feel deceived and their loyalty to your brand diminishes greatly. This breaking of trust can undo the retailer-customer relationship forever. Examples of Best Brand Return Policies Nike offers one of the best return policies. Put yourself in their customer’s shoes for a moment. If one of their most popular products, the FuelBand, breaks, you can visit any Nike store. You will be promptly greeted by a friendly sales person with iPad in hand. They will immediately scan your FuelBand so your customer profile and proof of purchase will come up on their point of sale system. No paper receipt is necessary; everything they need to know about your purchase is already electronically linked to the product being returned. After all, when you made your initial purchase, they asked if you would prefer an electronic receipt to be emailed to you and you said yes. Within minutes, the product is replaced, and you are walking out of the store a very happy and satisfied customer. No forms. No questions asked. No demands for the original paper receipt. You leave the store with a feeling of mutual trust, and are determined to repay the favor by being a forever customer of Nike. Costco also offers an excellent return policy. Did you know if you are not satisfied even with a half-eaten, perishable product such as lettuce, you can return it, no questions asked? It would make sense to assume most customers would never take advantage of this policy using perishable items. But while some do, the average customer assumes a more conservative approach by only returning nonperishable items and consumer goods which are either defective or they are not satisfied with. Costco customers leave the store with cash in hand after a return has transpired. They are left with a feeling of mutual trust. Customer loyalty is being hardwired because of the customer friendly policy in the purchase-return-refund cycle. Returns and Refunds: The Law Most retailers are lenient with their return policies if a customer changes their mind or receives a gift they do not want. Why? Because it makes good business sense. However, you are not mandated to honor a return request unless if there an clear defect with the product covered by an implied warranty. You must abide by laws governing the communication of refund and return policies. The law is on the side of your customer. If you do not abide by your advertised and written store return policy, your customer can contact the consumer protection division of their local district attorney’s office or file a complaint with the Attorney General’s office. Beware of Return Fraud Customers can defraud a retailer when returning a product in many ways. U.S. Retailers lose between $9.6 billion and $14.8 billion annually from return fraud, according to the National Retail Federation and the Loss Prevention Research Council, as reported by Find Law. Examples of fraud include when a customer buys items for one-time use and then returns them, items are returned at the same store they were stolen at, found or stolen receipts are altered to show a higher price in order to make a profit, and price switching in which a higher-priced tag is placed on a product to receive a higher refund. An investment should be made to make your customer return experience seamless and hassle free and to protect your business from return fraud. Invest in the security of your store with hidden non-invasive surveillance video equipment and other security measures. Also, investigate mobile cloud-based point of sale hardware and software for your retail store. Shopify offers everything you need to sell in store including a credit card processing terminal with an encrypted card reader to safely store your customer information. If in the future, they come in to return an item, their credit card will be on file and the ease of the return will be simplified. It is also important to consider your price adjustment policy. Top retailers that abide by this policy give their customers the opportunity to have the difference in price credited to their credit card if the price of an item they purchase drops. Also, some credit card companies offer price protection for their clients who register purchases. While you may not want to publicize your price adjustment policy, have one in place and educate your sales staff to be prepared to handle such customer inquiries. Overall, customers will be more likely to shop in retail stores that offer seamless and no questions asked return policies. For obvious reasons, practicing good customer service and customer friendly return policies will enhance your bottom line and build consumer trust and confidence in your brand.
