What are your plans and goals this year? Lately, my daughters and some of my friends have been talking about plans for 2020, the year of clarity. 2020 vision equals clarity. Get it? I really like that metaphor for the new year and the new decade. Perhaps, this decade will be one of clarity. One daughter has a goal to drink more water and frankly that’s clearly a goal I am all about. I think that’s a great ongoing goal for me, but I am already doing well there, so it’s not really my resolution. That same daughter, who has anxiety disorder, has a goal to be less hard on herself. I love that she’s given this some serious thought. My Year of Clarity Was Slow to Start January is inevitably a time for fresh starts, new beginnings and more. This year, the weather has been a hot mess, so my goal of skiing ALL THE DAYS, has been put on hold. Of course, that is just a hopeful sort of goal that I can work towards, but not control because of weather and other obligations and even health. It’s more like a dream than a goal and I will work on making it happen, because I love to ski. By the time you read this, we will all be used to a new year and a new decade. Hopefully, all of the Christmas decorations and presents are put away by now. I confess it took us until this past weekend to get everything away. So much for being super organized and clean slates. But, if I am taking a page out of my daughter’s book this year, then I need to also go a bit easier on myself and simply accept that we got busy. Better late than never is my family philosophy often. Clarity Has Been Slow in Coming This Year Some years it takes me longer than others to arrive at a word of the year. In fact, I kind of wait for a word to make sense for me and this year it didn’t until this past week. This year, the clarity has been slow. Maybe New Year’s resolutions are more your cup of tea. Maybe, like me, you choose a ‘Word of the Year’ to guide your vision or philosophical approach to the months ahead. Last year my ‘Word of the Year’ was Reach as in Stretch and work towards building new business relationships and streams of income. My 2019 Goals In 2019, I set a goal of getting more bylines in traditional magazines again, in addition to the online content and social media consulting business plus content marketing business, because diversifying was part of my vision and it was how I interpreted Reach. So, I did. That was a SMART goal for me that worked. You know SMART goals, right? Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. Bylines and pitching outlets seems time consuming, but it is necessary in my business. This is an area where I do have clarity and positivity. My Past Words of the Year Grow and Travel are words I have chosen in other years. A couple of years ago MOVE was the word and I committed to that, going to the gym 5 days a week and skiing or swimming all the days possible. This has worked for me every single year, except for that one year when I chose Mindfulness. Turns out being mindful on a daily basis IS extremely challenging. I might need to revisit that one at some point, but definitely not this year. In 2020, my word of the year is Positivity and Clarity. Clarity is focus despite the other events and details that threaten to cloud your vision. I choose clarity and positivity. Will 2020 be Your Year of Clarity? Being positive when the world around you is negative is a strength and an art. I struggle at times, but I am a silver lining kind of person. There has to be a reason, or something positive, about every situation. That’s not being Pollyanna at all. It’s more about strength and survival and being able to carry on when the world seems to be uncaring, or indifferent, or hard. So, this year I am actively choosing positivity, even when health care and schools are failing my special needs child, when my email inbox is filled with terrible belligerent offers asking me to write for free I will work to stay positive while telling them what they are doing wrong. When my teens are being a big pain in the butt with their teenage mood swings and occasional inability to see other people’s viewpoints, I will also be positive, because it is a phase. And most especially, when I feel overwhelmed by bills that can’t be paid fast enough. Positivity. What do you believe in or measure every year? Is there a moment at the start of the year where you say to yourself: This year I resolve to read more? Or This Year I Will Drink More Water? Word of the Year or Resolution? Whatever your thing – Word of the Year, Vision Board, Resolution – when the intention is about self improvement and even sometimes making the world a better place, then I am all about that. I wish you success and clarity this year and this decade ahead.

