Five Easy Ways to Encourage a Reluctant Reader to Read

    February 26, 2020 /

I had a super reluctant reader. It was kind of devastating to watch her struggle with learning to read because reading and writing are my favourite things and it’s also how I make a living. But, my one girl did not do well. Her processing speed is slower due to a few things such as FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder) and ADHD symptoms of hyperactivity and so she struggled decoding language and making it work. She has several diagnoses and school can be harder for her than it is for some other kids. So instead of literally and figuratively beating our heads against the wall trying to teach her, we…

How to Do an Easy Scavenger Hunt for Kids

    February 13, 2020 /

This Scavenger Hunt post contains affiliate links as a service to my readers. I make a small commission via qualifying links. When my kids were both small we often did fun things like go outside to do a random scavenger hunt. I would write out a list of things, sometimes numbers or letters that I wanted them to find and we would go for a walk through our neighbourhood. Tricks and Simple Activities to Keep Kids Busy That’s just one of the things that we used to do when they were young. We also built igloos in the backyard, raced down our slide and climber in our snowsuits or snow…

Make Coding Fun with Botzees Now

    December 13, 2019 /

Make coding fun with a toy that combines building and lots of entertaining puzzles alongside simple to understand coding. Botzees is a toy that combines all these elements into one experience that helps to make coding fun for kids. I received product for consideration here. I love that because as any long-time reader knows, I’m a huge supporter of STEM and figuring out ways to introduce it to our kids at an early age. That’s why I’m so excited about Botzees and how they approach coding. Technology is moving so fast these days. A few years ago, apps were an amazing new development. It seemed like we were in the…

My Christmas Wish List Activity for Kids

    December 6, 2019 /

My Christmas Wish List. If there was a single phrase that could evoke childhood and the spirit of Christmas long ago for me, then I think it would be My Christmas Wish List. Post may contain affiliate links as a service to readers. I receive a small commission via qualifying links. Do you remember being small, poring over catalogues or flyers that arrived in the mail, circling items you dreamed of owning? For me, as a child, it was always dolls and Barbies. Meanwhile my brother lived for the latest race cars and trucks and puzzles. I have a daughter like that who asks for a puzzle every single year…

We Don’t Get That – Friendships and FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder)

    December 4, 2019 /

“You know how everyone else has a best friend when they are small and they kind of grow up with them? Well, it’s like we don’t get that.” – my daughter, 15, who has FASD. Recently we found a peer support group for my younger daughter. This has been a long time coming. In fact, I’ve basically been looking since she was old enough to have been diagnosed with FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder) at 4 or 5. For years, we had nothing. No support. No local FASD parenting group. I mean, I had a loose group of online advocates and we connected on Facebook and Facebook Messenger occasionally when…

A Travel Printable for Kids – How I Spent 2019

    November 21, 2019 /

Oh my goodness we have rarely travelled as much as we did together in 2019. Now that ski season is almost here again my youngest daughter keeps asking: “Hey Mom, can we do a trip like we did last season?” Kids Can Reflect on a Fun Year Too! Last season, for your information we took an epic trip of 12 Days, nine to ten of those were straight days of skiing!” Yes, ski season was fantastic this year! I wish we could do an epic trip like that every single year, but it seems unlikely. Sometimes, these trips come together last minute, especially when you are a travel writer. Last…

    October 17, 2019 /

Did you know that the Frozen sequel is due out any time now! My kids have long since aged out of this phase, but to be honest at least two of us will be watching the new movie together. Age is relative, right? I happen to love Anna and Elsa and Olaf too of course, so I can’t wait. This season, as we get closer and closer to the holidays I wanted to share a few of my favourite Frozen gift ideas.  Hunting for the most perfect Frozen gift ideas ever? Look no further. I gathered a few of the most charming ideas around here for you. There’s still time…

Fun, New, Educational Reads for Kids

    September 3, 2019 /

This post has been sponsored by DK Canada. I received product for consideration here. Educational reads are vital to start and keep a love of learning in kids. Back to school is on everyone’s minds, so the time is right to nurture curiosity and spark interests in many topics outside school too. Remember, the kids will have plenty of textbooks at school. They will want some enjoyable alternatives at home. That’s why I look for educational reads that are fun when I buy books. Also, honestly it’s never too soon to start planning for holiday gifts either. I recently got three books from DK Canada that make education fun. These…
