How to Save on Grad Dresses and Prom Dresses

Is it possible to save money on grad dresses or prom dresses? Absolutely. No need to break the bank just because it’s graduation time or prom time. Hard to believe, but my youngest is graduating grade eight in June. Which as we all know means shopping and potential to ruin the budget. But shopping for prom dresses and grad dresses doesn’t need to break the bank. Here’s how we saved money on grade 8 grad dresses for both of our girls. I’ve been a bargain hunter most of my life. It’s extremely rare for me to pay full price on major purchases. Negotiation is actually something I’m good at. For years we had to be super strict about our purchases and budget so old habits die hard as they say. Why would grad dresses or prom dresses be any different? Three times now we’ve been in the position of shopping for grade 8 grad dresses, prom and semi-formal dresses. Two daughters and three dresses. One is in high school and there are more opportunities to go to fancy dances when you’re in high school. But every single time we’ve managed to save. In fact, those three dresses have cost us under $200 all together. FYI, if your child is graduating grade eight here’s a post about preparing them for the high school transition. Wait, what? How can that be? Well as I mentioned I’m a bargain shopper. With a few easy tips you can survive and thrive with teenage daughters who need dresses for fancy occasions. Here’s how we saved and looked fabulous as well. Four easy ways to save on grad dresses and prom dresses: 1. Buy gently used. When my older daughter was graduating from grade 8 I told her she could have any dress she liked that fit. I gave her wide-open budget at that time because I wanted her to feel good about what she was wearing and I felt generous to be honest. But my oldest daughter isn’t really a huge fan of shopping and she found a dress at Goodwill surprisingly I loved it. Her floor length turquoise dress was $17.50. 2. Borrow a dress A couple of years later my oldest daughter and a good friend were dating and they had to go to a semi formal at school that was 20s themed. This time she came home with a dress she had borrowed from a friend. It was a perfect fit and looked amazing on her. 3. Shop where savings abound This year my youngest daughter is graduating from grade 8. Soon she will go away with the class on a 3 day grade eight graduation trip. She’s excited about that. We went through a period of time where she wanted to wear jeans to her graduation and I mostly laughed about that, but eventually she started to get a bit anxious because everybody else was shopping, or had their outfits already. So on the weekend I decided to pause and take her into Winners. She tried on three dresses and fell in love with a long black fitted floor length gown. The dress has a peek-a-boo cutout in back. To be honest, even though it was only the third or fourth dress we’ve tried on in this entire process she fell in love with it and the price was so good that we ended up buying it. Grand total $75. Now this dress needs to be hemmed. And we need a special bra because of the cut out back and I will buy a lovely age appropriate pair of heels. But it’s perfect. Again I could’ve gone higher on the dress and been comfortable with that but she found what she loved and we are both extremely happy with it. 4. Rent a gown There are many services now also where you can rent a grad dress or prom dress. I am totally for it if it saves money, and reusing dresses is not a bad idea in my opinion. Buying things that you only wear once doesn’t sit well with me ever. So here’s to saving money on grad dresses and prom dresses. I’d much rather have cash to spend on a cottage rental or a fun vacation getaway every year than a closet full of dresses my daughters have only worn once. Svelte Women’s Body Shaping Clothing

To be quite honest I rarely give much thought to women’s body shaping clothing. I do give consideration to clothing that looks good and feels good. Price and quality is also important. Everyone occasionally needs or wants a bit more support from their clothing. But you really don’t want to sacrifice style for a little extra lift or support. Right? Now I am not really a subscriber to the theory that women need to hide their curves or their imperfections at all. But you do what works for you and everyone is different. Terms like muffin top kind of annoy me. If you are fit and healthy and living your life in a manner you are proud of then embrace it and own it. And if you feel better wearing women’s body shaping clothing then do that. The spring and summer months are upon us in Canada. That means I need a few new clothing pieces. Spring and summer often herald media trips and blogging conferences and the occasional event in Toronto. So, I need a few reliable outfits for every single season. Neutrals are useful and can be effortlessly paired with other pieces. Svelte has several simple pieces in both tops and bottoms that you can dress up or down as needed. Leggings can be versatile, but you have to be cautious with them. If leggings are done wrong they just look like you are wearing workout gear all day long. But when they are created with a bit of an eye to fashion leggings can help you build a casual dressy look that comfortably carries you through the day. My waist is not the same proportion as my hips and thighs. Hiking pants up all day long is annoying and it looks like you are a kid or a child with ill fitting clothing. Unprofessional. My older daughter is taking a big trip in 2017 with a youth theatre group she belongs to. This Christmas we’ve tailored a few of her presents so that she can use them when she travels. Frankly I love stripes. They look fresh, which works well in the spring. I have to feel confident to wear stripes or they don’t work. Bomber jackets: You know the ones I mean. Or deconstructed floral – almost a bit over the top or floral with an edge – like on a dress with a rough cut edge or asymmetry somewhere in the pattern. This is a bit of a carry over from the winter season when floral was also in. Romantic ruffles, ruffles, feathers, bows and frills. Jord Wood Watches Are as Unique as He is #jordwatch

June is the busiest month around here. Oh sure there’s school finishing up and the many end of year field trips and events to tend to. Then there’s my husband’s birthday, followed by our anniversary and Father’s Day. Shortly after Father’s Day, there’s Canada Day and then my one daughter’s birthday July 2nd. Finally my birthday follows the week after. WHEW! It’s easy to feel like we are eating cake all spring and summer. Not complaining, because I love cake as much as anyone else BUT there’s such a thing as too much of a good thing. This time of year, because of all the occasions we have going on, I need a host of great gift ideas at the ready. Unique gift ideas that appeal to men. It’s easy to run out of clever ideas sometimes. This year I think I hit the jackpot when I found Jord Wood Watches. I knew my husband didn’t have a reliable watch. Our old watches both died a couple of years ago. We have been using our iPhones mostly to tell time. But, it is nice to have a watch for dressy occasions, and even just because occasionally you feel like your arm needs a little something extra. So thankful to have found Jord this year. Jord Wood Watches are 100 % unique, just like my husband. My husband is a martial artist, a sporty, busy Dad, and he’s also a wood worker. SO, in the course of his regular day he spends a lot of time working with wood and turning it into something beautiful. He knows good quality wood. I surprised him with the Delmar Jord wood watch for his birthday (which would also make an excellent Father’s Day gift if you are still looking.) I chose the Delmar with a green face because I thought it suited Jim the most. The Delmar style watch looks classic and also slightly sporty to me also. All Jord wood watches are sustainable, simple and stylish. They were made to fill a unique gap for modern timepieces. My husband was initially surprised at how interesting the Delmar was. Although he works with wood he had never seen anything quite like this before. The wood grain here is really quite lovely and the watches are high quality. My only note about these pieces is this: when measuring your wrist for a Jord wood watch measure carefully and accurately. There isn’t much room for error here. A stylish watch needs to fit well too and these will, as long as you follow the instructions provided. The Dover series is also stunning. I like that you can dress these watches up or down with a simple change of wardrobe. The Delmar carries on from a day entertaining at home to a night out on the town to celebrate, and it even appears sporty enough to travel with you on your next big adventure. This watch would have been perfect on the cruise we took earlier this year. I received a Jord wood watch to help with this review. My opinion is all my own.