What’s your word of the year? Every year for the last 6 years in a row I have chosen a word or phrase to guide my personal and professional attitude for the year. This has often been a really positive proactive experience for me. The year I chose Grow, I grew. The year I chose productivity I was productive. And so on. My word of the year is my philosophy or vision. I was astonished actually when I went back through my files this week and discovered I have been doing this for longer than I thought. In fact, I have chosen to do this since 2012. My first ever word of the year was productive. Chuckled a bit when I read back through that post about why I reject New Year’s resolutions and the many reasons a word works better for me. In 2013 Health was my word of the year and I worked towards building better health all year – which is a goal every year actually. What a fun thing it is to write here in this space every day five days a week for a year every year. This is my space to vent and explore and celebrate. Which reminds me of the year I chose celebrate as my word of the year. Over the course of 9 years here I have grown a family, lost a few relatives to cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease. Together my family has tackled childhood anxiety and bullies, special needs, FASD, Crohn’s Disease of course and so many transitions. We have grieved, celebrated, loved and lost and it is truly awesome to be able to see all these things reflected here in photos and words. In 2017 I traveled many amazing places including Ireland and I went to Space Camp in Huntsville and I grew and I built a wonderful year…and along the way I learned a few things too. My word of the year that I chose for 2017 was Mindfulness and I can tell you this was not my finest word of the year. Mindfulness is much much harder than I imagined. It began strong and fell hard around March. A year of living mindfully was not what I imagined and perhaps I need to try again. Because it was only a few months of mindfulness and it left me feeling a bit disappointed that I couldn’t make that one stick. Definitely, I have to practice this one regularly to get there. For 2018 I am choosing a very simple word to guide my actions and decisions. Move. My Word of the Year is Move. Move Forward of course, and not back. Move whether travelling or exercising or planning a year of business goals. This year I will move with purpose. And I will move more often. In fact I will move when traveling and there will be a good deal of travel in 2018 too. When I ski I am moving. When I choose a new business project or partnership I am moving. The year 2018 could be about the word NO. But again I decided that was too negative. Oh this year I will say No to more things that are not right and I will push back with a No when the rates and terms are ones I am not comfortable with. No is a fine word, but it should not be a year long philosophy. The negativity there is too harsh and black and I need light and uplifting to support my health and business. My Yes’s will be tempered with many No’s. [clickToTweet tweet=”What’s your word of the year for 2018?” quote=”What’s your word of the year for 2018?”] But for me….for my family…my business and my health I choose Move as my word of the year for 2018. Move every single day. Move more and move forward. Travel more and Move with motivation towards that goal. Ski more and swim more and work out more. This year I celebrate being able to move with strength and precision and balance through all the various fitness classes and workouts I tackle. In the business domain the word move is active and confident and for me it seems like a word that embraces knowing when to pivot or change or grow. Move upwards, onwards and forwards. In the world of social media marketing you can’t stand still. Nor can you do that in life, because it will pass you by. Keep moving and Happy New Year! What’s your word of the year?

There’s nothing like Halloween to bring out the kid in all of us. This time of year I enjoy decorating the house and making it look a little bit like a haunted house. And this funny little Drop ‘N Greet Bertie the Bat Hallmark gift Bat that makes noise any time someone approaches my house. Well, that tickles my funny bone.

If your children are about to start school, or are working towards entering grade one soon then this post is for you. Sight words are the most frequently printed and written words in the English language. They are generally simple words, ranging from Little to TO, to Down, THE, and of course AND. There are several of these sight words and the sooner children grasp and recognize them the easier it is to read. I think I mentioned this before here once or twice. My younger child had some trouble figuring out reading. The decoding didn’t come easy for them and the processing part just made them frustrated. That was a big shock for me, a person who makes her living writing. My oldest daughter read early and loved books immediately. So words were easy for her. I had little experience with reading challenges before parenting my younger child. Page 1 above Sight words have very little meaning on their own but they add to many stories and texts. Some sight words don’t make a lot of sense phonetically and a few can’t really be sounded out, so these are the words that kids should know by sight. They are high frequency words in the English language. This is a list of sight words that your child should recognize and know well by the end of grade one. It is not a comprehensive list of all 100 but it hits about half of the ones that should be understood before entering grade two. With my youngest daughter Ainsley we tried a lot of things to help. Flash cards, printables, reading repetitively. She was also a super busy child so I would walk around the house sometimes just reading out loud to her. She found it hard to sit still. And of course we did all the things that we did with Payton. But Payton looked at words and absorbed them. Eventually we figured out that my youngest kiddo seemed to require more time and more repetition for reading. Thankfully, now they have an IEP (individual education plan ) to help access the curriculum at school. How to Download These: SightWordsPDF COMPLETE There are a couple of different ways to download this list of sight words. I recommend clicking on the PDF Sight Word Link above and then you can print the entire set out quickly. Tools like this printable set of sight words written clearly and practiced over time helped. Does your little one love reading or have some trouble figuring out how to put the sounds and words together? READING is a Skill For Life: The best way to help them learn to read is to set and read with them often. Also model reading yourself because that helps too. Then you might cut these words out and categorize them according to letters and make a game of reading them. OR, you could make this into your own bingo game. Every time your child reads one he or she could locate on the sheet and put a checker on it. Post may contain affiliate links as a service to readers. Purchases made via qualifying links may mean a small commission for me. Here are a few books we loved when the kids were young. Some Favourite Reads The Kissing Hand Love You Forever Grandma Loves You Happy Reading!

