The time of year couldn’t be more perfect for a Monster High party! Halloween, plus quirky dolls and cooler climate means more time spent playing indoors creatively. It was worth the wait and the kids had a blast viewing the latest Monster High Freaky Fusion movie release. Monster High has been a great conversation starter here in our new neighbourhood. We moved in February and happily found a lot of kids the same age as my daughters in our new area. Bonus, right? In fact the 8-year-old neighbour…

French Onion Soup Recipe #100FootJourney
I don’t know about you, but one of my favourite soup recipes is French onion. I frequently order French onion soup for lunch when I go out. Sometimes it is very good and sometimes it is disappointing when big chain restaurants attempt the recipe using small scraps of cheese and croutons. If I see French onion soup on the menu I have to try it at least once. It makes me think of home and childhood. French onion soup was my mother’s all time favourite soup. Funny how food can conjure up a feeling, emotion or memory. That’s precisely the theme behind the the movie The Hundred-Foot Journey. Food as…

The Hundred-Foot Journey Review – A Sumptuous Must See Summer Movie
The Hundred-Foot Journey is a real delight. This movie will steal your hearts and make you want to take your own parents to see the lovely story. Charlotte Le Bon, Helen Mirren and Manish Dayal in The Hundred-Foot Journey also starring Om Puri Last month I had the chance to preview the sweet, sensuous, film The Hundred-Foot Journey when I was in San Jose, California. It’s always a treat to see a film at the Blogher conference, but this one was unique and especially well told. The Hundred-Foot Journey is a story of culture and food, passion and love set against the backdrop of the magnificent countryside in the south…

This Disney’s Frozen post contains affiliate links. I received product for consideration here. If I had to pick a runaway hit of the year, Disney’s Frozen would be it. Today, it’s available on Blu-Ray and regular DVD. Amazon.ca and Amazon.com are both selling copies now. My Top Five Family Christmas Movies
This time of year we love to take the afternoon or evening and watch Family Christmas movies together. Are you the same way? There’s something super festive about watching Christmas movies together as a family. If your family is at all like mine, then Christmas is a great opportunity to snuggle, take a break, pop some popcorn, and plan a movie night. Who wants to go out after eating all that turkey? I’d much rather cuddle and watch something fun before Christmas too. Wrapping presents and decorating the tree is always a good time to share a special movie. In the spirit of Christmas and spending time together with family…

Sperm Donor Comedy Fertile Ground: Delivery Man
I was invited to see the Chicago Preview of Delivery Man, the movie featuring Vince Vaughn. while I was in Chicago for a blogging conference recently. These are my impressions of the movie. I mean is anyone ever really ready for parenthood? This movie Delivery Man takes that notion and turns it into comedy with an infertility theme too. Vince Vaughn delivers the funny in every movie he does. Delivery Man is no exception. For obvious reasons, given the themes of adoption and infertility that I often tackle here on my blog Thrifty Mommas Tips, I was really curious to see where Delivery Man would go in terms of plot.…

The Tooth Fairy movie and some days are like that…
This should be the review of the PG-rated movie The Tooth Fairy. But instead it is a post about flexibility. Not the kind that comes from doing pilates or yoga or any of that. The kind that comes from being a parent, especially well known to those parents of children with special needs. Anyways, what started out as noble intentions last week – a family movie with Grandma and me and my sweet kids, home for the March break, turned out to be what I can only guess was a full sensory assault to my little one, who as some of you know suffers from sensory processing disorder. There…

Orphan Movie – Time to Change the Script
Orphan movie hits theatres today from Warner Brothers. I’ve been asked to comment half a dozen times this week in print media and on TV regarding adoptive parents concerns. Basically, the movie shows a negative portrayal of older child adoption. The latest media is in today’s (Friday July 24th) Globe and Mail in the life section, so go buy the paper now or look up on line. A channel also interviewed me in my role as cofounder of the Canadian Coalition of Adoptive Families. The Orphan movie protest began a couple of months ago over negative language used in the previews. In the original promotions a little girl named Esther, who…
