August was a little crazy – and frankly the tiniest bit lazy here too. Oh work was plentiful and my kids were very busy. But working out slid by the wayside, unless you call chasing my brother’s cute kids around the beach in Southampton a work out. Anyways, this morning back to school for this mom meant back to my regularly scheduled workout. Because 40, my friends, is not kind to your butt, nor is blogging for that matter, and forget metabolism. Once you hit 40 your metabolism begins a slow geriatric crawl up hill. Every pound you gain seems…

Kellogg’s Vector chewy protein bars are the tastiest snack bars I’ve ever eaten. If you love peanuts and have no allergies these new bars from Kellogg’s are absolutely delicious. With 11 grams of protein in each bar and 5 grams of fibre I happily shared these with my kids. Now, obviously these cannot be taken to schools with children who have nut allergies. But at home here or on a family outing these are a great little snack option. I wouldn’t want the kids eating too many of them because they have 170 calories per bar. But to me this…

(This post about crowdfunding a baby was originally published in 2013. It has been UPDATED with 2016 information) You’ve heard of crowdfunding a new product. And crowdfunding to launch a concept like a new app, or the perfect Canadian winter coat. How about crowdfunding a baby? When expensive fertility treatments are necessary and they aren’t covered sometimes you have to get extremely resourceful. Remember Nick? You might have read of his creative approach to fertility funding earlier this year when he spoke to the Vancouver Sun about crowd funding health care treatment. Nick Beaulieu and his wife were running…

Five outfits. Two girls. Just over $100. I Love the math this year!! Yesterday was Back To School Day. We started the day with martial arts day camp, because it is a very busy work week for me, but I pulled my youngest out for a quick school visit to familiarize her with the building and the classroom again. It’s one of those necessary events that happen most years in late August. The visit went really well and it was funny seeing the school so empty and messy still. (Lots of work to do there before Sept. 3rd) Ainsley met…

If you are a new parent, there is nothing more important than your precious little one. You would do pretty much anything to protect your child and make sure they grow strong and healthy. Parenting and caregiving is also exhausting work. There is little more tiring than the first year adjusting to a new baby, infant, toddler. You wake bone weary, but excited to see your little one. Life is also busy. There’s work and groceries and life in general. Sometimes you entrust your child to a loved one, a grandparent, a substitute caregiver. You trust them with your heart.…

Sometimes I wonder how does hate help anyone? It is a horrible vile and debilitating feeling to carry around as a human being. And it doesn’t help anyone in a minority community, not that hateful people consider that. How is hate allowed to fester? Of that, I have no clue, but it is in fact more prevalent in neighbourhoods and institutions than you’d ever believe. This week we saw that with this horrendous letter that circulated on the news and on line. My daughter last year. Sometimes this is what special needs looks like. By now you have all heard…

Remember this? Two weeks ago, when I was heading off to Chicago, I was still agonizing over whether Ainsley, my busy, sporty girl with special needs, could handle sleep away camp. I wrote a whole post about children with special needs at camp. Parents of special needs children are used to worrying. We worry about finances, and school, and life when we are gone. We worry our kids may never be able to cope fully, and enjoy, and be supported in the world without us. We worry with good reason, because frankly I have seen systems and systemic failures for children…

When you are struggling with infertility, or trying to conceive, time is quite simply not your friend. It is the days between doctor’s appointments, and the calendar you watch every month wondering and hoping with crossed fingers. It is every season ticking by faster, carrying holidays by in a blur of tears. Years can unfold while trying. Treatments also take time. But what if the waiting then becomes complicated by fund raising as you juggle how to pay for in vitro fertilization? Weeks, become months and years pass quickly, then all of a sudden the fertility window, even with such…

Listen up. I am about to share all of my lunch time-saving tips with you. So make note and commit a few of these to memory. Trust me. You will need them. Over the course of this coming school year, it is likely you will need about 200 packed lunches, that is if your adorable children are lifers (I mean full time and full day students like mine). That’s just for one child. So lunch time-saving tips are not negotiable. You can obviously make that a wee bit less onerous by opting in for the pizza days and the hot…
