Here’s to your little writers and content creators. Let’s celebrate and nurture the creative souls with this Magician Writing Prompt Printable Activity. Easy Indoor Activities for Creative Kids First, if your kids are hunting for activities that are quiet and indoors this winter, then here’s a thought. Why not offer up some writing prompts to get them creating content? Writing is a great way to express imagination while exploring literacy through spelling and grammar. And second of all, this Magician Writing Prompt is simple and fun. Who doesn’t adore magic and magicians? Writers Will Write One millliiiiooooooonnn years ago, in grade school, I discovered a love of writing. Obviously, I still write and am happy to call that my career and vocation, but I first realized a love of the written word as a child. I didn’t need a writing prompt to be inspired and really all I needed was a pencil and a blank page. But, I know that my teachers offered all sorts of worksheets to my class. This Magician Writing Prompt Post contains affiliate links as a service to readers. I receive a small commission via qualifying purchases. I was that kid who asked the teacher for homework, or worksheets to take home on the weekend and over the holidays. Frankly, I lived in my head and that trickled out onto paper all the years of my life. Oh sure, not every child is like that, but some kids are searching for creative outlets and ways to express themselves. By contrast, others will need a nudge in the right direction. My youngest daughter often enjoys writing stories. She has written some posts here like this Harry Potter is the Best Movie Series for a pandemic post and this Travel with Teens post. Frankly, it gives me joy to see that at least one of my kids likes writing in her spare time. She has found a voice through repetitive practice and by scribbling in journals for years on end now. For me, I think my love for writing started in grade 2 and has only grown over the years. Reading all of the amazing books I could at that age and stage made me want to try writing. In grade two I actually wrote a small book with a classmate named Matt and I dubbed myself an author. The other child was sort of mortified as I recall. Some of my Favourite Childhood Books Nostalgia alert: my favourite books in grade 2/3 were The Anne of Green Gables Series and also the Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House on the Prairie series. However, I didn’t mind getting special single volumes either, such as: any Jean Little book or later on the Are You There God, Judy Blume books. For holidays like birthdays and Christmas, I was overjoyed if I got a diary, journal, fancy writing pen, or a boxed set of books. Nancy Drew came in handy around grade 3/4. How to Get This Magician Writing Prompt Activity So, how do you access this printable worksheet? First, access via the link below and print it out for your kids. This could be a great way for them to explore creativity for an hour or two. Please let me know if they are really into writing and I will share more of these types of posts and writing prompts. What are you writing about right now? Do you journal? Do you write?

This season, I am hunting down easy activities that remind us to find gratitude and give thanks. This Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt is a fun way to find some gratitude and involve the entire family in the process. What are Your Thankful For? Finding Gratitude in the every day and celebrating that can be hard work. I have been working on this during the year and I can tell you some days I succeed and others not so much. This year has tested most of us, I think. Typically, I start my day with a gratitude exercise, but to be very honest that is sometimes forgotten when I am dragging myself out of bed and I am totally drained of energy. Food is Worth Celebrating Thanksgiving is one of my daughter’s favourite holidays because of the turkey actually. She lives for turkey cooked by my husband and sometimes cooked by her uncle or aunt. So there’s always food to be grateful for and frankly sharing a meal and laughter with friends is one of the greatest ways to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company. Even on the hardest days, I still believe that it is always worth trying to find and express gratitude daily. Thanksgiving is a time traditionally when we make a moment for that practice. Ultimately, I like to remind myself though that no matter where I am in the world on Thanksgiving Day, I have a lot to give thanks for. What are Your Plans This Year? This year we will be here in Ontario, Canada for Thanksgiving. For a few years, I travelled every Thanksgiving, but our tradition is to visit my brother and his family in Toronto. I look forward to making that trip again this coming month. Hopefully, Ontario continues to heal from Coronavirus and numbers don’t climb again. Of course, we will be watching the numbers and advisories closely and if they creep up then we will need to adjust our expectations. Thanksgiving is for Family It seems like it has been forever since we drove to Toronto. For months we were all social distancing and unable to drive even so far as Toronto just two hours away. As soon as the restrictions lifted though, they drove to see us and to stay with us for a weekend in July. That was so overdue and welcome. In August, we visited them in Sauble Beach at a cottage. How to get this Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt This year I might print this Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt out and take it with me. I will most definitely be collecting seed pods and saving them for the spring. Checking that off the list soon. You might also appreciate the seasonal Crossword Puzzle. Happy Thanksgiving! My family, good health and a job I love are all things that I give thanks for today and every day. What are you grateful for today?

