I am thrilled to share this first entry in my 2015 Thrifty Momma’s Tips Holiday Gift Guide. The Vex Robotics Hexcalator Construction Kit is the perfect toy for the science guy or gal on your list this year. But be warned this toy/ science and robotics kit is challenging, in a good way, so stick to the recommendations around age limits so your little one is not frustrated. This science, technology, engineering and math construction set will eventually become a series of ramps, pullies, planes, inclines and rotating wheels that lift and move the eight balls that come with the…

How many times a week do you eat chicken? I used to joke that I ate so much chicken I should cluck, but beyond the joke and the fact that I knew chicken was a good source of protein, I never really gave it that much consideration. In fact, I readily admit that I take my food for granted. I do the lion’s share of the grocery shopping in my house and chicken factors high on the meat side of the grocery list. It’s affordable and healthy. I trust that I can feed my family chicken several times a week. I…

I am a Mom who loves to travel and I have always loved to travel. For a time, in my 20s, before I had kids, I didn’t really know if I’d be able to manage travelling again. My health issues were sometimes so challenging that travel wouldn’t have been wise. In fact, it could have been dangerous. So, when my health started to improve I began travelling again, and this time with my entire family. Together we have gone swimming with dolphins, parasailed, seen The Mayan Ruins, cruised to Grand Cayman where we explored a sea turtle sanctuary. We’ve been…

Here I am three weeks after starting the Interac 21 Day Credit-Free Challenge and it is time to tell you whether I was successful or not with this adventure. It takes three weeks to change a habit. So that’s why I started this journey with my Interac Debit card and put my credit cards on ice. I shared my first two weeks here last month. Week One – Five Ways to Stay on Top of Debt can be read here. Week Two was Window Shopping. So how has it been overall? I work from home. I have a consulting business I love. But working…

Every year Halloween promises to turn me back into a child again. Just as it does for many kids of all ages. Oh, I don’t get all dressed up or crazy about the holiday, but there’s something universally appealing about outfitting your house with fun toys and decorations. Hallmark has some extremely adorable offerings as gifts or decorations for your own home. This year I wanted to share some of the best new Hallmark Halloween toys. This year I have to tell you how much fun I am having with these. When a box of Hallmark Halloween toys arrives well…

My week was a bit about the window-shopping. And let’s face it nobody likes window-shopping. But, more about that in a minute.. Last week I invited you to follow along with me on the Interac 21 Day Credit-Free Challenge journey to see what I have learned, and I figured it might help you save a few dollars too. This week I tried to pay close attention to my spending, so that I could accurately help some of you to succeed at saving money this month too. Itís hard to save money when you are also shopping for some really big-ticket…

What’s happening for infertility patients in Canada? I wish you could see what I hear. Every. Day. I hear some of the saddest stories you can imagine. Couples remortgaging their houses, leaving the country for infertility care. I hear too some success stories and those are brilliant. But far too much sadness. People who had brutally devastating illnesses like cancer, DIGITS – a rare gastrointestinal illness, Polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis. The list of illnesses is long. Many people I hear from inside infertility groups I help manage, have survived childhood cancer, or they live with a rare gastrointestinal disorder, or they…

Do you ever give your kids the evil eye? It can be very effective. Sometimes when my kids are misbehaving that’s all it takes. These evil eye cupcakes are pretty simple to make and a lot of fun to serve and share. The cupcakes here are the simple part. But don’t be fooled, the flavour is in the cupcake and the icing, well it’s really just the topper. Then again I am a massive sucker for icing. My kids would happily serve these at any party. Fun Halloween Cupcakes

You know how it’s challenging to sometimes get the kids outside to play? Well, I have a tween and a teen and these days Minecraft and Pinterest absorb most of their attention when not doing schoolwork. It’s tricky to encourage them to get outside sometimes. Even in the midst of some of the nicest weather ever this summer, well all they wanted to do was play on their iPads, or iPods or computers. So, when toys like Air Archer and Bungee Blast and this awesome Pump Rocket Jump Rocket LED Nightshotz showed up I knew exactly what we’d do with…
