This Scavenger Hunt post contains affiliate links as a service to my readers. I make a small commission via qualifying links. When my kids were both small we often did fun things like go outside to do a random scavenger hunt. I would write out a list of things, sometimes numbers or letters that I wanted them to find and we would go for a walk through our neighbourhood. Tricks and Simple Activities to Keep Kids Busy That’s just one of the things that we used to do when they were young. We also built igloos in the backyard, raced…

The world just seems a little bit bigger in Wyoming somehow. Maybe because the topaz skies are some of the bluest you’ll ever see, the wide open spaces stretch out for miles and the combined effect makes the plains seem endless. So What’s There to See in a Place like This? I’ve been fortunate to be able to visit Wyoming twice in the last two years on media trips and have seen so much more of the equality state than I ever expected to. I was a guest of Visit Wyoming and also Austin Adventures two separate times. Wyoming’s vast…

We were guests of Mobile, New Orleans, Coastal Mississippi and Gulf Shores while on this amazing 12 day girl’s trip. Meals, flights, accommodations and more were paid for by the tourism partners listed here. This is my honest opinion on the Southern Foods below. Whether it’s the Acadian influence, the flourishing port cities bringing easy access to imported spices, or the jubilant approach to cooking that makes the difference, there’s something unique and thoroughly magnificent about Southern Foods. Whatever the reason for the impressive range of dishes all throughout the Gulf Coast, the flavours of the south will knock your…

These adorable fishing jokes for kids are a cute way to show your kids you are thinking about them when they are at school, or camp. There’s nothing quite as useful as comic content for kids when it comes to socializing. What’s the first thing that your niece and nephew tell you at every single family function? “Hello Auntie Paula or Uncle Jim” and then they launch right into the jokes, right? I love this about my youngest niece and second youngest nephew. It totally reminds me of my own childhood because my brother used to love jokes. I was…

“Mobile Alabama is like the quirky teacher you had in high school, you know that one who wore mismatched Crocs?” ~ a Mobile resident. Born to Celebrate Born to celebrate is exactly the right tag line for Mobile Alabama. Rarely have I been to a city so exuberant, colourful or tasty. A couple of months ago, I landed in Mobile Alabama on a girl’s trip with three travel writers who are also friends. We arrived via Coastal Mississippi and our Mobile Alabama Girl’s Trip started with seafood at a famed restaurant. I mean, honestly, for me, that just hits a…

I read a story this morning about a skier’s wife who committed suicide in 2016. That story reminded me again how fragile mental health is. I know too well how hard it is to secure mental health supports and help for young people who need treatment. In fact, I just wrote a CBC Parents piece about that precise issue and the unbearable weight of being waitlisted. But there has to be something that sometimes gives us the strength and the ability to get through the wait. Right? It’s completely undoable otherwise. What Can You Do to Get Through the Hard…

This sensory toys post contains affiliate links as a service to readers. Purchases made via qualifying links mean a small commission for me. What do you give to kids who are anxious about a lot of things, whose brains seem to amplify sensations and noises? Good sensory toys can help them function and manage sensory input. My daughter has sensory processing disorder. I have written about that here a few times. Years ago I wrote about our journey to get a sensory processing disorder diagnosis for Today’s Parent magazine. These recommendations are based on what we have found that works.…
