When I was a child I could spend hours upon hours reading. I consumed novels in the summer as if they were food and they kind of were. In summer as a child I had all the time in the world just to read. In school, I loved a good reading challenge too. Summer Slump This summer, when the kids are home you can encourage their love of reading with this cute little 1,000 Minute Reading Challenge. Don’t let summer slide or summer slump claim too many of the kid’s brain cells this year or any year. What are You…

When I was a child I was all about early language arts and what they called reading and writing back then. So, I would have loved these early spring writing prompts. I devoured books and collected words and started stories often. Growing Kids Who Love Reading and Writing From the moment I was old enough to hold a crayon, I was always building stories. I didn’t necessarily need the writing prompts, or any prompts but if my teacher or my Mom had given me a pretty project sheet like this I would have been all over it. This spring I…

I had a super reluctant reader. It was kind of devastating to watch her struggle with learning to read because reading and writing are my favourite things and it’s also how I make a living. But, my one girl did not do well. Her processing speed is slower due to a few things such as FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder) and ADHD symptoms of hyperactivity and so she struggled decoding language and making it work. She has several diagnoses and school can be harder for her than it is for some other kids. So instead of literally and figuratively beating…

There are many ways to get kids involved in learning. An All About Me Book can be a great way to get them to work through some early identity issues. Things like who is in my family and how old am I are very important, especially when starting preschool or kindergarten. This Sports All About Me Book is intended to help. With my kids sometimes when they are struggling I ask them – “Hey who is on your team? ” “Mom is.” And then they list the people on their team. Sometimes it’s grudgingly, but often by the end of…

It’s no different for me and my family. This year, we’re improving ourselves with my favourite publisher, DK Canada. Three Self-Improvement Books for My Family Travel and learning always top my family’s list of ways to improve ourselves, and the books I recently received from DK…

Everyday Adventures is one of those books you come across that totally changes the way you look at something. I’ve always loved to travel. Getting out and exploring the world around me has been a passion of mine for life, and for as long as I can remember, I’ve chased the horizon. Recently, I realized there might be a different way to explore the world while I traveled and even…

The all new Kindle Oasis is here, and it’s the most advanced model ever released. That’s great news for book-lovers everywhere. So many things I love about the Kindle Oasis. Here are two: it’s made just for reading and it’s waterproof. The Paperwhite display means you can read with it in the dark, or in the brightest sunlight with no glare. And the fact that it is waterproof is brilliant! That’s important when you carry your reader everywhere like I do. Happy to report the all new Kindle Oasis features some new bells and whistles that have me more excited…

Embracing art is a great way to expand our children’s horizons. The arts are an important part of mental stimulation. Participating in the arts or just appreciating them activates different parts of the brain from other forms of education interaction, and it’s really quite beautiful. My oldest daughter is an artist, and she’s always buried in either her sketch pad or an art book. She’s been taking a lot of art courses, so I thought a few books from DK Canada would encourage her love of art and make embracing art a continued part of her daily life. Embracing Art…