What do you know about the turkey life cycle? If you are at all like me, then it stands to reason that you know very little about our feathered friends. I have always taken turkey for granted as a tasty staple of the Thanksgiving season. But, there’s actually quite a lot to know about turkey. It’s an interesting bird. Since the Thanksgiving and Fall season is fast approaching I thought that perhaps we could share some turkey facts and provide a cute little turkey life cycle booklet and activity for kids. Keep this reference for later. I have other life cycle booklets that are equally educational. For instance, don’t miss the seahorse life cycle activity and facts worksheet. 13 Turkey Facts to Ponder: Did you know that the thing that hangs from the turkey’s head to mid chest is called a Snood? In fact, turkeys have some oddball parts: snood, wattle and beard are all part of their anatomy. How can you tell if a turkey is a male or female? The POOP. Female turkey poo is a J shape. Male turkeys excrete fecal matter that looks like a corkscrew. WEIRD but true. Turkeys have exceptional eye sight. In fact, it is much better than 20/20 and that permits them to see predators many yards away. In fact, despite that ridiculous episode of WKRP in Cincinnati, turkeys can fly and they can swim too. John F. Kennedy was the first official sitting president of the USA to pardon his gifted turkey….but Abraham Lincoln unofficially did the same because apparently his son befriended the turkey they had been given. At one point in time, the early 1900s, turkeys were almost extinct. Nutrition and Cooking? When buying your Thanksgiving or Christmas turkey if stuck figuring out how big it should be, use this rule of thumb. Allow about one pound of uncooked turkey per person. If you want leftovers make it 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 pounds per person. Turkey delivers 8 essential amino acids, making it a complete protein according to Ontario Turkey. Also according to Ontario Turkey, turkey is naturally low in sodium, which means I need to buy more of it actually. I am all about low sodium here due to high blood pressure monitoring. That’s good for my life cycle not just the turkey life cycle. LOL. How to Get This and More Finally, a Few Random Turkey Facts While Turkey was indigenous to Plymouth, Massachusetts, there’s no evidence that it was eaten at that first ever Thanksgiving dinner feast. Bet you didn’t know that turkeys have two stomachs. That’s probably what you wish you had this Thanksgiving, so that you could eat more turkey. A turkey can incubate as many as 18 eggs at a time. But that number is typically between 10 and 12 eggs. Gobbler is a male turkey and that’s also the noise he makes. Enjoy Your Thanksgiving!

Seahorses are incredibly fascinating creatures, which is why I thought this Seahorse Lifecycle activity worksheet for kids could be a great educational post to share this week. Post may contain affiliate links as a service to readers. I receive a small commission via qualifying links. Right now, we can all use every extra educational resource we can find. So, here’s a great little seahorse worksheet for you to share with your kids. These tiny swimmers are a natural marvel of the undersea environment. Have you ever seen one in an aquarium or up close while snorkelling or scuba diving? If so, I want to hear about it. But First the Seahorse Facts There are about 40 known species of seahorses. Seahorse males carry the babies, as you will see below. In fact, they are the only species on earth where the male carries the babies. They live in coral reefs, mangroves and sheltered underwater environments that offer natural camouflage from predators. They have prehensile tails….(that means they can use their t ails like a limb, not unlike a monkey tail.) They use their tails to anchor themselves to sea grasses and coral. Also, these prehensile tails mean they can anchor themselves to things when a strong current comes by and they will not be swept away with the current. These adorable seahorse creatures often swim in pairs with tails intertwined. (isn’t that cute?) What’s the snout for? For eating, of course. Lengthy snouts allow them to suck up plankton and small crustaceans. Their snouts act as a vacuum cleaner. Print Out This Seahorse Lifecycle Worksheet Ten More Seahorse Facts: 7. They use the small fin on their back to propel themselves. It moves up to 35 times per second. 8. The lifespan of a seahorse can be 1 – 5 years. 9. Did you know that seahorses mate for life and are very monogamous? That’s a great new word for some of the kids to learn( which basically means mates for life and has one partner for life.) 10. I bet you din’t know that seahorses are fish. They live underwater, breathe through gills and have a sea bladder. 11. Baby seahorses are called seahorse fry. When my kids were small they had a great little book about animals and their babies and it talked about what every animal grouping is called. The coolest one of all was crows….did you know that a group of crows is called a murder. A murder of crows. 12. Eyesight of a seahorse is incredible. 13. There are about 54 species of seahorses worldwide. 14. A threatened species? Many people might not know that seahorses are under threat worldwide. Often seahorses and crabs are taken from the shallow waters where they swim and left to dry out then are made into souvenirs. Sometimes, they are also used in Chinese medicine. 15. Less than 1 in 1,000 born survive due to predators. …Are you into seahorses? Check out this adorable Seahorse print pillow. 16. These clever creatures change colour to match their surroundings and during courtship rituals. Don’t Miss this Eric Carle Seahorse book for preschoolers. It is a classic picture book about fatherhood and of course it has the most amazing colourful illustrations. What Do Seahorses Eat? Plankton and small crustaceans are the foods of choice. Each seahorse can also consume unto 3,000 brine shrimp a day – those are the extremely tiny shrimp that come in those tiny little Sea Monkeys kits that people used to buy. We had one here once and it was actually fun for the kids to watch those tiny critters. Looking for More Seahorse Facts? Check out The Seahorse Trust for more educational and accurate facts about seahorses. You might also consider this – > Seahorses Book from Amazon. To Download this seahorse lifecycle sheet for your use. Click on the link below. This seahorse lifecycle activity sheet is copyright protected. Please do not republish on your site or take the illustration for commercial use. That’s illegal. I love providing these educational activities for you and your kids, but can’t do so if they are stolen and republished.

