There are so many reasons why government should support families and work towards building healthy families. I wanted to take this post to note five reasons why public funding for in vitro fertilization makes sense for the province of Alberta. Right now in Canada the only province that pays for in vitro fertilization is Quebec. The WHO, clearly states that infertility is a health issue, so in Canada where health care is entrenched in our national narrative as a defining characteristic that sets us above other countries, not funding IVF (Three rounds Single embryo transfer) when it is the recommended…

With thanks to Kerri-Lyn Cuppage for her family photo. It is a given this time of year when temperatures dip and families begin the process of nesting through the winter, when holidays are pending and the year winds slowly to a close, that we all take stock of our blessings, our gifts, challenges and triumphs. For families whose children came to them either through adoption or in vitro fertilization, whose start was rooted in the sad realization of infertility, then compounded by medical issues and potential financial difficulties the blessings are magnified. But the challenges are not to be forgotten.…

Amedeo Cristiano This holiday season the Cristianos have something to celebrate. After several years of trying to conceive, surgery, emotional distress and a devastating miscarriage just last December, Amedeo and his wife, Mayra, are about to become parents. Amedeo and Mayra were married six years ago. They both work at American Express corporate office and live in Vaughn. The couple knew they wanted to have children early on and they began trying almost as soon as they were married. At that time they were in their early 30s and both were healthy. In preparation for parenthood, Amedeo quit smoking. He…

Former first lady of Canada, Maureen McTeer recently stood in a private Women of Influence Award gathering and reminded the audience that in vitro fertilization (IVF), and assisted reproductive technologies are a modern day reality and should be funded in Ontario as a health care treatment. IVF is a medical treatment that is sometimes prescribed as the only way a couple can conceive a child. An estimated one in six Canadian couples struggle with infertility. Infertility is, often a byproduct of other health conditions. Sometimes it’s cancer that leaves a couple infertile, sometimes polycystic ovarian syndrome, or a disease like Crohn’s. And…

Ultrasound picture courtesy of Wiki images This is a piece that has been written by a friend of mine who lives in Ontario and went through in vitro fertilization (IVF) after infertility. I asked her to write it as a guest post for me here on thriftymommastips.com because she has always been extremely supportive of the Conceivable Dreams goal to grow awareness of the human and financial impact of infertility in Ontario. She supports the campaign to get OHIP funding for in vitro fertilization. Jane, and her husband, never told their parents about their battle with infertility and the arduous process…

Some of my readers and followers will have noticed I am on a new mission here lately _ one that involves championing the needs of families as usual, but from a slightly different perspective. Lately I am tweeting with the hashtag #Ohip4ivf because I have joined forces with a group called Conceivable Dreams. Conceivable Dreams is an advocacy based grassroots organization that started with the passion of two parents bent on educating public and government about the needs of parents in waiting, parents seeking to become families through the help of a process known as in vitro fertilization. I typically…

This is our story: One decade ago we became parents. Hard to imagine it has been that long.…
