New Traditions and a Simple Shortbread Cookie Recipe #GayleaMom
I have been baking for much of my life. As a child I loved to help bake with my Mom and my Grandma too. And, as a teenager I really enjoyed crafting and sewing, reading and cooking up something random. Betty Crocker’s cookbook and I were well acquainted. In fact, I still make a scrumptious jelly roll. Oddly though, I can’t recall ever having made shortbread cookies. Not once, until now. I recall having this perception that shortbread was hard to make, so we didn’t make it. This year is all about new traditions. We moved to a new house in February and I finally have my dream kitchen. This…

I am thrilled to be a Disney On Ice Insider again this year. I love Disney on Ice and I have written about that experience often. This Disney post is from way back in 2011. In the mean time here is a free Disney Mickey Mouse Ears printable for your children to make and play with. Enjoy! And keep reading so you don’t miss the chance to win tickets. MickeyEars

Elegant Christmas Tea Lovers Gift Ideas #TMMGG2014
My Grandmother on my mother’s side was British. She was a total kick in the pants, a mom to five boys and one daughter and she was a huge tea drinker. Of course she also rolled cigarettes back when Virginia Slims make smoking appear sexy, then quit cold turkey one day after smoking for 30 years. She was a great, quirky and inspirational lady who loved to talk politics with me even when I was only nine or ten. As a child, when I went to her house (every single sick day) I would marvel at the teas (mostly Tetley and Red Rose because those were her brands) and the…

Arianna Huffington Interview #WordlessWednesday
Last summer I attended Blogher 10 in San Jose. One of the highlights for me was Guy Kawasaki – social media guru and smarty pants – interviewing Arianna Huffington, who was a total breath of fresh air. She responded to his questions with razor sharp comebacks that were all sort of directed exactly where she wanted them to go. It was the most hysterical thing. She gave great responses and had everyone laughing. She was also clearly used to commanding attention in any room and she was promoting her new book Thrive. The crux of that seemed to be get more sleep and stop multi-tasking. This is my Wordless Wednesday.…

My Traditional Christmas Gift Guide 2014 #TMMGG2014
Several weeks ago I announced my Gifts with Heart gift guide here on Thrifty Momma’s Tips. That Christmas gift guide 2014 is meant exclusively this year for gifts that give back to the world, or the community. Right now that means that it is dominated by World Vision Canada gifts. A gift from the catalogue there gives back to children and families living in poverty around the world. I have launched that guide and asked all my personal friends and family members to buy things such as artisan gifts from the World Vision gift catalogue. Many of my friends have informed me they are already doing that. Margarita Ibbott has picked…

Mabel’s Labels Stocking Stuffer Combos for Christmas
This post contains affiliate links. If you order anything from the links I will get a small percentage of the profit. My family are massive fans of Mabel. We take her everywhere. We always have done so. From the minute the kids hit preschool and needed some help “remembering” their belongings, we had Mabel’s Labels on all the relevant items. Mabel has great 411 wristbands for kids with special needs or allergies and over the years we have used those also. They help the kids feel safe sometimes when they are in public or away from Mom and Dad. We have summer combos and back to school combos. So why…

Weight Watchers Salted Caramel Brownie Bliss
I am all out of these scrumptious Weight Watchers Salted Caramel Brownie Bliss treats. Which is a total drag, because this will eventually impact my bottom line. (Pun fully intended) See I blog, as you might be aware, and that means endless periods of writing and staring at computer while sitting on my derriere. I love what I do. It combines writing, marketing and being creative with generating real results for clients and consulting with other clients through my social media consulting business Thrifty Mom Media. I really enjoy what I do, but working at home is hard on your body in some ways. For instance, I eat worse when…

Monster High Freaky Fusion Movie Release
The time of year couldn’t be more perfect for a Monster High party! Halloween, plus quirky dolls and cooler climate means more time spent playing indoors creatively. This weekend we finally had time to invite some neighbors and friends over for the night to party Monster High style. It was worth the wait and the kids had a blast viewing the latest Monster High Freaky Fusion movie release. Monster High has been a great conversation starter here in our new neighbourhood. We moved in February and happily found a lot of kids the same age as my daughters in our new area. Bonus, right? In fact the 8-year-old neighbour…

Kidz Bop 24 and Christmas CD Review
My girls are musically at a challenging age. Oh, they love music. All kinds of music. My youngest got an iPod Nano for Christmas and so we have been adding tunes and constructing a Playlist for her. At nine-years-old, she loves a range of eclectic music _ from Michael Buble to Katie Perry. But some of the music she adores, or thinks she adores has lyrics I don’t want her repeating or hearing. So how do you juggle that? Well KidzBop answers that question quite tidily, thank you. KidzBop Christmas arrived here on New Year’s Eve and my kids couldn’t wait to hear it. As we have been in moving…
