Pool toys are some of my favourites. We tend to use a lot of them when kids come for a swim and they frequently need to be refreshed. So I was happy when we got hold of this Nerf Dolphina Bow Blaster to test drive here for a bit of fun. As weekends go this last two have been pretty close to perfect. Our pool is open and weather has been finally warm enough to make the water refreshing and inviting. We are rapidly getting accustomed to summer life in our new house and our new neighbourhood and frankly…

It’s almost time for Canadian Infertility Awareness Week. Why does that matter? Well, in Canada 1 in 6 people of reproductive age struggles with infertility. In the US the figure is 1 in 8. Canadian Infertility Awareness Week is a chance to remind people again why we advocate. It’s a chance to tell your stories too. The World Health Organization (WHO) calls infertility a public health crisis and it’s time to recognize that we need awareness and advocacy to help address this issue. All about Canadian Infertility Awareness Week This coming week May 24 to 31st is 2014 Canadian Infertility…

June brings little learners to the end of school. Whether this is the end of preschool, Kindergarten or a higher grade, it is a time of change—and the perfect time to celebrate their accomplishments thus far and to look forward to what they’ll do next. Here are five books to help mark this milestone in your younger learner’s life, to help them celebrate the past year, or the end of school, and look forward to next September and beyond. Reading is such a joy. It’s the thing that open all the doors of imagination and potential for future. So important too cultivate a love of reading early. As a parent reading time can be such a beautiful way to bond and grow. It’s time to nurture the love for books. Dads are every bit as involved in that process as Moms are, and because it is almost Father’s Day I thought it appropriate to share some great preschool books here with Dad in mind. Here are a few books about Dads to opt for at story time. 7…

This is a story about Facebook lies, the story of the day that Facebook ate my tween. Or the day I discovered she’d set up Facebook without listening to the rules. Facebook is 13 in this house, as per Facebook rules. I don’t take social media lightly and want my children to understand it is a serious privilege and responsibility. There are rules to all social media use and tweens are often too young to understand some of the hazards involved. This is the story of the day Facebook ate my child. Or Facebook lies your daughter tried to tell…

Recently I was introduced to The Honest Company Kitchen Products and happily tested them out in my home. Here’s what I found out…. Let’s start with the name. The Honest Company. That’s genius. I want to buy honest products from honest people. The word itself is heavily weighted in emotional appeal. So I heart that branding. The packaging is adorable and this company gave every Mom 2.0 summit attendee a great bundle of their products. But do The Honest Company cleaning products live up to their name? [tweetthis]Do The Honest Company cleaning products work? Here’s what I found. [/tweetthis] It’s…

Despite the Ontario budget chaos and the plunge straight into election mode I flew to Atlanta to attend my first ever Mom 2.0 conference. The craziness at home just meant I spent a good deal of the time away working also and taking calls. (I do a fair bit of political and health blogging and all of that ends up kicked into overdrive when an election is called.) This was my first Mom 2.0 Summit. I really didn’t know what to expect but hoped for some great networking time and planned to build on some of my networking and…

Five Reasons Why Public Funding for In Vitro Fertilization Matters to Maternal Health: 1. The emotional and physical stress of infertility is magnified by the financial stress of having to figure out how to pay for in vitro fertilization. Infertile people often have to find $10,000 or more to pay for IVF. In many provinces in Canada IVF is not covered by provincial health care plans. In fact Quebec is the only province in which full funding for IVF exists. The impact of health care stress, compounded by financial stress, is devastating for the entire family.