Once back to school is a routine again and the temperatures begin to level out just a bit, then it’s time to get planning Thanksgiving here in Canada. Our Thanksgiving, as some of you know, is much earlier than it is in the United States. So, we have a longer shopping season. We also get a lovely little long weekend break right in October. That’s kind of a lovely time of year for it. The kids can often still play outside and the adults can cook in peace – mostly. [tweetthis]Enjoy this free kids Thanksgiving Fill In vocabulary sheet via @inkscrblr[/tweetthis] I often like to share free printables here and I have a helper who builds really cute coloring sheets and printable word searches and games. So use this free Thanksgiving printables fill in worksheet however you see fit. And don’t forget to come back soon because I have several more coming for Halloween too. I know at our house the kids are sometimes climbing the walls when it’s dinner time and anything that keeps guests entertained at the table on Thanksgiving is a welcome resource. So, I hope you can also potentially use this to help your children boost their vocabulary and even practice some spelling and reading this season. Have fun! Don’t each too much turkey and enjoy your day! By the way there are two ways to print this sweet little free Thanksgiving printables worksheet out. You can right click the above and save it and print that way. BUT I give you permission to only do this with printables here because this content is copyrighted. OR you can click on the PDF highlighted link below and print that. Easy Peasy! thanksgiving 2 paula

I apologize in advance for this small rant of mine. It is a little thing. An issue that is just nagging at the back of my brain like a itch begging for a scratch and so I clearly have to scratch it today, right now. This itch is a bit about me, but more so about business and professionalism and the spaces in which we use words to define us and label us. See right now, this itchy thing is threatening to become a full blown rash and I swear I know full well that is TMI and way more than you needed to know dear reader, but I can’t. I cannot. I really can’t ignore a moment longer. The itch started when I saw the word Mommy Bloggers this week written on a brand campaign many have seen by now and it’s distracting me from my job today. What’s in a phrase? Or a word? Or a term? Well, a lot actually. Words can build us up or tear us down. There are many words I cringe at and will not use. There are some I reframe and use as little springboards to launch into a learning moment. The R word contains some history and cruelty and I reject it. It demeans people with disabilities and differences. I wish that word had never existed. My kids know my feelings on the R word and they have a unique insight into why I don’t use that word here. In this safe space, everyone has abilities and differences and nobody should be put down or made to feel less than someone else. Together, when we hear someone use the R word as slang and we are out in public, we sometimes rephrase – “do you mean to say X?” Or we remind each other afterwards why we don’t use that word. It is mean and hurtful. There are other racially charged words we each know never to use in this house. What does any of that have to do with Mommy Bloggers as a term? Well, I think we can all agree words have meaning. They are our basic units of communication. They are also how I build stories and make a living. Words are how we tell someone No or Stop. Words can be weapons. They can be powerful or weak, meaningful, or insignificant, small bridges between other words. They are hopeful balloons in our chest radiating feelings. Alternatively sometimes words are our anchors. They are beautiful and sad, heavy and light. They are flowery sometimes when we are painting a romance and tender, we hope, when we recognize love. They are abusive too often, misused at times and even clumsy. Words are hopeful, helpful, wise and unwise. They convey accents, sometimes ancestry and sometimes social status and education. I am not judging anyone who doesn’t care about labels or words. I do. I care a lot about words. I have deep respect for bloggers. I am a blogger. But when I hear the term Mommy Blogger lately I get irritated and itchy. I tried it on a few times today and wondered why it bothers me so suddenly. I never used to really pay attention to it or care. And yet today I find myself holding the term up and turning it over in my hand like a book. If you as a blogger identify yourself as that and own the label as something you are comfortable with that is your business. But this is my take: To me, the term Mommy Bloggers is patronizing. It is used by a public relations professional or a marketing person or business person to keep women bloggers in a tidy little box. It is cutesy, a bit overly familiar and unprofessional in tone. Mommy is what I am to my kids and I fought hard to become that and they can call me Mom, Mommy, Mama, or Momma. It is their word and in their context I become that word. Mommy belongs to them. But in the context of what is a professional relationship as a writer, a marketing consultant, an editor, photographer, reviewer, influencer, chef, stylist, publisher and business person, I am not a Mommy anything. And in fact today this is my litmus test of whether this is an okay term: when was the last time you heard someone refer to Daddy bloggers? It’s Dad bloggers, or bloggers when men are concerned. I bring to writing and all things job related my experience as a Mom, but I am a writer, a marketer, a consultant, editor. You can call me Paula, you can call me journalist, writer, blogger, business person or perhaps even friend. You may address me by name. YOU may not call me mommy blogger. What are your thoughts? Is this just semantics or does the phrase mommy bloggers matter?

