    July 14, 2015 /

Disney is always a crowdpleaser. It is the one trip pretty much every family should take. But how do you know where to stay and how to save money? And should you stay at a Certified Disney Resort or should you choose a different option? If you’re planning to visit Disney World, staying at a certified Disney resort is a great way to fully enjoy the park without a lot of headaches. Staying at Disney resorts allows better access to the park, less headaches, and more fun. In the end, it takes away so much of the hassle that can go along with visiting the park. Take it from me, we have travelled…

Five Easy Gluten Free Lunch Ideas

    March 9, 2015 /

Gluten free eating is on the grow. Did you know that? In fact over the coming decade it is rumoured that 25 per cent of the population might be eating gluten free. Chances are good, that even if you don’t eat gluten free right now, that someone you know eats gluten free. I recently ran a gluten free roundup here and was shocked at the response to the post. That shows me that many of my readers are gluten free. In fact I was gluten free for several years in my twenties because my Crohn’s Disease was probably at its worst ever back then. I was very limited with what…

Part 2: Egg Freezing – Anna’s Cancer Diagnosis and Fertility Preservation

    December 3, 2014 /

Meet Anna and Marlon Kashani. In January of 2014 Anna, 29 years old, engaged to Marlon, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The Vancouver couple were devastated of course. But they were even more shocked to hear that treatment had to start immediately. Anna’s family history of breast cancer meant specialists wanted to begin aggressive treatment right away. The situation was urgent. There was no talk of fertility preservation, or what might happen, until Anna brought it up. “The cancer clinic told us we would never have kids,” Anna said recently in Vancouver. “We weren’t satisfied with that answer. We did some research. We got a second opinion. The second opinion was…

New Traditions and a Simple Shortbread Cookie Recipe #GayleaMom

    November 27, 2014 /

I have been baking for much of my life. As a child I loved to help bake with my Mom and my Grandma too. And, as a teenager I really enjoyed crafting and sewing, reading and cooking up something random. Betty Crocker’s cookbook and I were well acquainted. In fact, I still make a scrumptious jelly roll. Oddly though, I can’t recall ever having made shortbread cookies. Not once, until now. I recall having this perception that shortbread was hard to make, so we didn’t make it. This year is all about new traditions. We moved to a new house in February and I finally have my dream kitchen. This…

Elegant Christmas Tea Lovers Gift Ideas #TMMGG2014

    November 18, 2014 /

My Grandmother on my mother’s side was British. She was a total kick in the pants, a mom to five boys and one daughter and she was a huge tea drinker. Of course she also rolled cigarettes back when Virginia Slims make smoking appear sexy, then quit cold turkey one day after smoking for 30 years. She was a great, quirky and inspirational lady who loved to talk politics with me even when I was only nine or ten. As a child, when I went to her house (every single sick day) I would marvel at the teas (mostly Tetley  and Red Rose because those were her brands) and the…

    Arianna Huffington Interview #WordlessWednesday

    November 12, 2014 /

Last summer I attended Blogher 10 in San Jose. One of the highlights for me was Guy Kawasaki – social media guru and smarty pants – interviewing Arianna Huffington, who was a total breath of fresh air. She responded to his questions with razor sharp comebacks that were all sort of directed exactly where she wanted them to go. It was the most hysterical thing. She gave great responses and had everyone laughing. She was also clearly used to commanding attention in any room and she was promoting her new book Thrive. The crux of that seemed to be get more sleep and stop multi-tasking. This is my Wordless Wednesday.…

My Traditional Christmas Gift Guide 2014 #TMMGG2014

    November 7, 2014 /

Several weeks ago I announced my Gifts with Heart gift guide here on Thrifty Momma’s Tips. That Christmas gift guide 2014 is meant exclusively this year for gifts that give back to the world, or the community. Right now that means that it is dominated by World Vision Canada gifts. A gift from the catalogue there gives back to children and families living in poverty around the world. I have launched that guide and asked all my personal friends and family members to buy things such as artisan gifts from the World Vision gift catalogue. Many of my friends have informed me they are already doing that. Margarita Ibbott has picked…
