Travel Tuesday Linky – Hair in Costa Maya, Mexico

Travel Costa Maya
Travel Costa Maya

Remember how I told you we went on a cruise? (I might have mentioned it once or twice.) Our first port was Costa Maya, Mexico. We have been to Mexico several times. Most recently I was there with my older daughter visiting Puerto Vallarta back in June for a media trip. This time we parachuted in so to speak on a short time frame. We just had the day, really. It was our first stop out of four. I mentioned Roatan here last week. We left the United States from Tampa and travelled for a full day getting used to our time at sea.

We decided to take that first port as a leisurely day browsing shops and spending time relaxing and swimming. It was a long time coming. Excursions in the area centred on touring the Mayan Ruins. We have, in fact, already done that. One year we visited Cancun and we toured the ruins and took photos and learned all that we could in the blistering April sun. The kids soaked the knowledge up and I loved seeing Chichen Itza. This time in Costa Maya, Mexico we sipped Corona and swam in a pool.

At the Carnival Cruise stop in Costa Maya there is a swim with dolphins type of excursion. But having done that at Dolphin Discovery in Puerto Vallarta, in June, we were spoiled and the set up in Costa Maya looked much less appealing. I wouldn’t recommend it. The dolphin space was far too tiny for me to feel good about doing anything at all with the captive animals. We took a pass. The bars and restaurants were fair, but there was a bit of mature content, if you know what I mean.

After an afternoon sunning ourselves, we were glad we saved our money for a big excursion that Wednesday in Belize. I think that was the right choice and Belize was well worth it. The snorkelling alone was incredible.

Both of the girls brought some spending money and because the word vacation is somehow synonymous with getting her hair braided, Ainsley opted to spend her money here in Costa Maya. She got a head full of tiny tight braids. I never mind her spending her money to get her hair braided, because it means no arguments over brushing her hair for the rest of the vacation. That alone is peaceful. Like a little mini hair vacation.
