On Goal Setting and Making Magic Happen
As a writer and a business person I have always been invested in goal setting as a means of keeping myself accountable and moving forward. For me, this works. The year that I levelled up my freelance writing and carved out more time for pitches and bylines, I made good on those goals. Here’s how. Over the course of a career I have at times been employed on staff at magazines and newspapers. As a staff writer sometimes, the goals were obvious: get the gig as a columnist. (Which I did for a bit as a business writing columnist.) Or get the job as a beat reporter on the court…

My 2021 Word of the Year, Finally
“I took a deep breath and listened to the old bray of my heart: I am, I am, I am.” ~ Sylvia Plath Sylvia knew. Post may contain affiliate links as a service to readers. I receive a small commission from purchases made via qualifying links. Words This year, it has taken me exactly a month to find my 2021 word of the year. Why? Well, I wasn’t convinced I’d bother to choose a word of the year. Wasn’t it a ridiculous assumption to make that a year would bend to meet the shape of a word. I mean after 2020, haven’t we all seen that life is nothing if…

New Year’s Goals – How to Stick to Them
New Year’s Goals are something that we all throw out there when the clock strikes midnight and the new year rolls in. The problem with these goals is that we never seem to stick to them. We want to get more sleep, but two days later, we’re binge watching a show until 1 AM. We want to eat healthier, but it takes about 4 days before we’re chowing down on the leftover holiday cookies. So how can we stick to our New Year’s Goals? How to Stick to Your New Year’s Goals While all of these goals that we have are well-intentioned, we rarely succeed. Why is that? Well, for…

What Next? My New Travel Goals #travel
It hit me on the flight back from Martin County, Florida this summer. As accomplished as I feel when I travel, and meet a new challenge and tick something off my list, I sometimes feel a bit directionless afterwards. Do you know the feeling I mean? Kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, turtle nesting tours…On this one particular trip I did so many awesome activities that I had to stop and ask myself what next? What haven’t I done on a trip? Where haven’t I been? What are my new travel goals? Sitting there on the plane, exhausted from surfing lessons earlier that day, I quickly thought of zip lining. That’s the next thing,…

2015 Fitness Goals Printable
Happy New Year! When the clock strikes 12:01 on January 1st you inevitably hear all the great promises to lose weight and get fit. It’s pretty much the standard New Year’s resolution. Get fit, and lose weight. But sometimes it’s not sustainable. Sometimes despite the best intentions life happens and fitness falls by the wayside. I know this to be true. My own fitness goals were great in 2014 but then September hit and they unravelled entirely. I am hopeful this year will be better for me that way. I have a few tools keeping me on track. The tools that keep me accountable are worth their weight in…

Falling off the Fitness Bandwagon – An Update
shutterstock images Right now I am beating myself up. Why? Because I’ve had a lazy summer in terms of fitness routines. I am, in fact, pretty mad at the blogger butt I have developed over the summer. Or should I say pissed at self for allowing blogger butt to creep in, or out, if I want to be accurate about it. So what happened? Work has been plentiful. The summer has been filled with great travel opportunities and I have a few brand new clients that have the adrenaline flowing here already. I started the summer strong. Remember this? I Ran 1.5 K. I had goals. But that didn’t last. We had…

One Word New Year’s
Productivity is a goal here every day. Writing can be a solitary activity. It is indeed a craft and vocation that only works if you are super self disciplined. I am actually mostly that person. I can focus hard when necessary and get jobs done. But, it is with renewed intent that I am choosing this as a word to guide the next year. Productivity. Here’s why. People have been asking me repeatedly this week about New Year’s resolutions and really, they aren’t a thing I do. Instead, I choose goals and try to meet them and strive to improve throughout the year. But resolutions, at least to me, are…
