Baking soda uses are many and varied. It’s a magical inexpensive tool for the home, really, but not everyone knows all of its abilities. In my twenties, I thought baking soda was mostly used in baking, odour removal. In my 30s I started using Arm & Hammer™ Baking Soda for cleaning. But there are many other uses too. Arm & Hammer™ Baking Soda has been helping generations of Canadian families cook and clean for decades. Baking Soda Uses You Probably Never Knew Over the years, the team at Arm & Hammer – with the help of their loyal fans – have come up with more than 100 uses for baking soda and I’m sharing some of my favourites here. Heartburn Relief: Mix 1/2 teaspoon with 4 ounces of water to relieve heartburn. Baby, baby, baby. Baking soda is an all-natural cleaning product that’s gentle enough for baby clothes, yet effective enough for big baby odours. It can be used to treat spills on carpets, clean equipment and toys, deodorize baby bottles and diaper pails as well as freshen stuffed animals to give them a new life. Not just for cooking in the kitchen. Arm & Hammer Baking Soda is a staple baking ingredient as it causes dough or batter to rise, becoming light and porous when heated. It can also be used in the kitchen to clean lunch boxes, microwave ovens, dishes, pots and pans, recyclables, drains and garbage disposals. Did I mention it removes odours from plastic containers, polishes silver, freshens sponges and stinky sinks, refreshes tea pots, cups and mugs and works great as a fruit and vegetable scrub? It’s also a common deodorizer for fridges and freezers. Change the box every 30 days. Soothe Skin: Add 1 cup of baking soda to your bathwater to soften and soothe skin. Relieve Insect Bites: Use a simple paste of baking soda and water to soothe insect bites. Easily Relieve Diaper Rash: Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to baby’s bathwater to help soothe irritated diaper rash areas. Tackles the greasiest of garages. Arm & Hammer Baking Soda safely cleans your car lights, chrome, windows, tires, vinyl seats and floor mats without you having to worry about unwanted scratch marks. It’s also a great deodorizer for car interiors and camper water tanks and tackles oil and grease stains on your garage floor or driveway. Don’t forget to take it outside. It is a must-have for your next camping trip! It’s a dish and pot scrubber, hand cleanser and deodorant, just to name a few. It also cleans your plastic and vinyl pool toys as well as lawn furniture when it’s time to bring them out for the summer and works wonders on barbecue grills. DIY Air and Fabric Freshener: Mix 1 tablespoon baking soda with 5 to 6 drops of any essential oil in a spray bottle and fill with water. Spray into the air or on furniture. Laundry Detergent Booster: Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to your laundry to soften water for better cleaning. Never fret about your floors. It helps remove unsightly scuff marks without unwanted scratch marks from tile and no-wax floors. It’s also great at neutralizing common household odours and freshens stale-smelling air in your home. Keep Flowers Fresh: Add a teaspoon of baking soda to your flower vase to keep your blooms fresh and beautiful for a longer period. Natural Bean-O: Sprinkle a teaspoon of baking soda to your water when soaking your beans to prevent the gas that comes with eating them. Keep Ants Away: Mix equal parts baking soda and salt and sprinkle wherever you see ants entering your home. Baking Soda Uses that are Outside the Box Because of the gentle and all natural formula of Arm & Hammer™ Baking Soda, it’s a popular personal hygiene product for many. It can be used as a body and facial scrub, hand cleanser and a refreshing bath soak. It also helps to fight bad breath and body odour and is great for washing hair. For a full list of these 100 uses of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and usage instructions, visit www.armandhammer.ca.

I am a Mom to extremely active girls, who do martial arts, and theatre and horseback riding, track and field and swimming and well, honestly the list seems endless some weeks. Soon we add skating and skiing to the mix. Hallelujah for snow sports. I love them. But what I don’t love is stinky sports gear. The sports gear that comes with each activity can get extremely unpleasant smelling. When we ski we sweat profusely. That’s the sign of a great workout. When Ainsley rides her horse at SARI therapy riding, those nights are stop, drop the clothing in the laundry room immediately, and jump into the shower. The benefits of horseback riding for her are so great, but horses have a super distinct smell and riding pants and socks tend to absorb the fresh farm aroma fast. Don’t even get me started about the karate sports gear. My kids spar and they warm up and they do their forms and their lessons and if you don’t think that’s a workout then you’ve never really watched a teen dripping sweat in the dojo while doing a complex series of rolls and high kicks and finger sets. It all looks very artistic and impressive when they are doing their lessons and when they are competing. But, it does not smell the best when the lesson is done. Watching your child succeed at any sport or artistic activity is rewarding and fulfilling. There’s nothing better than seeing my kids perform and feel proud of their own accomplishments. Prepare for Winter sports season: Stay on Top of Smelly Sports Gear 1) Develop a routine: The fall and winter months are nuts. One of my girls is in her eighth year of theatre and I am still barely on top of her schedule. Thankfully it’s show week right now so that activity is in high gear this week and next, but it will soon taper off and make way for more martial arts time and then skiing season arrives. Establish a schedule and use your phone or apps to keep track of who goes where at what time. I’d be lost without my iPhone calendar. Stick to a homework schedule and ensure that any athletic bags are ready to go when needed. Around here we have a theatre bag with dance clothing, scripts, and shoes and we have a separate martial arts bag for each of the girls. 