I found my word for 2015 in centergy class, where I do yoga and pilates moves and strive to get fit. I could care less if that sounds cliche. It’s the truth. I have been searching for a word to help me give a focus to this year. I choose one every year. But this year I have been stuck. I loved the word Travel and wanted to make that my word BUT it seems so dependent on many other things. Travel depends on the economy, the number of holidays my husband is able to take, the children’s schedules, and the income here at my business. While I will strive to make this a year in which I travel as much as possible, travel is not my defining word for 2015. I also feel like 2014 was an exceptional year for travel. I travelled way more than I ever thought I would, covering Colombia with World Vision Canada and Mexico as a media trip and then San Jose, California, Vancouver, Alberta, and Atlanta and Florida, culminating in a Caribbean cruise. I made 2014 meaningful and travelled a lot. But travel will not be my word for 2015. So what and where was that word? 2014 was growth. It was truly a year for growing personally and professionally. We moved to a bigger home. My family grew up and my business grew again as it continues to – happily for me. We have grown and we will keep growing. In 2013 I used the word health and I strived for healthy living and a healthy attitude in all things. That was a challenge. I have seen a lot of words I love, used by other bloggers and business people and I enjoy watching this process of growth and definition. But for me the word of the year was elusive this month. Yesterday it hit me during that blissful period at the end of a harsh one hour workout when I rest in relaxation mode for 4 to 5 minutes striving to quiet everything around me, and everything inside me. Centergy is a yoga pilates fusion done to popular top 40 music that I love. It makes me feel good and healthy and energized. It makes me feel closer to my mother as well. Maybe that’s weird but there is a spiritual component to my class that helps me to achieve balance and energy and strength and harmony. And I feel her there. 2015 is a year that is decisive to me. It is the middle of a decade and the number 5 seems decisive. Strong. There’s no turning back after five. The year 2015 could have been about the word NO. But I decided that was too negative. Celebrate. Much nicer and such a lovely goal to build on. Celebrate. Celebrate life. Because it is precious and very short. Celebrate family because many do not have such gifts. Celebrate doing something I love as a career and business. Celebrate waking up. Celebrate being able to move with strength and precision and balance through all the various fitness classes and workouts I tackle. Celebrate marriage and living and travel and life. Celebrate love. Celebrate all the gifts I have. Celebrate having a voice and using it. Celebrate all things. Celebrate. This is my word of the year for 2015. What is your word for 2015? Do you have one?

This is my first ever word search hosted on Thrifty Momma’s Tips. If you folks like it then I will decide if I should run more or not. In the mean time here is a quick freebie to keep the kids busy for Valentine’s Day. Happy searching! Why Word Searches? Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and we love word searches so I thought I would put together a speedy Valentines Day Word Search for readers to enjoy. I have been a fan of word searches ever since I was a kid. I used to take them to doctor’s appointments and I always had one on hand every time I had to go into the hospital for Crohn’s Disease as a youth. They pass the time, aren’t totally mindless and they are also a lot of fun. So happy hunting and Happy Valentine’s Day too! Word Games Recently on our cruise we ended up doing a lot of fancy meal times with children. Now our children are both 10 and 13, but they still need incentives to keep them at the table and they struggle with sitting still and waiting. What kid doesn’t? So happy that we had some word searches packed and ready to pull out to do together when they began to get crazed or hyper. I still love a good word search to this day. Crosswords are fun too but these are my favourites. You can use this one by right clicking and printing it. or you can click the link below and it will lead to a PDF version of the same Valentines Day Word Search.
