Target Canada Closing – What Went Wrong? – Interview with Retail Expert
Target Canada made headlines across the country this week announcing they will close all 133 Canadian stores opened under two years ago. Target trended on Twitter all week, but this time it wasn’t for a twitter party or a social media marketing event. It was bad news for many. I interviewed retail expert John Winter of John Winter and Associates today on what went wrong. I used to talk with John Winter often when I wrote daily news columns for business sections of the news. I still remember interviewing him when Walmart set up shop in Canada in the 90s. That was a massive retail shift for Canadian retail. Target appeared to…

Best Business Stationery – My New Year’s Cards
I was a tiny bit late with Christmas cards this year. But I didn’t want to give up on my idea of sending cards out still. Last year I chose Minted.com to make a fun family photo into a business-y post card to send to contacts and former clients. I kind of loved the idea still and wanted to make a business holiday card. In 2014, I think that business postcard was really well received and I enjoyed sending it. There is obvious merit in thanking former clients for their business. It’s nice, classy and it also serves to remind people I am still available to help with social strategy. This…

Best Brands Offer Customer Friendly Return Policies
The shopping experience can turn a loyal shopper off if the return policy is hard to negotiate Almost every customer has returned a purchased product for a store credit, exchange or refund at least once in their lifetime. The experience is often remarkably routine. However, sometimes returns do not transpire the way they should. Let’s face it we all have a return story that made us feel undervalued as a customer. An experience shopping at even a beloved regular store can make you reconsider where you spend your money if the chain ends up having not so customer friendly return policies. Customers will be more likely to shop in retail…

Home Office Decorating #InkscrblrATWork
Months ago we moved to a new home. If you read this blog at all, then you know that we moved to a lovely new neighbourhood and we have a pool and super neighbours. We had some of that in our old neighbourhood, but our house was a bit too small for my family, and it was most definitely way too tiny to contain a work space for me. My social media consulting and blogging business grew fast and had taken over my old house. I needed a dedicated office space. I also needed to do some Home Office Decorating. The before picture of my home office space I hoped my…

Lost Luggage and My Trip to #Blogher14 #travel
Is there anything worse than lost luggage? Yes, actually. Lost luggage when attending a conference. That can be truly frightening. This happened to me recently and this is the story of how I fixed it. This is the story of lost luggage. Just last week actually on my way to a conference called Blogher, I arrived without my luggage. That was a first for me as a traveler. I have heard many stories over the years of people losing their luggage but this was apparently my turn. I was on my way to a business conference for bloggers called Blogher 14 in San Jose, California. It was only a four…

Five Things That Make Blogher Unique
They tell me I am a veteran because this will be my third tour of Blogher. I don’t really feel like a veteran, because the word makes me feel kind of old and I am definitely not that. (Cough) Anyways, as I head off to my third Blogher conference I wanted to share a few things I have learned about this epic conference experience. Each conference is precious and they all have their own merits and strengths. Type A was my first ever. Blissdom Canada is always inspiring and special. Mom 2.0 was a great experience for me this May and I will return to that one next year again…

Turn Your Love of Healthy Foods into a Business You Will Love
Eating healthy for many mothers is a way of life. You may go out of your way to find all of the healthiest foods for you and your family to enjoy even if that means you will end up spending a little more on the groceries. Of course, a little planning can help frugal moms to find healthy foods the whole family will love for about $135 a week, according to the Mayo Clinic. The really good news is all the hard work you put into creating menus and buying groceries for your family can also turn into a full time job. This is possible if you start making and…

My Four Favourite Linked In Groups
Linked In is often the punchline in people’s social media jokes. But honestly if you are ignoring this platform entirely then you are missing the point. Linked In can be a powerful search engine and a very useful professional channel for connecting and sharing leads and information. Linked In Groups are one of my favourite things about Linked In. I’m forever amazed at the business people and bloggers who are not yet capitalizing on connecting via Linked In or Linked In Groups. I have heard Linked In dubbed boring and dull, even pointless. Frankly I am not here to convince you if you don’t understand the power of networking on Linked…

Four Reasons I am Attending Mompreneur Conference
This weekend I am heading to the Mompreneur conference in Toronto. As you all know this is not my first conference. I attend about 6 social media workshops and conferences throughout the year. But this one is different. First of all, it’s a business focus. In particular, a women in business focus. Why is that important? Simply put, I am a business. And I am a woman. I run a social media strategy and marketing business in addition to the health blogging and marketing that I do here at Thrifty Momma’s Tips. Business has grown and I know full well the power and importance in networking. I also know that’s…
