Quebec City – A Mix of Old and New

Quebec City has a long history, and it can be seen everywhere. From the old world architecture and atmosphere of Old Quebec, to the modern architecture of the rest of the city, all of Quebec City is a feast for the eyes. There’s also no shortage of things to see and do in this beautiful urban sprawl. We have visited the province a few times. My kids speak French and are very into French culture.

Old Quebec

Old Quebec features more than just old world architecture. It also boasts a friendly atmosphere and European charm. Horse-drawn carriages, street entertainers, singers, and artist can be found throughout this part of the city. You can take a leisurely walk along the Dufferin Terrace and enjoy the beauty of the St. Lawrence Rive and the surrounding area, as well as visit the open-air art gallery, Rue de Tresor.

Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre Shrine

The gorgeous Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre Shrine has been a place of miracles for over 350 years. It’s North America’s oldest pilgrimage site and attracts around one million visitors a year. This neo-Roman style basilica boasts a golden statue of Saint Anne, hundreds of stained glass windows, the nave, and fantastic works of art.

Plains of Abraham

The Plains of Abraham in Quebec City is considered one of the world’s largest and best urban parks. In the summer, you can take walks, go cycling, picnick, or just enjoy the beauty of the park. In the winter, romp in the snow, go cross-country skiing, and enjoy the winter wonderland that the Plains of Abraham become every year.

Ile d’Orleans

Just a stone’s throw from Quebec City is Ile d’Orleans. Visit this island and get a peek into what Quebec’s countryside would have been like in the 19th century. Tour the beautiful countryside and take in its historic farms, churches, and heritage homes. You can also enjoy the wares of the many artisans and farm stalls lining the route.

Parliament Hill

See the seat of Canada’s democracy in Quebec City. Take in the beauty of Quebec’s Parliament Building, one of Canada’s most beautiful architectural treasures, and see Fontaine de Toury, which was awarded a gold medal at the Paris World Fair in 1855, and in 2008 was the centerpiece of Quebec City’s 400th anniversary celebration.

Quebec City is Worth the Trip

I listed 5 amazing things in Quebec City. Alone, those 5 would make it worth the trip for anyone, but there are so many more things to see and do than I mentioned. From historical landmarks and districts to art galleries and the gorgeous countryside, Quebec City offers so much to see and do, you could go there several times and not see all of its beauty.
