Shake It Up – I Heart Dance Review
A couple of trips ago, with my kids in tow we stopped in Orlando and ended up with one of those fabulous TV station deals in the motel where we stayed. You know the kind? All Disney Family channel, pretty much all the time. My kids were in heaven. That’s when they discovered Shake it Up. I didn’t mind the show even in the slightest because the two main characters are quirky and just different enough to make me want to watch with my kids. One of the characters struggles with a learning disability. She has a mother who is a single parent and a police officer. That’s unconventional for TV, but reflective of reality. I like to see that.
Anyways, the two characters shown here on this CD actually audition for what is like a dance reality show of sorts. And low and behold they are chosen as regulars. So, Shake it Up has cute kids, some fun music and songs, and a compelling plot for tweens. When I realized they had a CD also for Shake it Up well I knew we had to have it. Thanks to Disney my girls have some more music to round out their collection of Kidz Bop and Justin Bieber.
Shake it Up, I Heart Dance is fun, light-hearted and enjoyable tween music. Both of the Disney Stars Bella Thorne and Zendaya perform the majority of songs on the CD. Each takes turns at individual tracks also. The theme song, is of course sung by Selena Gomez, who frankly I always tell my kids is cute as a button and a fun adorable TV personality, but NOT a singer. They disagree with me and still ask for all her CDs, but that’s okay. Both my girls enjoyed this CD as much as they enjoy the show Shake It Up! I still like the theme song and the techno pop beat is catchy, but truly nobody will ever convince me that Selena Gomez is meant to sing.
On this CD I am a fan of I Can Do Better, a fun upbeat tune performed by Y. La. If you listen to the entire CD, 12 tracks, which includes a bonus track, well it’s incredibly clear which one of the Disney stars has a powerful voice and potential to build an empire. Zendaya performs Beat of My Drum which is one of the stand out tracks here. Beat of My Drum has an exotic quick dance rhythm that resonates with me as an adult and, in my opinion, has legs. Zendaya plays Rocky Blue on Shake It Up and I am almost embarrassed to note how young she is, 16, but her voice reminds me slightly of a really young Rihanna or Shakira.
Conversely Blow the System by Bella Thorne is just filler on this CD. There is a really cute rendition of These Boots Are Made for Walkin’, performed by Olivia Holt, which sent me down memory lane and was interpreted in an entirely different manner by my kids. Boots was a gorgeous original, made over for the tween set here and that’s okay. It’s kind of fun.
Bonus track We’re Dancing is grown up, performed by Bridgit Mendler. It’s a nice finish to the selection of songs and it’s written also by Mendler with Josh Alexander and Billy Steinberg too. Shake It Up I Heart Dance is a fun, thoroughly enjoyable CD by Walt Disney Records. It gets two thumbs up from my kids and will obviously be worn out by them this summer as we hit road trip season.