2) Banish smelly sports gear: It’s surprising how such a big smell can come from a kid! Girls too. Any sports gear gets sweaty when when your child is working hard and giving it their all. Stop stinky sports gear from taking over. Air out equipment after each use. Wash items that can be machine washed. Pro tip: Use a detergent that’s up to the challenge such as OxiCleanTM HD Liquid Laundry Detergent and Arm & HammerTM Plus OxiCleanTM Cold Water Power Paks – For the riding pants and socks that Ainsley uses this is CRUCIAL. That stuff needs to be cleaned right away. 3) Maintain a positive attitude: The number one goal (pun intended!) for your child doing any sort of sports activity should be having fun and getting exercise. Whether it’s a “win” or “lose” being part of a team can help your child learn valuable life skills and feel that they belong somewhere with a group of likeminded active peers. My one daughter gets that from her theatre group. My other daughter really finds martial arts and skiing to be her happiest places. She was meant to be active. 4) Get to know other sports or theatre parents: Creating a network of other parents can add a fun social element to the experience. Plus, it’s a great way to stay connected and easily be able to coordinate carpools and call-in a last minute favour if you can’t make a practice. 5) Make some memories: Take pictures, attend the games and the tournaments when you are able. Celebrate with your child when they excel at something and be the shoulder they can safely vent on when they are upset with the way a game or lesson or tournament turned out. What are your tips for surviving sports with your kids? I am giving away a bundle of goodies to help you get through winter sports season. Good Luck! Open to Canada only! OxiCleanTM HD Liquid Laundry Detergent Arm & HammerTM Plus OxiCleanTM Cold Water Power Paks Arm & HammerTM Baking Soda Arm & HammerTM SpinbrushTM battery powered toothbrush The Ultimate Spider-Man TM OrajelTM Spider-ManTM Anticavity Fluoride Toothpaste Total Value: Approx. $35 I am a Church and Dwight ambassador and as such I have been compensated.

My kids are both athletic young women. Staying physically active, playing sports and striving to do your best – well, that’s something we take to heart as a family. Whether it’s swimming, martial arts or track and field, sports matter to the health of both boys and girls. When kids get out on the field or the court, they learn teamwork, develop a better work ethic, get into better shape, and boost their self confidence. Unfortunately, girls are at a serious disadvantage when it comes to playing sports. With less opportunities and less variety, girls often have to take what they can get. Playtex Sport wants to change that and make it easier for girls to Play On. Girls Need Equal Access to Sports Female athletes are doing great things in the world. Look at the incredible performance of Penny Oleksiak, the Canadian 16-year-old swimming phenomenon. Oleksiak won four medals at the Olympics to capture national attention. And there are so many other amazing performances from countries around the world. Performances of women who smash their competition. It all started somewhere, and usually that somewhere is youth sports. Unfortunately, 72% of Canadian girls say that they’re unable to participate to their full potential in high school sports and 48% say that boys have more choices when it comes to high school sports. That is unacceptable. Girls have just as much right and need to get out there and dominate as the boys do, and we need to make that happen for them. Girls already face so many obstacles in sports. We know many girls will drop out of sports during puberty because of issues related to body image. I have seen how this happens and it’s challenging to help your daughter realize that a love of swimming shouldn’t end just because she feels self conscious when she puts a swimsuit on. Young women need more opportunities to get in the game and keeping playing sports. Playtex Sport feels the same way. Playtex feminine care brand believes nothing should hold young women back from playing sports, especially not their periods. That’s why this August, the Playtex Play On Canada Grant Program will be offering up to $50,000 in funding for girls’ high school sports teams. Through this grant, Playtex aims to help young female athletes reach their full potential. So sports excellence and performance is just as much a reality for girls as it is for boys. Play On with Playtex Kids shouldn’t be limited in playing sports based on gender. When my youngest daughter was 3 or 4 she would ask: “Momma can a girl be a firefighter?” “Of course,” I’d tell her. “Momma can a girl be a soccer player?” “Yes.” I told her every time. Of course what every little girl is really asking when they ask those questions is – Can I do that when I grow up? Never did I ever say “Honey, chances are good that in high school you will NOT have as many opportunities to be athletic as the boys will.” Whether boys get more sports opportunities due to the type of sports, or funding or popularity, it doesn’t really matter. Girls need the same sports outlets boys have. There are so many brilliant female athletes and role models. Olympic champions often begin at the school level. Our young female athletes need support. To level the playing field and encourage girls to Play ON®!, Playtex® Sport® is accepting applications for Playtex® Play On® Canada grants for girls’ high school sports teams across Canada. Grant applications can be submitted at www.playtexplayon.ca. Already two Canadian high schools have received grants to help female high school athletes stay in the game. Join Playtex and help Canadian girls Play On, because playing sports shouldn’t be an exercise in taking what you can get. From now until October 31, 2016, Canadians can submit grant applications for girls’ high school sports programs at www.playtexplayon.ca. For more details you can also watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4C_CzlpLWPY In addition to inviting grant applications, Playtex® is encouraging the conversation about girls’ sports in Canada using the hashtag #playonCA. Instagram: @playtexplayon Twitter: @playtexplayon Facebook: www.facebook.com/playtexplayon Limit one application per nominator. Award of grant monies not guaranteed. Subject to Terms and Conditions at www.playtexplayon.ca. [tweetthis]Forward this post to your daughter’s high school sports team. They can enter for a #PlayonCA grant[/tweetthis] As a special treat for one lucky Canadian reader I also have a Playtex Canada giveaway worth $60.
