Your glasses can be a great investment, especially if they are stylish. Glasses have the power to make you feel confident, playful, bookish, smart, funky or sophisticated. They should never be a snap decision. Ideally you should try a lot of frames and learn what shape suits your face. You should be able to envision yourself wearing the glasses and feeling powerful, comfortable and in charge. You should be able to play a bit with looks and have fun – which is exactly what GlassesUSA.com is all about. We all know people whose glasses wear them and who clearly invest more…

Fasd camp 2009 outside London, Ontario Many London parents, professionals and educators will head to Toronto tomorrow for the first ever province-wide symposium tackling a challenging disability gaining national attention. The FASDOne symposium began with a limit of 300 parents and professionals, but demand for the training and information being offered has been so great that organizers have had to cap attendance at 425 and turn people away. A large number of participants are from the London area, many are part of a local group of experts and professionals here called the FASD ELMO (Elgin London Middlesex Oxford) network. Health Minister and…

This video gets me every time. Adoption Awareness Month has come and gone, but children still wait. This Youtube video posted by the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies (OACAS) says it all. There are still 9,200 children waiting for forever homes in the province of Ontario. If you have ever thought about adopting or fostering a child and giving them a home, what are you waiting for? Adults can wait to become parents, but children should never wait for a forever home. Call London-Middlesex Children’s Aid Society to enquire about domestic foster care adoption. 519-455-9000. Don’t take no for…

My commitment to health and wellness as a Mom is a constant challenge. We are an active family of four and our diet is usually quite healthy, but there is always room for improvement and with that in mind we are tackling the next year or so along with Quaker and Mom Central Canada and Lynn at http://www.quakerjourney.ca/. Our family will be looking for ways to make our diet more natural (see the video clip above) and we welcome feedback from others on what they do and how they make more natural food choices, or where they shop for organics.…

A cute Canadian company is making safety fun for kids of all ages. A couple of weeks ago this adorable beaver helmet cover arrived in the mail…from Tail-Wags Helmet Covers. (see bottom for exclusive discount for thriftymommastips readers – Thrifty is coupon code) How cute and Canadian is this? My daughter got to try out the child-sized Patriotic Beaver, which she loves. At six, it’s not uncommon for my child to argue about wearing her helmet, which is part of the reason I love having this product available. It’s a fun way to promote safety and she doesn’t argue about wearing this…

I spent part of my morning today playing Adventures in Sex City, The Sex Squad, a new on line game approved for use by Thames Valley District School Board. Say what?! There has been much written on line and many Mommybloggers are fetching blistering comments regarding this new sex ed tool. I can see why after spending even just a few moments playing the game. In this graphic novel style game a bad guy The Sperminator tries to shoot sperm at other characters who answer trivia questions. I chose the virginal Wonder Vag as my character and immediately could see…

It was one heck of a flu season with the H1N1 here at my house for much of November. The only one who escaped the misery was my husband, which I suppose is good for him, as there needs to be one healthy individual in every household. In our immediate circle of friends and family many were impacted this year severely. My brother and his family all got the bug. They live in Toronto and have a one-year-old. My brother’s flu bug evolved into bronchitis while the rest of his family quickly got better. My daughters and I also got…

It’s been a week since my last post, but I have been busily mulling over much in the world of adoption. Many of you probably read headlines about the blogger Mommy Anita Tedaldi who adopted a child and then when she felt the baby boy wasn’t bonding gave him up. It was all over the U.S. media and the Internet late last week. Tedaldi was interviewed by Matt Lauer on the Today Show. She was condemned and praised as people all over responded viscerally to her story. Last week I was called by a Montreal radio show to give comment…

On the ninth hour of the ninth day of the ninth month of 2009 (09,09,09 FASD DAY) we gathered in London’s Victoria Park for a pregnant pause to raise awareness regarding FASD Day. The Number 9 is Symbolic A pregnancy takes 9 months typically. So the number 9 has become a symbol to people in the FASD disability world. Hence the day – the ninth day of the ninth month and this year in 2009 this felt ever so meaningful. The Stats Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, is an invisible neurological disability, affecting an estimated 300,000 Canadians. The numbers are staggering,…