There are many ways to get kids involved in learning. An All About Me Book can be a great way to get them to work through some early identity issues. Things like who is in my family and how old am I are very important, especially when starting preschool or kindergarten. This Sports All About Me Book is intended to help. With my kids sometimes when they are struggling I ask them – “Hey who is on your team? ” “Mom is.” And then they list the people on their team. Sometimes it’s grudgingly, but often by the end of the conversation they’re reminded there are people that will always have their back. Or to beat a metaphor to death – go to bat for them in life. And when they are being really abrasive and challenging and prickly I also say the same thing and use the same metaphor. Just remember who is on your team. As in, don’t alienate the people who are on that team. My kids haven’t been young enough to use a book like this in awhile, but I know that these types of tools were super useful when they were small. I hope this Sports All About Me book is a great opportunity for them to grow and explore their family and their identity while learning and having fun too. If your child is clearly ready to start printing and doing a bit of reflection on figuring out who is this Sports All About Me book will be perfect. Sports All About Me Book To get this activity and printable just click the PDF below and print. Reminder – please do not republish these. That is against copyright law. In the mean time I will read about it and gather information. Wonder who would like to come with me… These Australia map World Continents worksheets and fact sheets aren’t for adults, they are for school aged children. You might also simply have them do these for extra work when studying the Australia map. Australia is a super interesting place. For one the seasons seem almost upside down compared to those in North America. Everyone knows the iconic Sydney Opera House for its unique architecture. You’ve probably heard the term outback and even thought of the movie Crocodile Dundee in reference to Australia and the Australia Map. But did you also know that the opera house was opened in 1973 and designed by a famous Danish architect? This is also a decent little test of how much you know about Australia and the Australia map. As for me, I could find it on the map, and name a few facts about the continent, but other than that I would not win Australian trivia games for sure. PIN FOR LATER – > A Few Kooky Facts about Australia: Wombat poop is cubed. There are 3 times more sheep than people in Australia. Australia was the second country in the world to allow women to vote. If you like this post then you will love this Solar System Learning Package too.

Today I thought it would be useful to share my Label the Canadian provinces worksheet because it’s educational and helpful for kids learning about Canada. I confess that one of my daughters struggles with geography and visual spatial perception. What does that mean? Well, it means that she needs extra help figuring out things sometimes. For instance if I asked her to draw a map of Canada she would genuinely struggle. If I asked her to put all the names of the provinces on this map she would need support with that. Sometimes seeing her struggle with geography It is a little bit sad for me to witness as her Mom, partly because we travel a lot as a family. Travel makes geography real for me. It has not had the same effect on her quite yet. Canadian Provinces and Territories I am ever hopeful that with enough repetition and practice some things will become engrained in her memory. So, tools that help her to practice and build her memory are valuable to me. That’s why one of my helpers here created a Canadian provinces worksheet printable. I know very well that my child is not the only one who struggles with ideas like this. In fact, many of my readers homeschool and several also have children with unique needs like mine. Others simply like being able to use these free printables and worksheets to supplement education or to challenge kids in their spare time. So, here is a printable worksheet that will help them learn. More Resources Just right click the above and save it and print it out. Then help your kids or your students to label the Canadian provinces. If you need any other easy worksheets you can visit my Pinterest Free Printables board. Other Printable Worksheets This one was an Easter printable. My Pinterest board is always hopping with information and more free printables like this free spring printables word search. You might also Love this Solar System Unit. Quick Update – June 2019 – a reader has rightly pointed out that Newfoundland and Labrador are the same province now and have been since 2011. So kindly make note of that. At some point I will fully update this map of Canada for you. Happy Teaching!

The ancestry topic is hot no matter what age you are. At some point in your child’s education they will start to learn about ancestry and heritage. This Traditional Family Tree Printable for kids can help them sort some of their heritage out. Family Tree PS-1 When you have little people it can be a lot of fun to help them discover their world. Part of that discovery process also involves figuring out who belongs where. Which uncle is married to which aunt? Who is that, as far as it relates to Daddy? My one daughter, even at 10, will still ask sometimes: is Uncle Ken Daddy’s brother or who is he married to? It takes practice and reminders and a lot of repetition to get the relationships all figured out. For your child, it’s all part of figuring out where they fit in your family. This Family Day, one of my talented helpers here built this Family Tree to share with my Thrifty Momma’s Tips readers. I like that this can be used any time of year at home just to help your little person figure out who goes where. The traditional Family Tree Printable is free to download, but please do not copy it. I give you permission to access it one of two ways. You can right click on the image and save to your computer and then print. But I always do this instead: click on the link above and print it out from a PDF. It’s much clearer and a nicer image too. Of course, there are days when these types of activities can bring up interesting questions. Why doesn’t Uncle Joe have a wife? Whose tummy did you come out of? And so on. Stay tuned because tomorrow I have the Family Tree for Adoptive Families!! I am super excited about that one. We could have used it many times over as my kids were growing up. Thanks for reading and have fun doing this together. Happy Family Day!
