My kids and I love to cook. These days, when the weather is frigid and my time is at a premium I love to make soups and stews and healthy delicious meals that last for a couple of nights. Comfort food that warms you right up and wards off the chilly temperatures while boosting your body with vitamins. Potatoes are a great source of vitamins and I grew up eating potatoes with most dinner time meals.
My enthusiastic helper. Actually, usually she is a happy camper, but in this picture, she is clearly humouring me.
I still love potatoes in all their various forms, but here’s the thing: nobody, and I mean nobody likes peeling potatoes. Ick! It is a time zapper and a really boring job. I lived in a co-op residence in University and one of my jobs was peeling potatoes for everyone, so I had my fill of that job when I was 19 and 20. These days, I often have my kids do the potato peeling, which at least helps me out a bit. This week I was asked to post a recipe from Cavendish and we went shopping at Sobey’s where we found a huge variety of Cavendish Fresh From the Farm potato wedges to Flavour Crisp sweet potato strips. So we picked up several bags to try a variety.
For our first night this week we had chicken slathered in plain yogurt and then coated with bread crumbs and parmesan cheese. (My recipe ) Bake that for about one hour at 350 degrees. We chose to add peas as our side and then we also quickly put some Cavendish sweet potato strips on a cookie sheet and cooked them in the oven for about 12 minutes (that’s fast.) Flip them half way through. The whole family loves sweet potato fries and these strips from the Cavendish Premium Flavour Crisp line were really yummy. It’s nice to know you can add something this nutritious and quick to a week night dinner.
The next night we tackled a recipe from the –
Cavendish website Cavendish Farms
I never would have thought of using Cavendish From The Farms potato wedges in a soup or stew, but when I looked at the Cavendish site the one recipe that jumped out at me was – SlowCooked Beef Stew – what a concept. It saved so much time.
This is our version (above).

And this is the version on the web site under dinner options. |
Before I tried this recipe I didn’t even know Cavendish potatoes fresh from Prince Edward Island had recipes posted on their web site. There are quite a lot of helpful ideas for quick nutritious dinners on the site, so check it out. This version of slow cooked beef stew saved me a lot of time and was very good, as usual. This one calls for the From The Farm Rustic Reds. I actually threw in some wedges too. The final result was fast, simple and delicious, plus nothing beats the smell of a slow cooker spreading a luscious aroma throughout the house all day.
The Cavendish web site has a lot of information about potatoes and it boasts recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So, next time you need potatoes for a recipe give these a try.
Cavendish potatoes are Canadian. They are grown in the rich red soil of Price Edward Island, some of the best soil in the world for growing potatoes. The hard-working individuals working at Cavendish only select the best premium potatoes. Cavendish From The Farm potatoes are prepare with the skin on and are made with 100 % Canola oil. They are lightly seasoned with sea salt. The whole family enjoyed these several times this week already. Cavendish potatoes are low in saturated fat too. The price is right on these potatoes and frankly items that save me time are worth their weight in gold. I will buy the wedges and russet red potatoes again. They were tasty, affordable and simple to use.
Cavendish Potatoes are available at: Sobeys, Metro, Real Canadian Superstore, Foodland, Highland Farms, and Shoppers Drug Mart (in fact they are the only wedges sold at Shoppers.)
We like the sweet potato crisps too.
Disclosure: I am participating in the From the Farm blog tour by Mom Central Canada on behalf of Cavendish. I received compensation for taking part in the blog tour and sharing my honest opinion.

We too have been making quite a few potato dishes recently, as it seems to be potato season at our grocery store!

I love Cavendish potatoes! Makes it so easy to add a side to a dish or just eat on their own. I’ll have to try the yogurt on chicken! Never thought of doing that. We recently had something similar with just bread crumbs, parmesan cheese, parsley and pepper. No Cavendish potatoes though 🙁 Boo! lol

I was really impressed with the varieties we tried. I’ll have to look for the sweet potato variety. There is nothing like a PEI potato:)

The stew looks great. I wouldn’t have thought to use them either but that is a great idea. We are having the red diced potatoes tonight with sausages. 🙂
