Why Alkmaar Netherlands is the Perfect Dutch Base

Dreaming of a trip to the Netherlands? Visions of Amsterdam’s canals, windmills, iconic houses, and liberal culture might already be top of mind. Amsterdam is undeniably vibrant and an iconic tourist destination. But there are equally lovely quieter and more affordable alternatives for your home base, just a short train ride away from the hub. Alkmaar Netherlands offers all the Dutch charm with a side of relaxation and is easier on your wallet.

Swap Crowds for Charm in Alkmaar

Let me introduce you to the wonderful city of Alkmaar Netherlands. Forget what you think you know about needing to be in the heart of the capital. Staying in Alkmaar gives you an authentic, laid-back, quieter and genuinely enjoyable Dutch experience. Here’s why we loved it and why you should consider making this delightful city your headquarters for your Netherlands adventure.

Making it Affordable

My kids are students and we all travelled together to The Netherlands on Reading Week one year. So, when planning our Amsterdam and Netherlands adventure, saving money was high priority. Again, students don’t have wild amounts of disposable income and frankly neither do I.

We knew we wanted the space of an AirBNB and proximity to Amsterdam but more importantly without a car to drive, we needed affordability combined with accessibility.

Unmissable Experiences in Alkmaar Netherlands

Alkmaar is a perfect spot to hang your hat and rest after exploring the rest of the country. It is perfectly located and easy to access, a cute and colourful city packed with history, culture, and a whole lot of cheese. In fact, Alkmaar had everything we needed and we would happily return.

What to Do In Alkmaar Netherlands

Here are a few things you absolutely have to do:

Explore the Town

  1. Explore the Historic Old Town: Alkmaar’s city center is a postcard-perfect labyrinth of cobblestone streets, picturesque canals, and stunning gabled houses. It’s the kind of place where you can happily just wander, discovering quaint boutiques, cozy cafes, and beautiful, quiet courtyards. For a different perspective, hop on a canal boat tour and glide under old bridges, taking in the city’s beauty from the water.
  2. Soak Up Some Culture at the Museums: For a city of its size, Alkmaar has a fantastic museum scene. Inside the grand Waag building, you’ll find the Dutch Cheese Museum. But there’s more! Check out the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar for local art and history, or the National Beer Museum De Boom to learn about another famous Dutch export. And for a quirky surprise, there’s even a Beatles Museum— apparently, John Lennon’s first guitar was made here!
  3. Indulge in More Than Just Gouda: While you should definitely eat your weight in cheese, Alkmaar’s food scene is diverse and delicious. The restaurants and cafes here feel more local and less tourist-driven than in Amsterdam. You can find everything from traditional Dutch poffertjes (tiny, fluffy pancakes) to fresh seafood. In fact, the food experience here was so much more than we expected and it was extremely international. One of our favourite The atmosphere is just as much a part of the dining experience.
  4. Shopping for Days: To be honest, we found the shopping every bit as awesome in Alkmaar as it was in Amsterdam. From Hema department store variety to shoe stores and the easy grocery atmosphere of Spar, there’s everything you need.
  5. Hit the Beach and Dunes: One of the best perks of Alkmaar’s location is its proximity to the North Sea coast. A short bus or bike ride will get you to the beautiful beaches of Bergen aan Zee or Egmond aan Zee. It’s the perfect way to escape for an afternoon, breathe in the fresh sea air, and explore the gorgeous windswept dunes.
  6. Use it as a Perfect Day-Trip Hub: Certainly, Alkmaar is accessible. If you want to see the sights of Amsterdam, a direct train will have you there in about 35-40 minutes. Explore other classic Dutch sights like the windmills at Zaanse Schans or the charming coastal villages of North Holland. We took several trips in to see Amsterdam.
  7. Visit Haarlem: We did a windmills 1-hour canal tour in Haarlem one of our last days in The Netherlands and I highly recommend this. There’s a unicorn windmill in Haarlem that’s one of only five in the world.

The Real Talk: Alkmaar vs. Amsterdam for Your Stay

So, why choose to sleep in Alkmaar Netherlands when Amsterdam is right there? It boils down to a few key benefits that can completely change the vibe of your trip.

Is Alkmaar More Affordable?

Absolutely. This is probably the biggest and most immediate advantage. Your travel budget will stretch significantly further in Alkmaar and accommodation, whether you’re looking for a hotel or an Airbnb, is considerably cheaper. The same goes for dining out. That extra cash can be spent on experiences, museum tickets, or more souvenirs (and cheese!). Seriously though, it’s the best cheese I have had ever anywhere in the world.

Is it Quieter?

Yes, and it’s a wonderful kind of quiet. Indeed, while Alkmaar is a lively city, it lacks the 24/7 tourist frenzy of Amsterdam. The evenings are peaceful, the mornings are relaxed, and you won’t be navigating through massive crowds just to find coffee or stroopwaffles. Unwind and soak in the Dutch way of life at a much more pleasant pace. There are bars and restaurants and the weekend nights pick up in volume and energy if that’s your vibe.

The Benefits of an Alkmaar Base

  • Authentic Atmosphere: Alkmaar feels like a working Dutch city, not just a tourist hub. You’ll get a more genuine sense of local culture here.
  • Better Value: Basically you’ll likely get a larger, nicer room or apartment for your money compared to a similarly priced option in Amsterdam.
  • The Best of Both Worlds: Its fantastic train connection means you sacrifice nothing. As a matter of fact, you can spend a full day enjoying the high-energy museums and attractions of Amsterdam and then retreat to the calm and charm of Alkmaar in the evening. It’s the perfect balance.

So, next time you’re planning that trip to the Netherlands, consider making Alkmaar your home. I think you will discover a captivating city that offers an unforgettable, enjoyable, refreshingly authentic Dutch experience.
